WHEN MAISIE MET SHELLY

On February, 29, 2008, I had to go to the court house to pay our property taxes. tounge One of my best friends that is not a sugar glider owner is the Clerk & Master. I always visit with Shelly when I am in the court house. hug2 On that visit, I introduced Maisie to Shelly. I took Maisie out of my tank top, gently opened her pouch, and showed her to Shelly. Well, of course, Shelly wanted to hold Maisie. Maisie went under Shelly's shirt jacket. A few minutes later, Shelly lifted her shirt jacket and started to talk softly and swettly to Maisie. Maisie did not want any part of Shelly talking to her, looking at her or visiting with Shelly any more. Maisie crabbed like I had not heard her before. Then, Maisie made the "I want my mommy" call. I started to talk to her and reached down and picked her up. Maisie went right back into her pouch and was as happy as she could be, as was mommy. cloud9

Maisie is eating every 4 hours, 1.4 cc every time, pooping most of the time and peeing every time. Maisie comes out of my tank top at 7:00 pm every night and plays under my sweatshirt for an hour and a half. mlove She is the sweetest, most beautiful, most amazing joey ever. I am continuing to weigh Maisie daily. She still weighs 34 grams.

I just got off the phone with Denise, I told her about Maisie's weight staying the same and she reminded me that I would beat myself up over Maisie's weight if I weighed her daily. She is right. I told Denise and myself that Maisie's tail is getting thicker, she is happy and healthy. Denise then reminded me that I just need to be patient. She has probably just hit a plateau and will start gaining soon. need_hug

I am planning on taking my camera to the store that it was purchased from tomorrow. I need positive thoughts on getting it fixed or replaced for a minimal amount of money. I will post pics of Maisie's portable incubator, inside and out, layer by layer, and Maisie as soon as I can. I still can not believe that my camera fell out of my pocket into a sink full of dish water. tounge

Suz, thank you for letting me know. I thought that a plateau would be normal, but hearing it from you sets my mind at ease. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

I weighed Maisie this morning and she weighs 34 grams.

I just got off the phone with Sony. I am sending my camera in for repair. Hopefully I will get it back in 2 weeks or less. Then, I will be able to make pictures of Maisie and my portable incubator.

Maisie has FINALLY gotten off of her plateau. dance She weighed 36 grams this morning. I feel so much better now. cloud9 Maisie is now eating 1.5 cc every 6 hours.

Yesterday, I noticed that Maisie appeared a slight bit dehydrated. confused I did the tent test on her back, and she was ever so slightly dehydrated. cry That kicked mommy into overdrive. I offered her spring water from a syringe. She took 1.5 cc of water. I have been mixing her baby bml with water, but she must not be getting enough. dunno I have been offering her water every time she eats now and she takes .5 cc. Now, when I do the tent test, there are no signs of dehydration.

Today at 10:00am and 2:00pm when I woke Maisie up to eat, she did not open her right eye when she opened her left one. I checked for matting, swelling, redness, irritation, anything that appeared out of the ordinary, I found nothing. When I woke her up at 6:00pm to eat, both eyes were opened at the same time. I will continue to monitor her eyes until I see no signs of them being different. I kinda think that she might be left eye dominant and just keeps the right one closed for a few seconds longer when she wakes up.

Maisie's tail is so cute. cloud9 At times, she holds it as straight as any other glider's that I have seen. Other times, her tail is curlier than my hair. I know that might be hard for some of you that have met me to believe, lol.

Speaking of my hair, Maisie has found that she can hide in my hair. clown Yesterday, I had my hair in a pony tail. When Maisie came out for playtime, she went straight for my hair. She climbed from my neck up through my ponytail. When she stopped, her head was poking out of the top of my pony tail. I will be so glad when my camera gets fixed.

Maisie has barked a few times over the past few days. She has such a cute little bark. mlove

Leigh,
Other than the slight dehydration, it sounds like she's doing great mlove In regards to the dehydration, you can try mixing her BML with apple-flavored Pedialyte for a few days to boost her electrolyte level. It will help a lot! I'm glad she's finally off her plateau for you smile Thanks for the continued updates - I really enjoy reading about your adventures with her heart

P.S. My hair is naturally curly, too, so I can just imagine how curly her tail must be at times roflmao

Maisie is absolutely fantastic. mlove

I am sick. tounge I have an appointment in a bit. I will update when I can keep my eyes open long enough to. Feeding Maisie has not been a problem. I guess that mommy instinct kicks in when my alarm goes off.

