Just little me so far? My gliders and I have just moved in here to our new house in the Ranch in Lusby, Calvert County, MD (they tell me that makes me a Lusbian ). I know there's a couple of other glider owners down here; the vet told me. It would be good to know who else is around, because we could really help eachother out.

Yay for us Maryland folks!
I own two glider's myself since about a month ago.. Jade is an almost 6 mo glider and Joey is almost 7 mos.
I live in Forestville, right by the good ole district(no comments please)I am fairly a new glider owner but not a new enthusiast!

Jade and Joey are a breeding capable pair but waiting on till she matures enough and I get a USDA license to worry about that sorta stuff. I am working on a Glider Gallery for them so stay tuned!

and I know of a friend in Baltimore that wants to give his furbutt a goodhome.

I'm in Kensington, Maryland, on the top side of the DC metro area. I haven't found a local vet with any expertise with sugar gliders. Fortunately, I haven't had any emergencies.

the most local it gets that I have found is Annapolis.. there is a great vet in that area that has a lot of Glider Knowledge. I know where Kensington is.. I am on the southeastern side of the DC line right outside in Maryland.. may be moving up to Greenbelt soon though..

Just saying hi.. I havnt been on here in a while. I am in Reisterstown/Owings Mills MD. I've been a glider owner for about 6 years now.. and I've been breeding for about 5 of those years. I now have four pairs my first pair and I am looking for joeys out of my 2nd pair I just paired up. And once my joey is old enough he will be going with a young joey female. I just rescued a pair as well.. but I don't think they will be breeders do to health but we will see how they come along. Take care and happy gliding

I'm in Frederick Maryland. Seems to me that everyones smart and either moved away from or stayed away from DetrickI plan on getting two gliders soon. Luckily there are a lot of vets around here, but not necessarily experience with gliders, apparently theres a vet in Gaithersburg that has seen gliders before, it was in the Critters USA annual vet directory. Unfortunately I left the mag. at work, most likely has been promptly stolen or thrown away, and didn't think to write the number down.

So you guys, who is the best glider vet that is closest to Baltimore? My g-daughter just moved there and took her gliders with her. Although they have never been sick, you just never know and it's good to have a vet lined up just in case!

Whew, has a lot happened since I last said hi to everyone.

I now have three pairs and a single male, I have a cinny girl who isn't of breeding age but is with her future hubby. The single male is a beautiful buttercream. My other two pairs are gray... But I can say I'm bringing more color to Maryland with a WFB that should be here in about 8-10weeks. I'm so excited!! I don't know if I plan on selling his joeys or just keeping them. But we will see. He will have a girlfriend though, my one gray pair is having twins and I know one is a girl for sure I have to wait until the other one pops her [censored] out

If anyone would like to get together, or come and visit.. just send me a PM! I love showing my kids off to glider lovers

My husband (Oldcolt58) lived in Glen Burnie, MD for many years and he took his gliders to Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital. Here is the link: http://www.gavh.com/ He was happy with the staff there. My husband moved to WI to be with me, though. If you have any questions, let me know and I will ask him.

Hey Meg! My granddaughter is in Baltimore too. She has been there for about a year and a half. She has two gliders. I just sent her a dozen cups of mighty mealies from Grubco. A dozen cups is the minimum you can order. This is way too many for 2 gliders, so if you would like to have some of them, pm me and I will tell you how to contact her. No charge, we just don't want to see any of them go to waste!

Hi everyone. This is Matt, I live in Columbia Maryland with my partner & 2 new gliders. I have been researching and wanting a glider for several years, but after losing my ferret friend I kinda gave up on all pets. It will be my 3 year anniversery in October, we lost him to cancer. But after giving it a lot of thought, I decided to get them. Anyway, I just got 2 gliders today, they are settling in nicely.

I am looking forward to chatting with everyone here and learning as much as I can about them (I have already been doing as much research as possible the last several years before I got them)

Hi, thanks for the welcome. I'm enjoying my new buddies, but can only watch from a distance since the "bad boy" won't let me anywhere near the cage. But it is only day #1, I do think that they are progressing well since they have not even been here for 24 hours yet.

