Yes, I just talked to Dan and he is taking the glier in now. I think he said it was either an hour or 100 miles. But there is a Dr. Stewart that will be on duty that knows about gliders and has treated alot of them. His number is posted on this board under vets.

The little guy's foot has once again turned very black and hard in the last 24 hours or less so he is takeing him in now.

If he doesnt post and I hear from him I will update you. He said he hasnt had a chance to update since he worked last night and didn't get home untill about 4AM and slept.

Let's keep the prayers going.

Thank you So much for updating us Ellen- I've been checking back here several times the last few days to see how Baby's doing...From the first pics he showed I too though that it looked as though the entire food needed to be amputated...but I'm not a vet so I've held my thoughts as it seemed that others had already clearly voiced what I was thinking...Dan is such a good Glider Daddy..He's taking A-1 care of his Baby...
Dan-You and your Baby are in my Thoughts and Prayers...Please do try to get some rest and take care of yourself-you must be exhausted from the stress of all of this...along with the regular going on's of life...

Hopefully this new vet will be able to offer him a new treatment that little Baby will quickly respond to.

Dan, we are all here for both you and *Tripod*

You are doing everything you can and in the end, when he is all better and healed up, you are going to have one glider that wants nothing to do with anyone else but his slave that went above and beyond to make him all better!!

Hopefully we will have an update soon.

I spoke to Dan last night around 1 and he said the glider was doing good. The vet gave him some meds, anitbiotics, and soaking solution. The vet his optomistic that the tissue can grow back, but it is a waiting game over the next few days to see if an infection flares up. If it does more than likely an amputation at the knee will need to be done. He says he his baby is eating good and is loving his new tunnel that he was sent. Dan had alot to do today with getting things together for the glider as well as rescuing two snakes. He was tired last night and said he would give an update today when all is settled and he gets his stuff done today.

Ok, I just got caught up on all of the posts. Thank you all again for your concern and support. It means so much…

Here's the update. Over 3 hours at the animal hospital, and the doc finally saw us. They were VERY busy! Anyway, the vet said he may have to amputate, but he wasn't convinced that it was mandatory. He said it would be an easier healing process for both me and the glider, but I insisted that if he can in any way keep his foot, than I'll tough it out. He said if he amputated, it would take just a few weeks for him to recover; saving the foot would be a few months! I opted for the long and hard road in the hopes that he'll have a foot. So the doc gave me an antibiotic, pain meds, a soaking solution, and a dilution percentage for the Baytril I have here. So, I'm giving him pain meds once a day, antibiotics 2x a day, and soaking his foot 3x a day. So, needless to say, I have my work cut out for me. The doc said that if his foot doesn't get worse in a few days, that the necrotic tissue will fall off and new tissue will replace it and heal over ok. The good news is his foot is looking a little better today; no inflammation, and looks more pink on the top and a little more pink and red on the bottom. I think the meds are working and preventing the dead tissue from spreading. I'll know in a few days. He is still eating, drinking, and he takes his meds pretty well. He's eating so well, I may have to call him "piggy"... lol! He hasn't crabbed, or tried to bite me once during this ordeal. He's been a pure angel.

This morning I discovered that he got the ecollar off again. No idea how he did this, but he did. (Maybe I should name him Houdini?) The good thing is he didn't attack his foot at all! So, I think the pain meds are doing their thing. I'm giving him the pain meds at night so they are strongest when he is awake and just in case he gets the collar off in the middle of the night. I can watch him during the day, but at night... well, I gotta sleep sometime. So, let's just say I was relieved that he didn't attack his foot again. I think that's the best news so far.

The Doc said he’s going to be in the Rubbermaid container for a few months. Even after his foot heals, the ecollar should remain on because he may sm again due to some tingling he may sense in that area. In a few moths, I’ll take it off and watch him closely to see how he’s acting. If all is good, he’ll be a happy juvenile.

Thanks again for the support from everyone. I'll post as much as I can with updates as they occur. Until next time, keep your fingers crossed for the lil stinker! :-P

---Dan

Oh Dan- You're such a WONDERFUL DADDY! I'm Sure this little baby will have a special place in your heart forever...I'm so glad to hear that the vet thinks it may respond to treatment! Do try to keep us posted as you find time...it does sound like you have a long road ahead of you, but I'm sure that with love and time this too shall pass and this amazingly sweet and tolerant little man will only love you more for it in the end!
~My Best to you BOTH!~

For some reason, tonight he became extremely fiesty. He even crabbed at me and snapped at my nose! I don't know why he's doing this... maybe he's feeling better and he's bored in the rubbermaid? He's jumping around and trying to get out as much as he can. When I take him out, he tries to jump everywhere so I need to leave him in.