I weighed Maisie yesterday and today. MAISIE WEIGHS 38 GRAMS. dance She is now eating 1.6cc of baby bml and drinking .5cc of water, 6 times a day. Pooping and peeing normal.

I offered Maisie her first meal worm last night. The worm kept circling around past her nose. When Maisie had finally had enough, she bit it, exclamation I do not think she has enough bite power to break the exoskeleton, so I broke it in half and squeezed the guts out for her. Maisie made the yumm, yumm sound the whole time. heart She was so cute. cloud9

No more signs of Maisie's eye causing problems. I guess she just wanted mommy to worry about her for a little while.

Gotta go for now. I gotta be at the Dr. office in less than an hour.

MAISIE WEIGHS 40 GRAMS. She is 5 weeks oop today. I only have one more week of Maisie with me every minute that I am not at work. I think I am going through pre-empty-tank-top-syndrome.

The Dr. told me that he was not sure what I have, not really the flu, not really strep, but he gave me a note to be off of work until friday night. I am feeling better, just not 100% yet.

Maisie's cage should be here tomorrow. Thank you Denise for finding a 65 gallon rep for you and one for Maisie, I'll get some cash your way soon. The fabric for Maisie's cage has been washed and as soon as I get Maisie's cage put together, I am gonna start on her cage set.

Hey Suz, I have a few questions for you. How soon could/should Maisie start to use a wheel? Which one do you suggest for a 6 week oop glider? When Maisie is 6 weeks oop, can she stay in her cage from 11:00pm until 8:30am, while I am at work, or do I need to continue to put her in her portable incubator for a while longer? (I have read your page, I just need you to tell me so I'll feel ok about it all.)

Sharon, I love my new avatar, too.

Barbara, thanks for the good wishes, I am feeling better little by little. Thanks for keeping up with the posts in this thread. cool

I am glad that everyone has been so positive and helpful. When Denise had to make those hard glider mommy decisions, we were unsure how the glider community would feel about it all, thus the delayed postings here and there. Denise and I wanted it to be a positive, learning experience for everyone. I did not want her to receive an ounce of criticism. The glider community has yet again amazed me. I am so proud to be a part of this glider family. cloud9

Lynn, I miss you so. We gotta get together for lunch soon. I love ya. mlove

Hey Suz, I have another question for you, I'll have to do a little explaining first. When I feed Maisie, I hold her in my left hand. My pointer finger is under her left ear and comes around to her chest. My thumb is under her right ear and behind her neck, she lays back on my thumb. I do not know if she is sweating, my hand is sweating, or the liquid part of the baby bml is making her fur damp where my finger and thumb are under her ears. I clean up and gently brush the damp areas, just like I do under her mouth, chin and chest. The fur under Maisie's ears appears a bit "oily" after all of her fur is dry. Am I not cleaning her good enough under her ears? What could this "oily" fur be from? What else can I do to make her fur fluffy again? dunno

The only excuse that I have is that I felt really bad when I was typing on the 10th. Thank you for reading and keeping up with this thread. I was just re-reading this whole thread and read that you love joeys barking and that reminded me that Maisie was barking in her sleep tonight after her play time. heart If she had not been in my tank top, I would not have heard it. It was so sweet. heart It was one of the tiniest sounds that I believe that I have ever heard. heart

I JUST WEIGHED MAISIE, SHE WEIGHS 42 GRAMS. She is eating 1.8cc and drinking from .5cc to 1.0cc of spring water 6 times a day. Pooping and peeing normal. Maisie has had a mealie for the past two nights. Maisie did not like her first meal offered in a bowl. I will continue to work on her eating on her own.

My camera should be fixed in 3-5 days and will hopefully be back in a week.

I am feeling better every few hours. I still have a slight headache, my neck, knees and elbows are still kinda sore.

Leigh, that's wonderful news dance She is doing so good. She will get used to eating out of the bowl soon. She just doesn't want to 'give up' her Mommy just yet wink Give her time, she'll realize that Mommy won't leave just because she can eat on her own.

Awww Leigh. Maisie sounds like she is just doing great! There was never a doubt in my mind after hearing about you from Denise. I knew in my heart that Maisie was in the right hands.

