When do joeys go out on their own? #40925

I'm asking to see when the correct age is for joeys to be crawling about on their own. One of my new joeys seems extra curious, and I don't want her to get hurt if it's too early.

Thanks to anyone and everyone in advance!

Sorry, I don't have any experience with joeys, but hopefully someone who does will be along soon to answer your question.

Ours seemed ready to defy mom and dad and at least try at around 3-4 weeks OOP. If mom and dad aren't ready for them to, they'll usually go and corral them back into the pouch. I kept my pouches at floor level in the cage until I was sure there weren't going to be any falls that could hurt a joey. Karin's Cabana playhouses were great for new joeys, and dad would build a door out of the blankies to keep the little ones in. It provided a floor level nest, with a small shelf so the babies didn't just roll out, either. Hope this helps.

Once your babies started going out on thier own did they ever seem to get lost? This morning I found mom and dad in one pouch with the baby girl and the baby boy was sleeping alone in another pouch. He seemed fine and wasn't cold. I simply picked him up and slid him into the right pouch...Mom started talking to him and he as been in there all day with no other problems. How often do they need to nurse? And also, How long can I keep them away from mom while I am bonding to them? They are 28 days opp.

usually by a month oop they have reduced the frequency of feeding but right now I wouldn't keep them away from mom for more than a couple hours at a time. Also they still don't have the ability to regulate their own body temp yet so besure they stay warm while they are out. (Sorry reply came so late, didn't see it til just now).

Thanks, everyone. They seem to be doing really well. They can sure hang on really tight to mom! Wow! ...and with her doing acrobats and all!

Thanks again for the information!
