i know its kinda but I've designed an outline for a book that we MUST make!!! we first assemble a master grand list of all things good for the glider belly (great title, right? ) and organize it as so:
It could start with a brief introduction to/about gliders (for the first time owner with little to no knowledge on suggies)
CH 1, discuss the specific needs of a glider's metabolism (should there be any rouge glider owners trying to compile a list for their own diet),
CH 2 misfortunes related to poor glider health and nutrition (disorders, diseases, particular behaviors/signs & symptoms),
CHapters 3 thru ___ "APPROVED, BALANCED diets" - each diet should have ITS OWN CHAPTER detailing origin and misc. info of diet, content of diet, explanation of content's significance [ratios, nutrients], its recipe for making it, AND THE PELLETS THAT COMPLIMENT/COUNTERACT THE diet.)
CH ___ - Nursing Glider diets (maybe a new, original/specialty [and tested] diet tailored for nursing gliders)
CH ___ - Joey diets (consist of all things to do with Joeys and premature Joeys.. feeding, stimulating, care and precautions, housing/sheltering.. this is a special CH to include info out of diet)
CH ___ - Fruits (list the good and the bad ones, and nutritional value.. this chapter could have a brief segment talking about fruits and then make two lists of the good fruits values and the bad fruits values)
CH ___ - Veggies (do the same as done with the fruits chapter)
CH ___ - Bugs (same format as fruit and veggie chapters)
CH ___ - Treats and Lickies (Ideas for treats and moderation)
CH ___ - HELP SECTION (maybe we could include another list of sites and stuff that are trust worthy and reputable ::cough cough:: or include sponsored links to help with publishing costs)
please leave your thoughts and opinions!!

Astronoc - I haven't been able to find the Glide-R-Chow ingredients yet, but I have a few feelers out to see if I can get my hands on it again. What about Glider Grub too? Isn't that another one from a mill breeder? Misty

Oh yeah....& as far as a book goes. I know this is a little off-topic, but it does go along with collecting all of this pellet diet info. I would LOVE to make a book but first & foremost, I'd like to get as much info up on my website as I can. I created my website to help educate people & compile info for people to make it easy to find. I want to get as much info as I can there & offer it to people for free. My vision would be to make a book afterwards that would be more like an offline reference manual....basically containing most of the more important knowledge from the website. breeders could give or sell it to people when they adopt their joeys. It'd be available for people who maybe aren't online or don't want to navigate through a website. I welcome help from anyone who wants to aid me in collecting the info to post on my website. So far, I mostly have diet info but do plan to expand and have over 100 ideas for pages to create on there....and not enough time in the day. Getting this info compiled on the pellet foods is a great first step. Misty

Ok here's the "Glider Grub" (am waiting for Brisky's to email me as I threw out the label) ALSO....we might want to add a list of catfoods that people use...with ca:p ratios included. I have been in contact with a few companies and some are great about revealing ratios and some are not (so I will not use those)I will only use ones that have a positive ratio. keeping in mind that catfood should NOT be used as a staple diet! just a treat. Glider Grub: dehulled soybean meal, corn flour, wheat middlings, fructose, casein, dried whole eggs, wheat germ, ground wheat, animal fat, preserved BHA, fried whey, corn gluten meal, soybean oil, dried beet pulp, calcium carbonate, brewers yeast, wheat bran, dehydrated alfalfa meal, sodium hexametaphosphate, fish meal, salt, l-ascorbyl-2-polyphosphate, orange flavoring, folic acid, taurine, pyridoxine hydrochloride, cholecalciferol, menadoine dimethylpyrimidinol bisulfite, d-alpha tocopheryl acetate, choline chloride, iron polysaccharide complex, calcium pantothenate, dl-methionine, vit A acetate, biotin, thiamine monoitrate, cyanocobalamin, riboflavin, nicotinic acid, cobalt polysaccharide complex, copper polysaccharide complex, manganese polysaccharide complex, zinc polysaccharide complex, ethylenediamine dihydrodide sodium selenite. guaranteed analysis protein min 22% fat min 9% fiber max 4% according to one person who distributes this, he claims it is the Mazuri New World Primate food repackaged. He was unable to provide a calcium:phosphorus ratio . SO I contacted Mazuri and tried to get a calcium:phosphorus ratio from them, but they never answered my numerous emails. feeding instruction: keep in cage as free choice at all times, replacing as needed if soiled. Brisky"'s list is coming....