I just need some names?, 1 boy & 1 girl I think???

About me: I was born in Baltimore City in the 70's, moved to Glen Burnie and stayed there until 98 and then moved to Columbia. Where I currently live now with my partner, but would love to move to New Mexico some day.

I am also a vegan, are there any other vegans here?

It would be nice if all of the interested Maryland members held a glider event sometime, I used to do that with my ferrets many years ago.

My partner wants to name them Fred & Ethel (from the "I love Lucy" show), but I am not too keen on that.............they are not warming up too quickly, especially the male. He does not want anyone near him, the female seems to be a little more relaxed. But when he starts crabbin, she follows.

Oh well, it takes time.

Thanks. Matt

I'm in Dundalk...they advertise glider experience and they are licensed and insured and all that. I'm not going to have them take them out, just clean out the bowls and feed. I don't want to stress the gliders by some stranger taking them out. They'll bite if you don't smell familiar. I'm meeting the woman tomorrow night to go over instructions and stuff so I can check her out.

Kool, I'm in Essex! smile

If they have experience, then I would think they are fine, just make sure you feel comfortable with her, maybe introduce Loki and Bomber ahead of time.

Let me know how it goes, might have to give them a call when I go on vacation smile

I met with the woman Thursday and she came to feed them Saturday night. I feed the Suncoast diet and Sat. was a yogurt night so I had instructed her to give a heaping tablespoon of the yogurt. When we came back home I saw that she had put the rest of the container back in the fridge and when I looked in I saw that she had just scooped right out of the container without mixing it first! What she gave them must have been mostly just that yucky clear layer you get on top of the yogurt. Who does that? confused Plus she kept my keys!

That's cool that you are so close...maybe we can trade info and use each other when we're in a bind. Have you found any local exotic pet stores with glider stuff?

Oh and hello Betty! I have some family around Cumberland and have been there many times.

Ewwww. those poor babies! they must have thought their slave went insane, lol. Why would she keep your keys?? did you call and ask for them back?

Be glad to exchange info, nice to know someone else with gliders is nearby smile I havenot found any petstores with glider things, petsmart has a little leapord print pouch, and a pellet food for them, but thats it. I took my Scooter to petco, and the girl didnt even know what he was!, then someone else came over and went to ask the manager if they were ever gonna sell gliders, thankfully the manager said "No, they are too much work"

WELCOME TO GC BETTY!!!! My aunt used to live in Cumberland smile

Yeah, that would be horrible for gliders if PetSmart or Petco started selling them. Today's Pet in Annapolis Mall sells them as well as a petstore in Abingdon where I used to live. The poor things are constantly poked, prodded, and manhandled at a time when they should be sleeping! frown I will pm you my info.

Kerri, I've been to that Today's Pet (in Annapolis mall) as well as the one in Columbia mall. The stores are small, loud and bright, and it really sickened me to see gliders in there frown I went in looking for bird toys (this was before I had gliders and before I moved back to IN). I ended up not buying anything from them as I didn't want to support a place that operates like that frown

Oh, wow i didnt know they sell gliders, i dont even bother going into petstores in the mall(s), they make me sick to walk by them, just to imagine the isolated, unsanitary, and tiny cages those poor animals have to indure makes my stomach turn upside-down and inside-out. cry

I didn't even know that petstores in maryland had gliders I gotta check them out. Biggest problem i have is that its nothing you can tell most pet stores when it comes to care. Im gonna try but thats just the petstore environment. I guess gliders is getting really populart to be in a mall petstore. Alot of future rescues I see coming in 5 years

i live in Pasadena [[no gliders currently; but working on getting 1 again]]. Precious Pet Cottage sells them too. i haven't seen any gliders in there, but i go in from time to time to check them out, see if they have any and if they do to make sure that the gliders are ok. i've heard of some bad stories of ppl getting pets from them and the pet not being healthy and getting sick and dying and what not.. personally i don't think i'd ever get a glider from a pet store, i'd rather go to a breeder who is more knowledgeable, then a pet store would be.

