My Arthur has been gone well over a year now. He left behind 2 lovely ladies, Shimmer and Lilith and both had 6-8 week old joeys when he left us.
The joeys were all adopted (or out of that cage) by the time they were 4 months old and there havent been any other gliders in with the girls for about a year. They are fairing out fine, and seem to be happy healthy and very sweet ladies...
Well, I have been avoiding posting this to not sound like a moron but both of my girls have joeys IP! Shimmer has 2 babies IP that are prolly gonna come come OOP in about 2 weeks and Lilith has a single baby that is the size of 2 peas..... BIZARRE! Is it possible they have held fertilized embryos in there for this long and just now have decided they are ready to face Artie's offspring so long after he is gone?!
I am a little bit emotional about it, as I miss him so.. I am just sitting here staring at his urn and wondering how on earth it is possible after so long!
So tell me oh wise glider people/breeders is this possible.. Have Arthur and his girls' decided to give me a gift of more of his lil joeys?! And for fun some pics of my handsome Artie!

i have heard that gliders can keep fertilized eggs in stasis for up to 6 months but i havent heard of a year, but i am sure more educated on this subject will be along to help

It is possible for them to hold embryos for a year from what I've read, the longest I believe I've heard about before was 11 months. Artie was such a handsome fellow, congrats on the new joeys to be
Thanks everyone, I knoew they could delay an embryo's development I just didnt think they could hold it this long..
Yeesh.. I am excited to meet them, but scared for the girls raising them on their own (well they have eachother but still!)

Maybe having the male rescues helped them to decide to go ahead and have these babies! sounds crazy, but you know Mother Nature can pull off anything! Congrats! Can't wait to see them!

I dont think the rescues did it, as the girls are housed in a room (seperate cages of course)with other males and their mates and havent had any joeys yet.. And I am 100% certain there were no secret rendez-vous' between the girls and anyone (though they are beautiful and who could blame the other men for wanting to get to know them LOL)

How long ago did you take the joeys out of the cage? It's very possible that one of the make joeys impregnated the girls. I've had male joeys sexually mature as young as 7/8 weeks old. It's not at all uncommon for a male to be fully mature by 4 months old.

Better not be! Neither of the 2 boys had bald spots or chest glands developped when I took them out - and it was about 2 mos after Artie died (Not sooner because I was worried about the girls' stressin out with the kids gone too)...
*ugh*

My males all started developing around 4 mo. OOP. Hopefully Nicole's suggestion is not the case.
With the girls losing their mate & shortly after losing their children it is entirely possible that they were too stressed/grieving to deal with babies and chose to hold them in stasis.
How long do gliders grieve for their mate or after we remove their children? Maybe they were waiting for their sadness to pass and then give you little peanuts.
I had a male breed a female when he had no sign of a bald spot or chest gland. That isn't a fool proof indication of whether the male is sexually mature. I ended up with an absolutely beautiful and unexpected surprise that I absolutely adore!

Amanda, it's all water under the bridge at this point. Artie was a beautiful boy, and it's obvious how much you loved him. I hope you get at least one who looks just like his daddy! Enjoy the new babies, and neuter any males "just in case".
I had a rehome come to me that was only housed with her mom and dad and then at 8 months grrrrr was moved in with two neutered males. She gave birth to a single boy 6 months after moving in with the neutered males and then again 8 months after that to another single boy. My vet agreed after checking both neutered males that the father had to have inpregnated the female before she left and she had held both the joeys in statis (sp?). Unfortunatly she killed both joeys at 4 days OOP. She was very inbred herself ( that breeder has since "let" her license go ) But my point is, yes a female can hold joeys for over a yr and can hold a joey in each uterus.
I think the best thing for your peace of mind would be to assume they are Artie's, and just go with the flow. Keep a close eye out for complications due to not having a Father to help, and love them like we all know you can. Congrats on the soon-to-be new additions!
