[:"blue"] Sundra, keepng you both in my prayers. Silly, Little Peeps, you better take your meds or all your Aunties will come hold you down AND Uncle Tom and Uncle Eddie Now, you sure don't want that to happen

Take care of both of you and keep those updates coming. [/]

She still seems to be on the mend. She just had her first fully formed stool. That's what I've been waiting to see. I was hoping for one this morning, but it was still loose then. However, she was definitely feeling better. She was like, "hyperglider" this morning.

She hasn't eaten much yet tonight, but she's been snacking in my bra a lot today. I still wish she'd drink more, but I guess the watermelon and cantaloup are watery enough.

I'll give her the message, Karen. She was still very difficult at med time tonight. If I tell her Uncle Eddie and Uncle Tom are gonna come along with ALL her aunties, maybe she'll shape up.

The fruits you give her are liquid enough and that is keeping her hydrated thank goodness, you are doing great with her and that is what she needs, thank God she is doing better. She is going to need more nutrition though so feed mealies and veggies when she will eat them, my thoughts and prayers are with you and the wee one!!!

Wow! This is great news! Everything happens for a reason. You were meant to be at the vet when you were, and they were meant to collect and analyze her samples, and properly diagnose and treat her condition. After two two-month stints of diarrhea myself, I can certainly relate to the excitement of seeing a normal bowel movement! Way to go Peepers! Her appetite and energy level should continue to improve. It's great she's grooming herself (and you ), too! It's all good!

Sending continued prayers and your way.

Okay, Peeps seems to be out of the woods. She is grooming herself now as I type. Her stools are normal (I know where each one is in the cage and when it was produced, lol. I washed and disinfected the wheel today and used Clorox wipes on the rest of the cage and there are 2 new ones on the wheel and one on the bottom grate.) she's feeling fine, eating okay (I never have felt she eats enough) and is not dehydrated at all.

She's still on the Baytril and Metro twice a day. It worked when I told her that her aunties and uncles were going to come make her take her meds. It's been easier to get her to open her mouth for them. She said "Oh no! Not Eddie and Tom! Okay, I'll be good!"

I'm actually dreading when she's not on the meds. For now, I feel like she's protected being on them, but once she's off, I'm so worried she'll get sick again and I won't catch it quick enough. I just wish I knew how she keeps getting this stuff. I'm going to keep her on the meds as long as the vet thinks it's wise and I'm going to be diligent about cleaning the cage very frequently. The vet tech said a 10% bleach solution is the best thing to use to clean even pouches and stuff. I'll use that on the cage, but I hate to get all my pretty pouches faded. I'd rather soak them in alcohol or something, set them in the sun, wash them in hot water, whatever. I'll have to be sure to wear old clothes when I do the cage. I always seem to splash myself somewhere when I work with bleach.

So I've been told the most common way for animals to contract giardia (and I assume trichs are the same) is from water. But I thought that was just standing water, like when a dog drinks out of a puddle or something. I've been told other ways gliders can get it is if their fruit isn't washed properly. I used to buy my fruit already cut up, so it's possible the guy in the produce section of HEB didn't do his due diligence, so maybe they got it there the first time. But since the first time they got sick, I've been good about washing the fruit myself and not feeding anything that's too difficult to get clean (like blackberries, etc.) so I do'nt know if it's just been staying dormant in their systems or if they are getting it from something I'm not thinking of. Any ideas?

I'm so glad that she's feeling better! I was so worried about all of you. As to the giardia I have no clue on that one. It's something I've never experienced...... Now if you had a question about her teeth I might be able to answer that one for you.

Grapefruit seed extract is pretty good for washing produce.

[:"green"]When we lived in Africa, we used to have to wash all of our produce in an iodine solution... I'll check with my mom on how much iodine we had to use & in how much water - it seems to me that it was only a few drops, but I don't remember how much water it was used in. I do know that this was a precaution to prevent contracting giardia - one of the higher health risks where we were living...

So glad to hear the Peepers is doing so much better!

And Sundra, I had the same fear after my gliders finished all their meds for giardia. I kept wondering What if isn't not all gone? What if it comes back? What if I don't catch it in time? What if they're not strong enought to fight it next time? What did I miss the first time that let them catch it? That was a big one for me because I thought I was doing a lot to make sure they didn't get it (used bottled water, washed fruit, chooped fruit, washed again, and froze the fruits, etc.) but they still did.

All I can say is that as the pain of losing Jeepers and watching Peepers go through what she did lessens, so does the constant worry. I know I'll always be super careful, but I also accepted that I can't prevent everything from happening, I can only do the best I can.

Ok, enough of my rambling LOL Just thrilled to hear Peepers is doing great!

[:"green"]I checked with my mom on the iodine solution... She said to put in just enough iodine that it makes the water look like weak tea.

It's amazing how these tiny critters can steal our hearts in such a huge way. I first posted on this site when my little Flo was ill. While nothing can relieve your worries, I hope all these prayers and good thoughts are helping you, Peepers and the rest of your family. It helped me so much just knowing that people cared and took the time to say so. Please keep us updated on Peepers.

Sundra, it's possible it's been dormant and recurring. That's why I suggested the longer course of meds. If it is, and becoming resistant...you NEED to keep her on the Metro until ALL CHANCE of reinfection is gone. 3 weeks minimum. And don't stop disinfecting her cage/pouch(es)/toys before then.

Loads of hugs and I'm glad to hear of improvement.

I talked to the vet today and he said the culture and sensitivity grew klebsiella bacteria, and he seems to think that's more the cause of her problems than the trichomonads. I don't quite understand why he believes that given that he said her fecal had SO many trichs, but he's the doctor. He said the kleb was sensitive to Baytril, so we have her on the right stuff.

I forgot to ask how long to keep her on the meds. He originally said 8 days, but I'm with you Jen, and I'm not sure that's long enough. However, I do worry about keeping her on them too long due to possible problems with liver or something.

I just spent the past 3 1/2 hours totally sanitizing everything I have for gliders and my African Grey too (it occurred to me that he could catch this too). I took the cages outside and washed them then sprayed with 10% bleach and rinsed really well (did the bleach twice). Then I also soaked every glider toy and dish I have in 10% bleach solution and ran all my pouches through the wash on hot. We are GOING to kick this stuff outa here!

Yay for bleach & hot water - Good job Mama-Bear! I would have to agree about the Baytril. 8 days seems pretty short, however, I wouldn't just continue it without consulting him. Perhaps he'll have you continue the Baytril for the full 8 days, then switch antibiotics - who knows, you docs are all loons!

Whew~~~ SOOOO glad to see that Peepers is on the right track now. I had no doubts though with a Mommy like you. She is in very very good hands right now and no doubt in my mind that she is just sucking up all this extra attention.
Keep us posted.

Hey, Sundra...hoping Peepers is still on the mend! (Also, is she still on the meds?) Haven't seen an update for a bit.
