Someone gave me a recipe for additives to the water that you can do a few times a month to try and tone down the smell of the urine? Does anyone know what it is? I am pretty sure it had vinager and honey?!!! I don't know really, I am just guessing now!

Meagan, The vinegar thing could have been mentioned recently, but the one I remember and have a printout of was posted by Charlie H 9/17/05. This is what he posted: "If you will mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar and two teaspoons of honey to one quart of water you will have the proper mix. We put the mix in the gliders bowl and fresh water in their bottle. Give them the mix for about three days each month and it helps eliminate the oder of urine and the gliders marking the cages. The gliders seem to like the mixture and it will not hurt them. Although the vinegar is not meant as a medication it does alter the ph of the water and will kill a certain amount of bacteria. The purpose is to aid in oder control." Charlie H The following day he posted this: "I don't think it would be wise to give this mixture to a young joey for the same reasons we avoid giving them antibiotics. Wait until they are six months or older. As far as shelf life I would not keep longer than a week and keep it refrigirated. Cut the amount of each item in half and dispose of the left overs. We have well over 50 rescues at all times so don't do things in small quantities." Charlie H The last paragraph was in response to someone asking amout making smaller quantities and shelf life. Hope this helps.

Wow! I couldn't go 2 weeks either! I use plain paper towel and change it every 3 days or as needed. What diet are you using? Sometimes that has an effect on the odor.

When I adopted my suggies the smell was horrible, The cage seemed to be clean but I took it apart and went to to car wash with it, happy to say I clean every other day and use puppy pea pads in the tray. No bad smells now. Yeah!!!

I would think that you could mix up the above recipe pour it into ice cube trays and freeze it then just take out a cube and thaw it before putting it in the cage for the gliders. I like the way my gliders smell. I think diet has a lot to do with it. I am switching to HPW soon and can't wait to see how they do on it.

Kimberley, Freezing is exactly what I did when I used the vinegar mixture. I don't have a problem with oder from Stryder as long as I clean his drop pan on a regular basis. My husband on the other hand thinks he stinks. Since Stryder has been here over three years, he's just kind of had to learn to live with it.

I feed HPW...I clean out the drop pans every other day. My old man is not neutered, although I wish he was, but I just can't see spending $300 on him to have him neutered! I can live with the funk...just wanted to know about this cocktail of a mix for the urine. Maybe that will help! Always open to try things new!

My husband on the other hand thinks he stinks. Since Stryder has been here over three years, he's just kind of had to learn to live with it He is just saying that cause he is jealous of the other man in your life. I like the way my girls smell. I don't have any little men so I don't know how they would smell. I even like the way my parrots smell, kind of a powdery fruit smell. Must be a momma thing. LOL