Holly, that's the place in Millersville off Veteran's Hwy? I went in there a couple times, they had kittens in a teeny bird cage and other snimals that weren't housed correctly frown My sis in law bought a puppy from there (after all my begging and pleading with her not too), and it ended up really sick and passed before she even was 4 months old of a liver shunt. PPC wouldn't even offer a partial credit and she'd not even had the puppy a month. They currently are in litigation to at least try and get some of the vet fees covered frown I lived in Sun Valley, so not too far from Pasadena the last time we were there...

I've been back in Indiana almost 2 years, but I still warn as many ppl as I can in the area about that place. It really does make you wonder, but, there are still a lot of people who don't know about animals that come from mill type situations and the plight they face on a daily basis, sad but true.. It's all about the money and people who don't want to wait for anything, a pet included frown

I bought my 2 gliders from Today's Pet in Columbia Mall in September, that place is like [censored]................hot, cramped, too many pets & people in there. I work for the mall owners and pass by the store several times per week, sometimes stop in to take a look around. On a few ocassions I saw the 2 gliders in a very small cage (about 15" square), one bright flourescent light above the cage and some ivy thrown in for cover. The only food that I ever witnessed in the cage was green grapes & nectar, never anything more. I felt that I just had to get them, so one rainy Sunday afternoon it happened.

When I asked to get them, they send over some "kid" that had no clue as to what he was doing. He proceeds to try and capture them using two small cardboard boxes and corner them, not the way to go! The smaller one went in after about 15 minutes, the larger male put up a fight for over 15 minutes. At the end of all of this, all I wanted to do was get out of there and take them home. The store staff are poorly trained and rather snotty when it comes to questioning their operations, while the ordeal was going on about 10 people were standing a foot away watching. I politely asked them to move aside while the clerk gets them together for me, no one budged so I said get the [censored] out of the way and stop stressing them out!!!

The gliders are coming along nicely now, they still have a ways to go but they are my babies. They are getting some treats tonight for being good, I would never recommending pet store pets but this was like a rescue to me. The gliders needed someone that would stand up for them and give them a better home with lots of love.

Hope they don't get anymore becuase to me thats the petstore trap where everything they have is a rescue. Really sad about the petstore reputation becasue there is some good petsotres out there I just never found one. Maybe the best would be aquarium center in randallstown

I have worked in a few different pet stores. I did it so that I could try to give the animals the best (humane) treatment I could. I would go in on my days off and walk the puppies, work with the birds on hand training and just love on the small animals (so they would be used to human touch.) I ended up with LOTS of animals because I always felt so bad for them. They didn't sell gliders (thank goodness). A pet store IS NOT a place for one of these babies. Thank you for 'rescuing' those babies. I hope they will not get anymore, but sadly, they probably will.

That is definitely the pet store trap. Look how most petstores have the puppies...in tiny little cages with no toys and the puppies little feet slipping through the bars on the floor. They want you to feel sorry for the animals so you want to take them home. On the boston terrier forum I was on people would say how they had to save the puppy from the pet store. But it's just more money in the store's pocket and they will replace the animal quickly. I won't buy from any stores that sell puppies or gliders or any animal that likely came from a mill.

Now that there are glider mills which is becoming to be a more common word expect an explosion of glider rescues, political problems, and overall negativity around the glider population. Luckily they won't have the same fate as iguanas.Since the most specialized care needed is there diet. Im still happy about the glider onlt being able to usually reproduice 2 babies a year so alot of people that is in it to just make money will be discouraged from owning them.

hi all, i'm in Baltimore and have been a glider owner since this May. I'm currently attending Syracuse University, but i'm back for breaks and such. I'll probably be moving back after graduation this coming June. If anyone's still looking for a petstore in the area, there's a fairly decent one on Ridgely Road near Loehmann's, Old Navy and the Giant. I can't quite remember the name, but their gliders were sweet and well fed (Brisky's, fruit+veggies, mealies etc) and they had a great supply of glider things. I get my supply of dried papaya bits and nectar there and considered getting Marcus a new cage from there before i discovered Suncoast. If anyone's in the area, please send me a pm and maybe we could get together over winter break?