Ok, first can someone clarify, at the beginning of these ingredients it says 'soybean'. If Soy is toxic to gliders, is soybean different?? If it is, how differnt is it that it's safe to feed the suggie with this ingredient in it?? On the diet Chapters, there are some specific fruits and veggis to feed with them and should be listed in those chapters for those who don't know or are nebie glider ownders. Just a though.

I know that some glider owners stay away from pellets or food with soybean meal. I dont have any experience with that particular ingredient to say either way. The cool part about gathering these diets is that we will be able to ask those questions across multiple diets since this is not the only one that carries said ingrendient. This can be one of those points where we'll have to note people's opinion

Soy isn't toxic to gliders. Soy is a component of Wombaroo HPS (that is used in the HPW diet) and people, including myself have fed tofu. It just isn't something that should be given in large quantities - as with everything, moderation is the key.

Thankyou Gretchen. I misunderstood it then under the explanation of the 'Dangers of Onion, Garlic, Lima Bean & Soy' thread. I don't feed anything extra that has soy in it so no worries here then.

mmmmm.... What on earth is "specialized" protein, fat and fiber? I think (PPP) Perfect Pocket Pets sure wants to make their junk food sound "special" for gliders. Janine - will your spread sheet include any nutritional analysis - such as mg amts for calcium, phosphorus, protein etc in a uniform amount of each pellet food? Generally if these nutrients can be given in mg per 100 grams of the food then it helps to compare the foods. Just a list of ingredients without mg amounts per volume for each ingredient will not give much to compare.

We just need the Glide-R-Chow and Exotic Nutrition Baby Premium Sugar Glider diet feeding instructions I got the ingredients and guaranteed analysis for both of these but thats the only piece missing. I want what is exactly on the label so as not to be biased and maintain somewhat of a data standard.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how we can go about getting actual nutritional breakdown(milligrams of protein, calcium, etc per oz or per cup)? I think we have to call the manufacturers for this part. Any volunteers? I cant carry this torch through the phone call portion of it but I am willing to stick around and help in other things or after that part is done

I can contact Exotic Nutrition to get the breakdown on their products, if they're willing. I agree with Candy. We need to ask for mg of each nutrient per 100g of the diet. That way we're all consistent. It may take some time to get all of this info. I'll be able to make up some neat comparisons in Excel though, once we have it. Misty

The only feeding instructions for Glide-R-Chow were to keep a dish 1/2 filled with the pellets. Once they looked gummy/chewed up, they should be replaced with fresh pellets.
Janine[/quote]
I will add "Keep dish 1/2 filled with the pellets. Once they looked gummy/chewed up, they should be replaced with fresh pellets" as the instructions for now. If anyone notices thats not the exact wording, please let me know so i can update.

I've used Glide-R-chow, pretty pets, and sunseed. Glide-r-chow mainly uses soy protein (which I personally don't feel comfortable feeding my gliders)so I stopped feeding it. Pretty pets smells awful and my gliders refused to eat it. Sunseed is pretty good. You need to supplement it with calcium (according to my vet) and fuits and veggies (according to the package). My vet also mentioned that her veterinary books recommend a diet of 50% insectavore pellets and 50% led beaters. I do not have much experience with these creatures so I can't say which is healthiest but in my minimal experience my gliders have loved Sunseed pellets. The petsmart in Fairfax, Va even carries Sunseed in their store which makes it much more convenient. I think glide-r-chow has changed. The labe I have says 24% protein, 10% fat, 6% fiber, and 12% moisture. I just got my gliders about a month ago (... yes I know I am a horrible person for giving them my business). I also want to mention beware any "consumer reports" sites that have un-clickable contact information and don't allow you to register to rate companies. One of them has information claiming that Glide-R-Chow and Glide-A-mins are the best things to feed but their information doesn't have any sources. It is mentioned in another thread somewhere.

I'm curious to know which is the best staple food for gliders. I hear insectivore-fare/zoo-keeper's secret is good, but want to make sure if there's something better or maybe more affordable before I purchase online. i finished the sunseed one they sell at petsmart and other local pet stores. any suggestions?
