Popeye, my almost 7 yr old intact male glider has a swollen cloaca. I took him out to give him a traet and noticed he looked a little swollen. He is eating ok, and drinking fine also. He was a glider that I had taken in from someone last year that did not want him anymore. He had a horrible diet, lots of corn, lori nectar, and some fruits. I felt sorry for him and welcomed him in. He is on the Suncoast now. I thought he may be constipated and he can poop fine. I felt 2 small pea lumps on each side of the cloaca? I'm [censored] out. I have called the vet, and can not be seen till in the AM Tues. He said don't worry it may be swollen scent glands? I never have heard of this? He said the ER vet does not see exotics. Any idea's? I woulod get a pick up, but mu USB cord is not working for some reason right now.

It could be his scent glands. Has he pooped or peed? Just watch that he doesn't start to groom it or start licking or chewing it. He should be OK until tomorrow just watch him. Make sure he is going to the bathroom. Is he hissing or makeing any noise?

Occasionally he would make a mild hissy noise pooping or peeing, but would just take off and go play. He is going to the bathroom alright, my shirt is evidence..haha..Can they swell up like that? I mean it's not grossly swollen but I could tell a diffrence, they almost feel like small cper size lumps, exactly side by side under the skin. I am keeping a close on him to make sure he don't start SMing. I have never heard or seen anything like this? I feel a little relieved now.

You might try and giving him some applejuice or Glideraid. That will loosen his stools some. And may make it easier for him to go to the bathroom without the hiss..

We will be waiting to see what the vet says in the morning. If you need us in the meantime we will be here.

Just know that when you give the Glideraid he may not eat as much unless you give it to him earlier than when you feed him.

Ok, I have started reading on Anal glands...no, I did not know they them..I am getting more worried the more I read. I think this is his issue, hopefully my vet is going to take me more seriously, since he sounded like this was not that BIG of a deal. shakehead

Cindy, see if you can talk to Jen/Xfilefan. She has a glider who has recurrent problems with his anal glands. I think it's her Riker, who is also an SM glider. From what I recall, he has to go on antibiotics routinely to keep them from becoming inflamed, and I think he's had some sort of surgical procedure done on them as well. This doesn't mean yours will go through that. I'm just telling you so you know the extent of her experience with this.

Jen is always willing to talk to anyone, day or night if a glider is in need. I have called her from the e-vet at midnight myself and she was great, talking me and the vet (who was not familiar with gliders either) through what needed to be done. I'll PM you her phone number.

Sundra, thanks. hug2 She PMed just before I left for work, and I just gave her details to take to the vet with her tomorrow, based on Chronos' experiences. Hopefully we'll know something soon.

THANKS Peeperkeeper, I did speak with her about Popeye, vet called my this morning to tell me they "OVERBOOKED" and need to reschedule me till tommorrow at 5:10pm UGHHHHHHH tant I am nervous, I did print out your email Jen to take it with me, I did tell them I want the fecal and a urinalisis (sp)? So another day I must wait. But at least they scheduled me with someone who actually works with gliders, and not the guy who thought this was "NO BIG DEAL!" He is still acting ok, and eating, so i'm just keeping a watchfull eye on him, Poor little guy. Thank you for your support, I will keep you posted on Popeye's condition. upset

Looking forward to an update. I may not be able to get on before work, but will then. Or you can call if you really need something before then-just need some sleep before my shift.

Thanks Jen your sweet, I appreciate the detail you went into the message you sent so I can bring it in with us tommorrow! hug2 I will keep you posted, I noticed tonite his "manhood" has been hanging out a little bit, The tip, Is that "G" rated? lol, I did add some KY to keep it moist. So I am getting a bit more concerned for popeye, also his poop looked a little softer then normal, but not runny. I have tried my best to improve his quality of life since he has been with me, I hope this is something not to serious, I will be devastated! upset I'll keep you posted on Popeye tommorrow!

Ok, here's popeye's update. I just got home. We drove an hour to the vet, waited almost an hour before being seen, and then the vet tech came in, and tried to weigh him, and she tried to grab the skin on the back of his neck like a kitten! He freaked, she dropped him! Finally Dr. Wenner came in, ( our first time meeting) and I asked him to ter weigh his pouch and I would put him back in it to weigh him, Ok, simple thing completed,GRRR. He is 96 grams! He put him on the table and was trying to lift his tail to look at the swollen anal glands like he was afraind of being bit. Ok, I ask how long have you been seeing Sugar gliders? By this time i am getting irratated, I have my poor popeye, my 6 yr old and my 14 month old with me, and they act like they don't want to touch him!?! He says for the past 4 yrs, but I am skeptical. He says he want's to "express" the glands wich he did with a gentle touch and me hounding over his shoulder. He was not at all concerned with your message Jen! But I verbally stated things of concern to make sure he understood me.

He ran a fecal, and it was negative he said. I was pee'd on twice so we coldn't do a urine culture. He looked the "discharge" from the glands, and he looked at it under the microscope. He came back and said it had some pus in it and it was mildly infected. So he said even if he has a UTI the Baytril he gave me will kill it. I asked what caused this and he said they just became plugged up, and we'll have to see if this is reaccuring?!

Soo, I feel a little better, but a little more confused about the reason this happened and what will happen if it comes back. Jen any advice? Thanks!

If it does come back, he'll need treated again. I'd feel better if he'd given you at least 14 days of meds...if there's extra, I'd go ahead for that time if you can-even a UTI is iffy at 10 days as to whether the meds will get it gone. Hopefully this will take care of it. If not, and you have to go back to the same one, you might need to be really not too nice (to put it nicely) to get what he needs.

If it recurs, either meds weren't long enough, or there's abscess (which I hope there isn't), to give the meds a chance to get in there for long enough is why I recommended 3 weeks-it's just not an easy area. Go with what he gave you, and see how he does-we can go from there if we need to. hug2

Don't you just 'love' vets who act like it's their $$ you're spending, and not yours? shakehead

I don't really know much on this topic but I wanted to wish you and Popeye the best of luck in curing whatever is wrong with him, hopefully it is nothing too serious.

Thanks Katrina, I hope so too! Well I guess I am in luck then Jen, the vet tech who was an Intern said do you think this will be anough? when she gave me the Baytril, I thought to my self, SELF, is she asking you?! LOL, and she said hold on, and came back with another CC of Baytril, and said just in case! SO VOILA! I have enough for your reccomended period! You say 3 weeks correct? He does not like it, is there any way I can mix it with something? Is there an easier way then forcing him to take orally? I dunno, that's why I am asking he starts shaking his head real fast and I seen some come out of his mouth I just want to make sure he's getting enough to heal himself. THANKS!

When my girls were on antibiotics, I would put the medicine in the syringe, then suck up a tiny bit of baby juice (near the baby food) and shake. It seemed to help somewhat with the nasty taste.
