Myst is doing well. She did tear a hole back open, it was under some scabbing, but it's only skin deep-meaning skin just has to fill in now. The majority of it stayed closed. smile No sign at all of infection-nice color to the surrounding skin, appetite and activity is good. I'm to keep putting the Silvodine/neosporin on it until it's healed completely. RiverStone and I both got pics (hers will be better, trust me), and we'll get them up as soon as we can. For now, I need to get at least a few hours sleep since I have to work tonight. So that's it for now, other than we had some good bonding time, but she is a little stressed from being out in a carry pouch so long-something she isn't used to. Yet.

And sort of off_topic - Jennifer, here is the thread with the pics I told you about (Last I knew the pics worked):

Here are the pics I promised. From just before stitches out, the procedure itself, and today. It looks worse than it is, because the neosporin makes the color more intense. Bear with me, there's a few pics/posts...

Oh my goodness!! Poor Myst!

She looks like she just ran a marathon while waking up! (adorable pic but sad too)

Is she bleeding much after having the stitches removed? It looks bloody in the last pic.

How is she doing now?

She's not bleeding, just raw. I took that pic a few minutes before posting it. It is slowly getting smaller.

I wish Mimzy looked that well.
It's scabbed over but they didn't stitch it because they said it was to dry. shakehead Although they are the ones that wouldn't see her sooner... tant

anyway, she looks all wet in the pictures. Is that from the neosporin? They gave me drops to put on Mimzy and she looks pretty much like that. I have wipes I would clean her with but I really don't want to irritate the wound so I haven't yet. Going to see what the vet says tomorrow but I'm thinking another week or so before I brave wiping it. Want her to do some good healing first.
Any advise would be greatly appreciated at this point. dunno

I dunno what it was exactly that the vet put on the wound after the stitches were taken out (I can't remember), Jen'll have to tell you that.

(All I really did while Myst was there was take the pics, and then get to say *Hi* to Flip and Snug after it was all over, so.) dunno

Myst will be going back to the vet tomorrow (later today, actually). frown That last wound just won't scab over or dry, and now is getting bigger again (I'll get the pics up I took earlier up in the morning while waiting between getting home from work and the vet opening). Not sure if we're going to have to try and stitch it again or what, but nothing I have tried is working. Put her back on oral antibiotics a few days ago when a bit of yellow appeared in the center of the wound-it seems to be keeping that from getting worse, but this simply isn't healing. *sigh* Will let you all know how the visit went when I get a chance-spent the last day and a half throwing up, and will be in sore need of sleep by the time I get back.

When my vet does this proceedure... I have him put drain tubes in. This allows the wound to drain from the inside out. Drain tubes are usually removed within four to five days with stitching left in place for another week.

When infected... the skin does not heal properly and this is the reason for the drain tubes.

As to the glider whose wound is hard and dry... vet needs to debreed it and then pull the skin up to close with suitures with a couple of drain tubes stitched into the skin. Oral antibiotic is then perscribed... and small amount of neosporin applied couple of times a day to help with the irritation.

Her stitches were in for 14 days, both oral meds and topical (neosporin and silvodine). When stitches were removed there was a very small raw spot near the center vet thought would heal, as it was only skin deep, no discoloration or signs of infection-it almost resembled a scrape at that point. That was March 01. Topicals were continued, but it has not improved. It's not at all dry, very moist looking. The area is under 1/2", but is deeper than it was, so back in she goes, and we'll see what happens.

Jen,
When Mareki had one of her SM patagium wounds that would NOT heal, I took her to a specialist down in Columbus (Dr. Burton) and he prescribed Synotic otic solution. It's a solvent solution that keeps the wound debrided as it heals and promotes faster healing. It's nasty stuff in that it immediately leaves a strong garlic-like taste in the mouth if you get even a drop of it on your skin, so you have to wear rubber gloves while administering it. But, it really did work! (With Mareki, that was a beneficial side effect because it prevented her desire to continue to SM the site.)
You might want to ask your vet about it as a possibility for helping to treat Myst. Keep in mind that it did not prevent the wound from closing, just kept the granulation from developing at the margins so that the wound actually healed more thoroughly without the scar tissue build up. Don't know if this will help with Myst or not, but thought it worth mentioning to you dunno
