I will stop this before it gets out of hand its a research project and with research you gather data and at the same time you educate yourself as well as others (at least those that are willing to learn).

Please read I never said I was using a vivarium, the fact that you tried bathing your gliders does not mean that they do not like water (think of Dogs), next time you are under a tree after it has rained grab a branch and tug it a little you will be wet, theorectically that is what will happen to a glider going from tree to tree. As far as the bacteria that you say that they are exposed to, do you have proof has their been something written about it, If so please post it as a different topic so we can all read it.


Please if you have any information on glider and their habitat please post it.

My suggestions for a natural like cage set up:
- artificial vines (with out wire)
- wooden log bird house (they look like a log, but have been hollowed out to allow birds to nest inside)
- lots of branches
- an artificial tree (less the potting material, maybe plastered into a pot for stability and ease of cleaning <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/nixweiss.gif" alt="" />)

Mimicking their natural environment will not only be, in my opinion, safer, it will also be much cheaper.

Although I'm not a mod.... enough already! We each are passionate about our suggies and each of us wants what's best for them.

Here is one reason I find this to be a valuable thread. There is a "rescue" in our area that, in addition to other animals, has gliders. They don't handle them at all and their environment is boring and small. They have built a "natural" environment for some of the wild cats they have... Since their goal is not to "rehab or rehome" these gliders, I'd love for them to do something like this. It would be a much better environment for those gliders.

After seeing how our gliders reacted when I put a tree branch with leaves into their cage, I can imagine how they would love a more "natural" environment. Even though I would never set up a totally natural environment for our suggies, I can get good ideas from this thread and if nothing else, it helps me to think of new possibilities.

I'm not trying to be stupid, I did see the post about the hallowed out log that had mealies, but what are they going to use for toys? So they don't get bored? Maybe some vines for swinging? This is a cool idea though..

Yes there will be vines and such but NO toys remember toys in the wild so we would like to see what they do for fun.

we currently have 2 options. one is 4ft wide x 2ft deep x 4ft tall.

The other is 5ft wide x 2ft deep x 6ft tall basically I am looking to see which set-up would be easier to clean. I will be making the tray so I need to know the size soon. The one thing I am gong to love is the flush factor that the misting will have.

I believe that it will keep the smell as well as the labor of cleaning down.

By the way for everyone that is reading this is Ghost Wood safe I've look but cant find it anywhere. It's a wood that we use in most vivariums since it can tolerate high moisture levels and rather than getting moldy it will grow moss as well.

10ft wide x 5ft deep x 6ft tall divided into 2 5 foot compartment accessed via logs whole the center bored out...

So are you gonna post pics of what you have going so far? Id like to see your project as it developes. Also how many gliders do you have and how have you been keeping them? You also said that there will be no toys in therir enviornment b/c there are none in the wild but you must also remember yours are not in the wild they are in a simulated enviornment...they dont have acers to roam and glide and jump as they please..so maybe there is a more natural toy out there? Maybey you could use some cut brantches to make neat little climby jumgle gyms...oh erm in a "natural" way i mean.

Yes there will be more than enough stuff for them to play on such as vines and stuff, if it doesnt grow naturally they will not have access to it, what we can wait to see is the gliders glider 8-10 ft that should be a site, and to catch it on video to boot.

Also we will be moving in 2 moms with joeys IP so that when the joeys are OOP they would have nver been exposed to a cage or toys for that matter. I am think of placing a total of 5 gliders in at the moment 2 boys and 3 girls. we were going to put 1 boy to 3 girl but I would like to see how the boys would act in a larger environment.

Sure when its done I'll let you and everyone else see we are curently figuring out live video stream for our website.

We have a coach house on our property were I keep all of my animals at. so it'll be on the second floor. The best thing about it is that it will have a drain on the bottom of the cage floor so when its getting misted all the water will just go down the drain.