I am so sorry that I haven't posted sooner. My life is crazy but just finished catching up on all the treads since my last post. Wow, her weight gain is going great and it sounds like her plateau was over very quickly! Ugh, I would've been just like you. My hubby said he is so worried when we have kids cause I just freak out at anything different with my girls.

Here is a hug2 ! You will need it when you start going through tank top withdraws! My heart is going to ache for you when she "grows up". At least you have yourself one heck of a bra baby! clap

Three Cheers for Leigh! The super awesome mommy!

MAISIE IS SO SPOILED

When we lay down to go to sleep, Maisie takes just a few seconds to wiggle into a comfy spot with her back to my chest and her tummy and feet toward my tank top. THEN, she makes this tiny, quiet, almost bark, kinda sounds like "eeh, eeh". Then, I rub her tummy till I fall asleep. cloud9

I put 3 peas, cut in half, 3 kernels of corn, cut in half, 2 carrot cubes, cut into 6 pieces and 1 green bean cut into 3 parts into Maisie's kitchen last night. This morning, I found 2 pea halves, no signs of the corn, 2 halves of carrot chunks and one of the green bean pieces. clown

"HEY SUZ, I THOUGHT YOU SAID THAT JOEYS DO NOT WANT ANY PART OF VEGGIES TILL THEY ARE AROUND 12 WEEKS OLD?" clap Guess this baby of mine is gonna mess with all of us and all of the previous findings. dunno

Hi Lynn, yes Maisie and I will be at the USGN Jamboree. clown

I know that I have not updated in SEVERAL days, so here goes... read

Maisie weighs 50 grams and has since yesterday. She is staying in her own cage from 9:00pm until 9:00am every night and then in my tank top the other 12 hours. She pops her sweet face out of her pouch every morning when I go in and start talking to her. She is eating regular BML and drinking water out of a bowl and out of her water bottle. The only thing that I am hand feeding her is aliens and mealies. cloud9

Two days ago, I received a call from a GREAT friend of mine. I was WAY to asleep to talk to her. I called her back yesterday morning after I got off work and out of the gym. The first thing she asked was, "How is Maisie?" I told her. Then she tells me that she had taken in 5 rescues the night before, Mom, Dad and 3 joeys, under 4 months and to come and pick up a friend for Maisie. I told her that I wanted one of the youngest after I got the go ahead from Denise and Scott and to give me 24 hours. I sent this HUGE text to Denise. No text or call back. I called Sharon to get Denise's e-mail address at work, then sent her a hurry up and contact me e-mail. About 5 minutes later, Denise calls. I ask her if she got my text or e-mail. No. I tell her about the phone call. Denise says go for it, a female would be easier, no snip, snip and healing and all that. I call Scott tell him about this female, he says go for it. I call my friend back, I am on my way in a bit and I want a female. About 5 minutes later I get a call back, we have a slight problem, all of the joeys are males. I make another phone call, the snip, snip will be taken care of and I am on my way to pick up Maisie's friend. I did not call Denise and Scott, all was taken care of, no need to call. On the way, I start to think about names for this young man. Race, I am racing to get him, no does not sound great with Maisie. What do you take to a race? In my house, it would be a Monte Carlo, Scott has an '86, jiggidy, jiggidy, and I have an '06, Nascar edition, varoom, varoom. Monte sounds good with Maisie. I was in my Monte Carlo when I found out about him. BUT, Maisie's brother Monty is giving Denise a hard time right now, I can't name him Monte. I see an Interstate sign to Nashville, I then think, Murfreesboro, Murphy, Murphy and Maisie, but I like Monte better, I see a white Monte Carlo going the other direction, I can't name him Monte. Then I see a mile marker, Miles, Miles and Maisie, but I like Monte better, I see a red Monte Carol going the other direction, I can't name him Monte. I pass a Mayflower truck, I pass a car with Montgomery county tags, Montgomery, I start to think about names that end in sie, or ie, or y, Abbie, already got one, Blazie, too girlish, Crazy, No, Daisie, girlish, E, F, G, I pass another Montgomery county car tag. Could I possibly name him Monte? I try to think about something else. I am almost there, only two more turns before I turn into her drive way. I see a bright yellow Monte Carlo going the other direction. Monte and Maisie. How in the world am I gonna convince Denise that Monte is a good name with her Monty being such a pistol right now? dunno

