Dr. Harris did a necropsy on Flip today...we knew she had asthma (via Xray on 02.05.10), a dominance wound on the back of her neck, and likely hypothyroidism (T4 panel is still pending) but none of them seemed enough to kill her. Flip was approximately 7-8 years of age at her death on 02.06.10 at 5 a.m.
About 2 hours before her death, she came up soaking wet on her underside from chin to tail with no indication where it came from. Possibility of food or drink thought of, but nothing was disturbed, so the idea was discarded.
Results of necropsy are: that the fluid on her underside was from her lungs. She had Pulmonary Edema-a very large buildup of fluid in the chest cavity around the lungs, secondary to asthma, and there was also foam in the lungs, indicating cause of death was technically drowning from the large amount of fluid. All other organs were in good shape with a small amount of fatty tissue present in both the lungs and liver, but not enough to cause death, and likely from the weight issue thought to be caused by an underactive thyroid, which may have resolved with treatment.
T4 panel results are still pending, and although it was not her cause of death, that and the wound likely contributed by overloading her immune system.
Flip was a mill bred glider.

Jen, asthma generally effects the airways more so than the lungs. What you are describing with the inflamed lungs sounds more like a lung infection or irritation of the lungs instead of asthma. With her having the fluid build up in the lungs, that most likely wasn't asthma but a secondary infection caused by the lowered immune system. (such as bronchitis or pneumonia)
