So I woke up and and saw my male glider hissing quiet a bit.. He is neutered and has hissed on and off since he's gotten neutered, but today was much more than normal.. He was licking it quiet a bit and he was licking it when I took him out to get these pics.. He's still feisty like he's always been and this morning he WAS pooping when I first noticed this.. I know he's eating because their food dish is cleaned off.. He's in the cage with just 1 other, a female..

I know this is a problem, but I don't know what exactly the problem is.. Assuming something with the anal glands?

I also assume I should rush him to the emergency room this minute? Only problem is I wont be able to afford any surgery or anything else major if it's needed..

Pics below.. Which were hard to take because he kept running and jumping around..

This looks something like the pictures of a prolapsed bladder that I've seen, except.. redder. :/ I am no expert though, so I could be wrong...

Anyway, with the hissing, I would assume that he is in pain. I would really get your little guy to a vet ASAP. See if they will make payment plans with you.

Yes, your glider needs to be seen by a veterinarian. It could be any number of things from a prolapse to impacted anal glands, only a veterinarian can determine what is going on.

Is he able to urinate and deficate? As long as he isn't chewing on himself you should be ok for tonight but I would get him into the veterinarian tomorrow.

He was deficating when I noticed it this afternoon when I woke up (around 1pst, it's 4pst now).. I haven't noticed him urinate but at the same time he's been in the pouch sleeping except when I've taken him out for pictures..

I only trust 2 vets around me, and mine is out until december 9th.. The only other place is the emergency room which is much more expensive and they don't do payment plans.. And I haven't noticed him chew on himself, just licking the two times he's been awake.. I can hear him making noise inside the pouch but the normal noises gliders always make with one another, and it's only when they're going back to sleep..

Where abouts are you located? Someone might know of a good vet that will do a payment plan.

I would not wait until the 9th to have him seen, where are you located some of our members can help you find a vet in your area that is good.

You can also take the contact information along with you for the veterinarians that will consult with other vets on gliders. Vets that will consult

Hopefully when you get him in to the emergency veterinarian it won't involve surgery. Please keep us posted on his progress.

Has it gone back in?

When my gliders are really stressed, like at the vet, I've seen them push their cloaca out and you can see the "redder" part on the inside, sort of similar to that.

However, they always retract it back in within a minute or two. If it's been out any longer than that, I agree, I'm glad you're seeing a vet right away. Hope you can keep us posted!

Took him to the emergency room.. Thankfully they had a credit thing that I got to pay.. His cloaca was actually starting to go in a little bit when I saw him before I left the vet.. I had to see him and give him a kiss before I walked out..

The vet did say it was prolapsed and that they're going to take some tests for the lab.. And they're keeping him overnight to fix the problem.. Going to put it back in, and place some stuff around it that they use to "seal" it so it more the less stays in and they're going to start him on some anti biotics since it's been sitting out and rubbing against things and out in the open air..

Although I'm extremely stressed about not having him for the night.. I'm worried about leaving him there alone.. He's never been away from his partner or me for that matter for more than half a day.. I've had bad luck about leaving an animal overnight at the vet, it died before I got there the next day, so.. You can understand being extremely worried/stressed out over that..

I know it's extremely hard to not have him with you. It's obvious how much you love him. I'm so glad you were able to take him and get care! While this problem isn't common, it's not unheard of and has good results. I had a similar problem with two of my gliders having a prolapsed penis. Their cloacas were extremely swollen and I was scared to death. But they're fine and healthy now!

Your baby is at the best place he can be for his medical problem right now. I'll be sending prayers your way! Please update us as soon as you know anything!

I plan on calling at around midnight before I go to sleep and when I wake up before work in the morning to check on him..

One thing I am worried about is what's causing it.. The vet listed a few things and worms were one, and cancer being another.. He said since he's fairly young (about 3 years old) that he doubts that's the case and puts it at the bottom of the list.. But still a worry for me..