I go into my friend's house. She says to get the two white bellies out and go to the bathroom. I do. I hand one to my friend to give each of them just a moment with me. The first is on my left arm, I am petting him with my right hand, he is so calm and so sweet, I think I have my mind made up. I ask for the other one, I hold him in my right hand, he goes straight up my sweatshirt sleve and he stops right in front of my arm pit, one of Maisie's favorite spots and he STAYS there. The one on my left arm went up to my shoulder, around the back of my neck and was right under my right ear, I hold the neck of my sweatshirt out for him to go to a warm, dark place, he does not. His brother is still in the same spot. My friend looks at me, I tell her I want the one in my sweatshirt, she takes the other and puts him back in the cage with his family. I put "Monte", (is that what you are gonna call him, I hear the voices in my head say), in a pouch and in my tank top where Maisie was. I go to check on the other brother. He is hanging on the front of his cage, I start to rub his tummy, mine usually go the other direction, he stayed, little nose poked through the bars, I start to pet his tail, mine usually go the other direction, he stays with this "Take me, too" look on his sweet face. I almost cry. I tell him that I promised that one more would be all. He looks the other direction. I walk out of the room. That was the second hardest things I have walked away from since gliders have owned me. The first was leaving Maisie in her portable incubator the first night. "GOD, please take care of 'Monte's' brother, let him go to a home that is gonna love and spoil him just as much as I am gonna love and spoil 'Monte'". need_hug

I get home and tell Scott all about my trip and then about his name. Scott inerupts me, "His name?" I knew he would ba a bit aggrivated that I told him I was getting a female and he is a male. Scott says, "I have been thinking about names for Maisie's friend all day and the only thought that I had was, if she got a male, Monte would be a great name and Monte sounds great with Maisie, Monte and Maisie. I could not come up with one female name." I am standing there with my chin on the floor. I tell him about all of my Monte thoughts and it is a done deal. Maisie's new friend's name is Monte. Now, I have to call Denise and talk her into it...Denise answered the phone, asks how they are, I inform. Then, I tell her that I have thought of a name. I ask if she is sitting down, yes. I tell her the whole story...She is laughing her fool head off, "That is a fantastic name" she said. jump

I weighed Monte this morning, he weighs 74 grams. mlove

For those of you that do not really know me...I live my life BELIEVING that "THOUGHT IS CREATIVE", "BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR", and, "WHEN GOD SPEAKS, EVEN IF YOU ARE SCREAMING AND HE IS WHISPERING, YOU BETTER LISTEN". My life is as normal as everyone else's, except when GOD puts me on a path, it is as fast as my Monte Carlo will go.

Oh yea, by the way, I did not pass one Cop, Deputy Sheriff or State Trooper on my way there or back. angel

Leigh, congratulations on your new baby! Monte is a cute name and I'm glad Denise thought it was a good name, too, lol!
What a story....it's amazing what can happen in just a few days. You'll need to give us updates on Maisie AND Monte!
And of course pics!
I'll have to admit, the way you expressed what happened before you left your friend's house had me in tears. I hope the little sweetheart finds a great home.

Maisie weighs 60 grams. Monte weighs 76 grams. Monte was neutered this weekend and is doing fantastic. He has not had one issue since the neuter. THANK YOU to all that were involved with Monte's neuter.

I separated Monte from Maisie at midnight before his neuter. They stayed on the sides of their cages looking at each other most of the night. I put them together for the drive to the vet and they were happy. After we left the vet, Maisie came out of my tank top a zillion times. I kept telling her that we would go pick Monte up as soon as we could. I weighed Maisie when we got back from the vet, Maisie had lost 6 grams. I about freaked out. I gave her all of the mealies that she would eat (she gained all 6 grams back by the next morning). . . I was driving to the vet to pick up Monte, she came out again, so I held her in my hand, with her head out of her pouch, I talked to her a little and continued to drive. A few moments later, I looked at her and she was finally asleep. I showed her to everyone in the car and we all agreed that Maisie is one of the most spoiled gliders that there has ever been. Where was our cameras then? LOL. As soon as the vet teck brought Monte out, I took him out of his hospital cage and put them back together. After a few hours, they finally settled down and I had two happy gliders again.
