avacados are fine in moderation! It is high in fat and if your not careful can make your glider fat. It is the better type of fat, but still is fat! Before I knew any better I gave 2 of my gliders avacados at least 2 or 3 times a week (just a little tiny bit) and now they are my biggest gliders <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />

Regarding potatoes, mashed potatoes are O.K. It is raw potatoes that can be dangerous as they contain toxic compounds referred to as glycoalkaloids (chaconine & solanine). Solanum alkaloids can be found in in green sprouts and green potato skins, which occurs when the tubers are exposed to sunlight during growth or after harvest. Both chaconine & solanine interfere with normal function of the central nervous system and irritate the gastrointestinal tract. The active ingredients affect cholinesterase activity and symptoms of illness include laboured breathing, weakness, paralysis and lack of consciousness. The effects on the intestines lead to inflammation of the intestinal mucosa, ulceration and pain.

Feeding raw sweet potatoes or even raw peanuts (you know the ones in the shell) is not recommended as they contain trypsin inhibitors: substances that inhibit or prevent the pancreas from producing trypsin which is an enzyme essential for the absorption of protein by the intestine. You should, therefore, cook sweet potatoes before giving them to your glider. For anyone who gives shelled peanuts to their gliders as a treat, please consider roasting the hulled (de-shelled) raw peanuts for twenty to thirty minutes at 300 degrees Fahrenheit, stirring them frequently as this will destroy the trypsin inhibitor and render the peanuts safe for your glider to eat.