What do you all think? Why is he all of a sudden so energetic?

Hopefully the energy means that the antibiotics & pain meds are working and this little guy is starting to feel better & wants something to do. You might try some toys that he can manipulate--feathers, pom poms or even live mealies for him to chase around. I know with the e-collar it will be harder for him to do lots, but it might amuse him for a little while at least.
Also, I want to add my "Way to Go Dan!" You're doing an awsome job with this little guy and we are all pulling for you and your little "Houdini"

Dan, we've already spoken also, but I just wanted to put in my two cents here and tell you how very lucky that lil guy is to have you in his life. Thank you for all you are trying to do for him. I would hate to see how this would have turned out if he had been with someone less caring.

Also, I agree with Teresa, try putting a couple of toys in there for him, a couple of wiffel balls or some balls with the bells in the middle. He is probably starting to feel better and being on pain meds, his foot doesnt bother him as much as if probably wondering what he can get himself into!!

Keep up the good work!!

Dan I am so happy to hear that your baby is doing better. Thank you for posting this so that all of us noobs can learn about what to do in situations like this. I know this has not been easy on you, but I really do want to thank you.

I know you said you would not post who made the pouch and I am not going to ask, but is there anyway you could post what the design defect was? I am very new here and would really appreciate knowing what to look out for.

Please send my best to the little escape artist as well

The defect, in my opinion, was that the "window" part of the pouch was not fully sewn into the pouch fleece. It was fully attached, but the window was bigger than the opening which left about 1.5" of window material to hang inside the pouch. The gliders chewed through the window screen and the border of the screen is what he got tangled in mostly. I'm attaching a pic of what the inside of the pouch looks like now. As you can see, I already cut where the bottom of the window was extending, but you can see the side still has the border and you can see how it extends outside of the stitching to the fleece. The bottom part, where he got caught, was a bit longer than the sides. If you look closely, you can see the stitching and how far it is away from the area I cut. The window extended about an inch past where I cut and it had the fabric border attached.

If you have a pouch like this, I recommend that you don't leave it in the cage, and I also recommend that you sew the border to the fleece part. That should make it safer.

Thank you so much for that picture and description. I have the same pouch (or at least one that looks exactly like it) and will make the changes you recommended before giving it to my gliders.

[:"green"]From looking at the pouch, I would recommend that in the future, this type of pouch be made with a double layer of fleece which would totally cover the currently-exposed border of screening on the inside. I am not an expert seamstress, but have enough knowledge of sewing (and have made enough pouches) to be fairly confident in stating that it would not be difficult to do. By double layering the fleece, with the window screening sandwiched between the two layers, I think it would totally eliminate the potential for what happened to your little "Houdini"...
Just my 2 cents worth...

Wow, this post has been very interesting. I commend you on the decision you made and hope it works out for the best. If you haven't I would but several toys in there with him that he can throw around and maybe a small blanket just to help the boredom which is all I would think it is. Good luck.

Update: It looks like his foot has not gotten worse. The necrotic tissue does not seem to be spreading. I think whatever dead tissue there is will fall off as all 3 vets claimed. The collar, painkillers, and meds have helped immensely here. I can honestly say that without the help of this board and its members, this lil baby may not be alive today. He has a good chance of living a happy life now.

I'll be sure to post again when I notice any changes with him and his foot.

Yea, I am feeling soooo much better now. It seems like it's just going to be a boring and monotonous daily routine with soaking his foot and giving him his meds. My stress levels have now almost returned to normal... :-)

I am so happy that he is doing better. If it wasn't for those meds the dead tissue could have spread. You have done a great job with him I am glad that GliderCentral and all of it's members were here to help you and your glider when you needed it.
P.S. we still want updates though

Great news!! Hoping for more positive updates from here on out. I said before, but without a dedicated owner, all the help in the world won't do much. So don't forget that your willingness to do what is necessary is a huge part of his recovery! Way to Go-to both of you!