I would be worried too. I hope that's not the case. Have you heard anything else from the vet? How is he doing and when does he get to come home?

Sorry it's hard for me to reply in the morning.. Wake up and head to work basically.. Then the site was down for me for a few hours..

He's home and he's urinating and he has some stitches back there to hold his area in place.. He's having an extremely hard time passing fecal.. He's straining alot and struggling.. I talked to the vet when I got home (he was picked up while I was at work, so I could have him back in his normal housing asap for less stress) and he said to monitor him closely to check to see if he deficates, and he did, but it was difficult and it was very skinny.. I think he's pretty tight back there right now being swollen, sore and having the stitches (i forget what they're really called off hand, very long day) holding things in place.. He's eating and urinating and moving fine..

They said he had eaten hair.. Though he said it was too hard to figure out if it was mine or an animals.. I have a long haired cat that's in my room, but she's so old she doesn't care about them.. I do know that i'm going to be very careful about keeping hairs of anykind away from their cages now.. It never came to mind that hair would be a problem.. He didn't specify exactly if that's what caused him to be prolapsed, as he did say he's still waiting for the lab results and they'll notify me when they get them.. I'm going to call back tomorrow and let the vet know that he's urinating with ease and deficating but with great straining and struggle to do so.. I'm wondering if maybe when he heals up more it'll be easier to pass..

One thing he did say, is he hopes all the hair has passed through otherwise he will need surgery to get the rest out, which scares me to be honest.. I feel like it's my fault, but I would have never guessed that.. hair of all things would cause this..

Thanks for all the prayers and replies, i'm hoping and praying myself that things start looking better asap because it's so stressful and hard to not be with him all day during these times..

Glad to hear he is home and doing a bit better. You could try giving him some apple juice or a little prune juice to soften up his feces till he gets the stitches out.

Keep us posted on his progress.

I just checked on him again, and he's acting pretty crabby.. I noticed his sutchers(?) are gone.. I think he pulled them out.. I hope all he did was pull them out and drop them on the floor.. He's getting a little less red down there and it looks like it's healing up a little more than yesterday.. I hope it keeps going that way..

Is he in an ecollar? If he is, you can put some Preparation H on his cloaca to help reduce the swelling. If he's not in an ecollar tho, don't use the Preparation H. I had to use this on two of my gliders who had swelling problems, one of which was the cloaca.

It's NOT your fault that your baby ate hair! I my hair is so long, it goes down below my waist. I never dreamed of my gliders eating it! Because of your situation, I will be extra diligent in checking every cage for my hair! Thank you! You've prob saved at least one of my gliders from a severe medical problem!

Well he's going back to the vet now.. It looks like his problem is coming back.. He was doing much better recently until today I noticed this morning it wasn't looking that great (coming back out) and I just got off work and it's looking alot worse and he seems to be hissing again when trying to deficate, where as he wasn't very much or at all the past 2 days.. I did notice 1 small piece of hair yesterday when I was checking, it was cat hair, not human..

He's also doing something he never did before.. When he's going back to a pouch, if he goes in one alone, he'll start making noises as if he's in there playing with another glider, but I checked and she was in the bottom pouch.. I've noticed him do this a few times recently, but never before this problem.. He also did it when not alone..

I was really happy he seemed like he was improving recently but now that it's going back and the new stuff he's doing is just so stressful.. I don't want to bring him back to the vet and stress him out either but I really have no options..

I wonder if he could be making noises that would indicate his thinking about SM? I hope that made sense. At any rate, I'm so glad you're taking him back to the vet. Please let us know what happens!

I called the vet and decided not to take him in until tomorrow.. I talked to the vet that's really good with gliders (he's on a list I got from here actually) and he's going tomorrow morning at around 8:20.. He says he thinks the problem is that now he's not "tight" back there anymore and needs the stitches to stay in longer to tighten things back up how they were.. And 24 hours really isn't long enough.. Might have lab information then also.. I'll post an update as soon as I can tomorrow.. I'm praying for good stuff..
