I find ASGA's opinions rather amusing. They are worried about the vitamins and the honey, but not the yogurt, which is what I worry about with BML. My glider will not eat yogurt and I'm glad because I personally feel he shouldn't. I don't like to feed dairy products to my glider even if it is somewhat broken down. I think that using the yogurt in the BML is fine, but I worry about the risk of high lactose or high bacteria. Neither of which is good.

Their opinions aren't so much amusing.. they're just opinions. Nothing wrong with that; it's just a shame they can't back up whatever it is they're trying to prove. Or not a shame at ALL, as the case may be.

And .. actually, the natural yogurt is good BECAUSE of the high bacteria; because these are GOOD bacteria, who help with the glider's digestive tract and all other manner of things.

I really am slightly confused as to why subject goes over and over.. and I doubt it will ever really stop. There is always going to be competition, and always going to be controversy. But until someone gives me some solid proof of why BML is bad (I'm not going to hold my breath; it'll be a long wait, if not an infinite one), then I'll just let them get on with it. S'up to them. As of now, I'm going to wash my hands of the subject.

Did you know that since the 1930's milk has been fortified with 10 micrograms (400IU)of VitaminD per quart. As a result rickets(a bone disease seen in children) is now uncommon in the U.S.
Another item of interest, the main source for the VitD is from the brains of cattle, the brains and skin of swine. Gliders need the calcium supplement with VitD3, but as to the exact amount, I'll leave that up to the experts. My vet with whom I disagree, said the glider would get enough D3 from its regular diet. Since we do not feed any fish products or other foods that contain any significant amount of VitD, we will continue to suppliment. We have been raising gliders for 7 years on the BML diet, so I trust the amounts specified in that particular diet. I'm not saying this the diet to end all diet research, just saying it works for us so until something that is better is proven we will be staying with it.

I don't want to stir things up but you can overdose on calcium although not common cronic use can lead to overdose which can cause kidney damage and other problems.

This is an article from a fairly respected source.

"Lactose intolerance" when discussed in relation to gliders is generally misunderstood. Yogurt is actually good for gliders. Here is an article written by Caroline MacPherson that should help you out a little.

I've read all the posts this time, as well as the last year of diet debates(I've been reading about gliders here for a year, just joined when I was going to get one) did my own homework and research on the web, and my OPINION is to go BML with my gliders. Since I stopped "eyeballing" how much fruits, veggies and BML and using my measuring spoons, things have gone WONDERFULLY with my babies. I'm a huge worrywart, you've seen me post many questions, I want what's best for my gliders, and I choose Bourbon's diet, not only for the fact it is proven in years of use of keeping gliders healthy, happ and living long lives(or should I say NOT proven harmful EVER? LOL) Captive gliders are living YEARS longer than wild gliders (on average) and many of these ARE on the BML diet (I'd love to know actual percentages of diets used versus lifespan, but we'd never get something scientific with multiple owners, the fruits/veggies and insects would have to be the exact same per day, per amount, same number of gliders per cage, neutered/spayed/unaltered equalities not to mention bonding, habitats, etc etc etc it goes on FOREVER) What does Bourbon gain for sharing her recipe? Well, it seems the only thing she's gaining is a ton of attitude and grief and arguments and questions from some, but MANY happy healthy gliders of people who choose to follow the plan. Is it worth the flapping fingers for her? Some days I doubt it, but I don't see any cash lining her pockets for this help she gives, in fact, I see a person dedicated enough to gliders to spend countless hours researching/quesitoning/answering anythign she can find out for the betterment of gliders in general, not just hers...Kudos Bourbon, my hat's off to you, I appreciate the diet plan suggestions, and follow it exactly, and happily will as long as I have gliders, UNLESS YOU suggest something else, because I know you won't do it for profit, but for their health, out of glider love...THANK YOU, I feel like I can't say that enough for all you've done for us, and that, my glider pals, will be my ONLY comments about diet EVER...

That's interesting, the American Sugar Glider Society article is no longer online. In fact, the entire ASGS website is gone. What happened? Did the American Sugar Glider Society go defunct?

OK, so what's the status of the American Sugar Glider Society? Do they still exist? They apparently don't have a website anymore.

This should probably be moved to another topic, but to my knowledge, ASGS is no longer.

I'm going to close this topic since the original thread deals with a site that is no longer up. Please feel free to start a new topic if you have any questions.