If anyone has any thoughts, they'd be greatly appreciated.

I have not seen the vet directory as it will NEVER open for me but I use the exotics vet at Fullerton Animal Hospital on Bel Air Road. His name is Dr. Brown and he's great. He's actually never seen my suggies as they are in good health (knock on wood) but he's seen my rabbit and rats when they were ill and he did the regular care of my ferret. I take my dogs to Fullerton to see any old vet but Dr. Brown is the only one that handles exotics. Also, thanks for the info on the pet store...I'm going to have to check the place out for some glider stuff.

Oh no, thank you: turns out, Dr. Brown isn't even that far away from where I live, so should I end up back in Baltimore after I finish school, I'll be making a few phone calls. Oh, and yeah, SeaBreeze is great: they've got all sorts of cute little fuzzies as well as the multitude of dried fruit bits and glider nectars. They also had a supply of glider shampoos, vitamins, and cleaning fluids the last time I checked. P.S.: where did you get your gliders from, if you don't mind my asking: i'm looking to get Marcus a friend as he's been single for a while and the one female joey i'd been anticipating is beginning to precariously fall through the cracks due to irritating circumstances. I'd originally been considering looking at girls in SeaBreeze, but I'd be happy to hear of breeders in the MD area.

A fantastic MD glider vet is Dr. Weist at Patuxent Valley Animal Hospital in Laurel. I've had him for 11 years, and he has really helped us out a lot. He really loves these little guys and has done lots of specialized research on them. I owe him their lives--especially as he saved one of my girls from a urinary tract infection.

Sorry daZblu, just saw your response. I got my guys from someone in college park who didn't want them anymore...I have noticed they have been turning up on craigslist more and more lately. I don't think people really understand the care involved...the guy I got mine from certainly didn't.

I haven't had a chance to check out SeaBreeze yet but I have next week off so I'm definitely going to make a trip. Very excited about that...I'm so used to having to order everything online that it will be so nice to be able to actually look at everything for myself.

On and to SiN...I'm also born and raised Dundalk!

Hey everyone!! I live in Westminster MD and will be looking to get 2 female gliders in a few months.
I am working on setting up a cage and gettting all needed supplies.
I think gliders are so cute and me and my husband would love to have a pair.
Im still trying to find breeders in Maryland near my arrea that i would be able to get some baby female joeys as soon as i have everything set up...I know people who raise them that would ship them here but i dont want to put them through the stress of that much travel.

Well hope to hear from some breeders in my area soon!!

Happy New Year to everyone as well.

Dear Green Crayon:We are a local breeder, of 4 yrs, right next door to you! we're in Mt. When I say "we" it's my grandson & I. He is also from Westminster. If your interested, you are more than welcome to stop by most anytime. To see our suggies and/or us. Phone # 301-829-5553 or email me, with any questions you have.

Wish I logged on sooner. Would gladly have gotten togather with you for Expo at Timonium. Di

New to the forum, But my grandson & I have been breeding gliders for over 4 yrs now. So we wanted to add our 2 cents worth and let you guys know we have a great glider vet right in Columbia.

Thank God! We have never had to use him personally(used hops.for past 6 yrs.for our other animals) since all of our gliders have always been & stayed very healthy. But have spoken to him and personally (wanted him to know us- just in case) and recommend him to our customers as a precaution.

PS. never bothered to join a forum before, since most are SOOOOO outdated & filled with so many other links and advertisments. But this forum really caught my eye and I love the concern of the members as well as how it is monitered. Good work staff!

Hello everyone in Maryland!

We're having a DC/MD/VA glider get together in September at the Washington D.C. Zoo. Visit the "Events" section of this forum and click the VA topic!

HEllo everyone! I was wondering if there was anyone in MD who would be willing to meet up and allow me to see/interact with their gliders before I purchase two of my own. I live in Westminster, so if live close by and have gliders and are willing to meet then let me know smile thanks
