It has been SO long since I was on here, but wanted to share some news with a community I know will understand and perhaps offer some kind suggestions...

We said goodbye to one of our two gliders - Dave - yesterday. He was just shy of his TENTH birthday. He had been dealing with some minor constipation off and on for several weeks, and we had it well managed, but a couple days ago he took a turn and an x-ray yesterday showed an abdominal mass, likely cancer, pressing on his colon. So we made the very hard decision to euthanize. He lived a very good and long life so I am at peace with the decision.

He leaves behind his lifelong cage mate and half brother - Tim - who will turn TEN on Sept. 3! He's doing very well so far, was a little skiddish with me this morning but I've been giving him extra attention and he seems like his normal self otherwise - ate fine last night, etc.

I know it may be difficult for some to understand, but we've decided these two would be our only gliders, and I'm hopeful Tim will do fine on his own. The person I got them from noted she had a glider who was pretty aloof (this describes Tim exactly - Dave was by far the more outgoing of the two) but became much more interactive and affectionate after its cage mate passed.

So short of getting Tim a new buddy, I welcome any suggestions and advice to keep Tim happy and sociable, and any nuanced problems to watch for - outside the obvious of depressed behaviour, not eating well, etc. If he shows any signs of decline, I'll be looking at only the best re-homing options for ensuring he can live out his remaining days enriched and fulfilled in experienced hands.

Thanks so much all!

Give him lots of extra attention.

I run a rescue and sanctuary in Wisconsin and I will tell you this rehoming older gliders is very hard on them. Some of them pass soon after. As long as he is happy I would keep him.

Apologies if I’m not posting this in the right place. I wasn’t sure where it would fit…

Hi everyone. I wanted to share an update that today we said goodbye to our Tim who turned 12(!!)in September.

As you may note from my last post we said goodbye to his cage mate and half brother Dave back in 2020. Since then, until fairly recently Tim thrived! He became very outgoing and almost seemed happier in a way. Part of me wondered if maybe he wasn’t a bit bullied by his larger half brother… 😜

We noticed a very fast decline in energy and mobility just over the past month and after consulting with a vet and doing some palliative care, decided his quality of life had simply withered and he didn’t deserve to be strung along.

I’m of course sad, but also extremely proud to have cared for two gliders that lived apparently happy and fulfilled lives - both for over a decade! This community was a huge reason I was able to gain the perspectives and knowledge to be a great glider owner, so THANK YOU!

With that sad news, I also wanted to bring some positivity. I have accumulated a fair amount of things over the years that I’d like to donate to someone, or a rescue.

Some of the things include:
sealed bag of critter love complete
pouches and cage sets
washable cage pan liners
custom made travel cage
custom made carrying purse
bonding bag
“kitchen” and bowls
a few plastic toys
ceramic warming lamp (for external use)
spare parts for “raptor” style wheel - I think the company that made them was called Atticworx - I have parts for the cage side mount or floor mount
etc.

I don’t want anything for any of it except the cost of shipping if needed. I’m located in Halifax, Nova Scotia.

If you’re interested or know anyone I should reach out to let me know!

I’ll try and cross post this in the right channel(s) and see if anyone on these forums is in my area.

I would gladly pay the shipping to ship it to Wisconsin for my rescue gliders. We try to send gently used cage stuff home with all the rescues.
My area code is 53589, let me know what the shipping would be.

Hi! I’m so sorry I promised it to someone in Ontario back on Christmas eve.
I’m not on Facebook so was only able to post here and on Reddit/Kijiji.

Thanks for everything you do for the rescues and glider owner community!! <3
