I was interested in purchasing some Kladders from the pet store. From the label, they appear to be dyed wood, but I read that dyed wood shouldn't be used w/ gliders. Do you know the truth behind this?

I cant speak for everyone but I myself have bought the colored wood toys, I have a ladder and a sqing and the square toys. What I did was when I brought them home I washed them in a warm mild soap bucket of water, rinsed well and than washed them again, rinsed well and then I let them sit over night in a bucket of cold water. The next morning I checked to see if any more of the color was going to come off and it didnt and it hasnt lost anymore of its color since then, even with all the washings. I'm sure others will be along soon to give their opinions and advice. I have had mine since the beginning and we are almost at our one year mark together.

I will definately follow the procedure in which you did when/if I buy these types of toys. Thx. And...this is semi , but I figured I'd throw this one at ya! What kinds of toys did you have in the cage when you brought your first glider home? So far I have tons of links with some toys in the middle connecting some of them. I have them ready to be put horizontally and vertically in the cage. I'd prefer more variety, though. I'm at the mainland now so I'm bombarding these kinds of questions since my next opportunity would be at the cost of a 2 hour drive to Miami when home. ( pouches and sleeping items are already taken care of and boy is she spoiled already!)

personally, i would not use any wood toys, dyed or otherwise. too difficult to keep clean, and i would be worried about bacteria from pee and poop.

I've so far only bought plastic links and baby toys - hopefully these don't have any faults, as I've steered clear from small parts and whatnot. BTW, I PMed you about a cage.

I had a wooden box that my sugar glider would sleep in. He'd pee and poop on it alot. It looked gross, it smelled, and I was worried he'd get sick from it. It's a good thing not to buy them cause it might help keep the bad smells down in your home. I have a hard enough time with my cat making my room smell. She poops too much.

I agree, again. When I was in Miami at a bird aviary, they just so happened to have gliders. There were about 6 of them living in a small cage, probably 12 inches deep by 24 inches wide...all cuddled in a small wooden nesting box. It was quite foul smelling if I do say so myself. It was bad enough to see them in there like that, let alone have to smell that. I can't imagine how they feel living in it. You guys have helped me to develop a broader view on wooden toys.

Well, I hate to be the one to disagree with the many who think that the wood would create a problem... You see, that is what I do, I work with wood for a living, and if it is cared for and washed properly and consistantly, like anything else, you will not have a problem with it. Not to mention it is also good to have in the gliders cage along with branches (which are also wood manzita or otherwise)for them to chew on to help keep their teeth clean. If you buy wooden toys all you have to do is to make sure they get a good scrubbing with warm mild soap water and a real good rinse and they should be just fine along with all the plastic toys and material that the gliders also pee and poop on that needs cleaning. As for the nest boxes, what needs to be done with them, is they need to be coated when first bought. You sand them down real good and than make sure all the dust and dirt is off of it than you coat it with shellac or tung oil (both ok for gliders) you let the first coat dry for 24 hours and than take 1500 grit sandpaper and lightly sand over the entire box inside and out again and apply another coat or shellac or tung oil, and continue to do this for 3 to 5 coats. once well coated it is very easy to keep clean and the coating prevents the urine or marking from absurbing into the box. If you dont feel you have the time to put into coating your box that much you can always order one from me and even have it personalized!! However, along with everything else that is purchased for your babies, after a certain amount of time it is of course time to throw out the old and replace with new. You also have to be certain that the types of wood you use are safe for your gliders, but smelly or problematic I would have to disagree as long as it is maintained accordingly!!

That's good to know. I didn't think it would have been good to coat it. But I stand corrected. Thank you. I may try that one day.

Oh boy! I'm in for it bad, now! I went to see your nest boxes and have fallen in love. How do you keep them clean? How beautiful...I might be tempted to order shortly.

I also use wood toys in my cage and have never had a problem. We let them soak in hot water with antibacterial dishsoap and vinegar and then scrub them down. Then we let them dry out in the sun. we never have problem with odor or anything else. We also use the dyed wood toys as if they are safe for parrots then chances are they are safe for sugar gliders. Parrots are very touchy and can't have many things so their toys are made specifically for them. We sell the kladders and have used them in our cages for well over 5 years now without a problem. They do fade over a period of years, but our gliders love them and we have never had any problem with them. Peggy I love those nestboxes!! Your stuff is awesome!!

Ive used wood toys for 4 years now... (I dont use wooden nestboxes... heck I dont use any nestboxes at all.... ) I started off checking into wooden beaded bird toys...( and if anyone knows me on here at all, knows that safety is one of my BIG things...lol..Im quite obsessive sometimes I think maybe when it comes to my little ones...lol. ) I called/or contact companys that make wooden bird toys... Id call to make sure that the bird toy/s I was thinking about purchasing were dyed with nontoxic food coloring (which the majority are). After awhile I made some of my own wooden things for my 'kids'... Id just soak the wood in food-coloring/water... then go through a hot water cleaning, then cold water rinsing. Since these things are ' toys' that hang... I didnt worry as much about them collecting wastes as much... when its time to clean them... I just scrub em down and air dry them. (whatever bird toys/wood items I buy or make... I try to be sure that their sealed properly/colored properly/& the wood is non- toxic...etc. )

Nope...horrible, I tell ya! Just horrible! Just kidding!
Peggy's nest boxes are WONDERFUL...they are very well crafted. I don't use them for my suggies, but I use them with my flying squirrels...and my flyers hardly even come out to say hello anymore. ...The nest boxes must be very comfortable for them.
P.S. If you click on the link in my siggy for my flyers (King and Kya) you can see some pictures of them in their nest box.

I bought a dyed wood ladder for my little man and lately i have noticed him chewing on it. Should i worry about this? He doesnt seem to be sick or affected in anyway.
Sorry if it was kind of off topic there...

We bought some small wood from walmart (safe non treated), to make our own toys, and we dyed them....... but with KOOLAID, they love it, they will sit there and sniff it all night long! and if they chew on it, its ok, theres nothing in koolaid i need to worry about. ( i dont add sugar) maybe you could try that too?

It's ok if they chew on it. THat's what they do with tree branches so it will be fine.
