So,little Black Bart will be 6 weeks...all too soon for my liking lol. He is actually 35 days I believe. And I am going to get started on his baby cage. Should I hang his pouch or lay it on the bottom or both? Should I put toys and such in it (like his jungle gym and hangy toys? Hammocks? Is there anything that
I shouldn't put in it(anything normal for adults)??

I'm thinking it should be small to start with? (I'm worried he will get lost in it and get cold) Maybe like a small lovebird cage? Enough room for him to start moving about and climbing/playing, but small enough for him to be able to navigate back to the warmth

Any advice would be great!

Once he is 8-10 weeks (about the age you want to separate), he will be able to regulate his own body heat and will be eating and moving around well on his own. You will be surprised how much he grows in just the next couple of weeks.

A smaller cage is fine to start with, if you want, but he is used to his parent's cage, so will be fine with whatever. He will probably be interested in exploring after a while, so set up his cage just as you would an adult's cage. You can hang a couple of warm pouches and put in warm blankets for him to snuggle in each pouch.

He will cry initially (looking for his parents) so be ready to reassure him and check on him when he calls out.

Thanks Gretchen, I am his mommy smile He was rejected at a day old. He, right now, lives in my bra and an incubator (will post pic's when they finish uploading) Suz site says about 6 weeks is when I will be able to move him to a cage (I think I will wait until 7 weeks though)

Oh right! (smacks self in head) sorry about that. I would probably start small then, so he isn't overwhelmed initially. Give him several blankets in each pouch you use, they really cuddle in. And check on him often the first day/night he has been switched to make sure he is regulating his body heat properly. I would keep him in a warmer part of the house for a while to help him adjust as well. thumb

Halo from Malaysia. When i got Elmira, female, she was only 5 weeks oop.

I was wondering how will i house her.. Emm, but the day i brought her home, is already night time, she is active and playful surprisingly.. So i decided the 3 feet bird cage would remain the same without any adjustments..

Tot i hang the sleeping pouch low but she refused to enter it hung low. So i hung at the highest, and there she is, as happy as she can be.

Feeding her mealworms too are easy. She was not trained to take mealies at first when i got her, so i placed a few at the bowl, the next day, all 5 mealies gone. smile She has been behaving OK so far.

She is 73gm at the age of 3months.. Is that normal?

Thanks! I like hearing experiences and such so I can gauge my decision on possible outcomes laugh Was your girl living in a normal cage when you got her? with or without her parents?

73gm is good for 3 months.
Thanks again

Amber,
With hand-raised joeys, you want to start with a small cage. A lovebird cage is perfect thumb You will hang the pouch from the side of the cage about halfway up and you will place the heating pad underneath the cage just like with the incubator. Line the cage with fleece blankies and toys, just like the incubator too. Make sure one end of the cage does not have the heating pad under it so you can set the food at that end. You will need to place a water bottle with a shallow bowl under it so she can learn to drink from the bottle. The bowl is to catch any drips so the blankies don't get wet.
As she gets older you can gradually start to add extra toys. By the time she's 9-10 weeks oop she will be ready for a full-size cage heart
Hope this helps laugh

She was hand-raised as she was rejected by mommy. She stays in an incubator make out of a plastik tank and fleece blankets. Am so surprise when she can climb here n there amid the surrounding she used to be in. Happy little fella now. But i think i will have to do some info searching as i might be expecting 2 sets of twins [different age] still IP. Keke =) Haha. Me looking forward for them. Been preparing for all i need in case of emergency.

Ok, I set up a small cage for him, made a small no-sew trampoline, ring tree thing, put in his jungle gym and his bear and Hippo, a shelf, food bowl, pouches(one hanging, one on floor), water bottle, floor toys and lots of fleece...Tell me what ya think!

Anything that should be added/subtracted.

EDIT: I was thinking maybe I should cover 3 sides to keep any drafts out? He tends to sleep on the floor, not in a pouch, but balled up between blankies and his pouch.

Hi Amber
hug2 Looks good. It seems so strange putting them in a big boy cage. They grow way faster then they should.
I found that with both they liked to crawl up in the fleece on the floor and took them a but to go to the pouch.
Is he doing a lot of exploring yet? Is Bart related to any of our children? lol

He explores, but likes to stay near me..such a momma's boy..lol He loves his jungle gym, he plays on it every night now. And he loves to crawl around under my shirt.. laugh

Let me work this out...
Dulcy and Alibi are twin sisters.
Toby and Dulcy are the parents of the two you got from me.
Toby and Alibi are the parents of Slevin.
Slevin is Bart's daddy.
So, they are related! laugh

And to make things better..lol Scooter is Bart's Great Uncle!

Amber,
It looks great! Yes, you can put a cage cover on to block it from drafts heart

Thanks Suz!

Well, he was exploring last night! I didn't see him climbing on the bars or anything, but he was in the hanging pouch this morning (his bear is right next to it so I'm thinking he climbed up his bear to get to it.

While I don't have any babies, covering three sides is a great idea. I cover three sides and the top of my glider's cages.

Your little guy looks great!
