So, I have someone interested in purchasing my gliders but this person is only 16. I don't know much about these things. Is this illegal or something? Please help! Do they need a guardian signature? Thanks!

I have adopted to two minors, but I have the parent or parents sign, as well as the child.

Most times everything goes will, but I have read of some issues where the ending was not good.

Just talk with the minor as well as a parent or both.

It is not illegal to sell gliders to minors BUT...you can have no contract with a minor. Even if they sign one, they can not be held to it.

That is up to you. I don't think there is anything illegal about it, but keep in mind that if you have a contract, a minor's signature on it will be worthless.

I don't adopt to minors but this is a decision every breeder must make for themselves. Good luck.

I am only 15 and bought 2 gliders from someone off here. I got more from Connie and she had my parents sign the contract.

If you feel the home is a good home, then you are "legally" selling to the adults in the household, as they are the ones that would be signing the contract. This is a decision that you as a breeder have to make for yourself.

Just be careful and ask lots of questions. Only a handful of the sales I have made to under 18 still have their gliders. I have 24 cages for a reason. some came back traumatized
If they cannot come to your home and learn then I would not do it AT ALL. I have had a recent experience in particular where if I had not been FB friends and watching and learning, my gliders may have gotten into the wrong hands. So if you want to PM me who that might be we can make sure you are not dealing with the same person

I also will not sell to minors. It's just a risk I am not willing to take. My biggest fear is that one of them would need emergency vet care one day and the owner (being a minor) would not be able to transport them to the vet and/or be able to pay for their medical care. I see far too many posts where a minor is asking for medical advice because a parent can't or won't take their glider/s to a vet.

Very true, but I think I see even more from adults posting the same things. ohwell

There is a lot to consider when thinking of selling to a minor. One of the major things is when they go off to college, who is going to take care of the gliders? School gets very busy with older kids. Those that think they have it "all planned out", I hate to tell ya, things change!

My son was going to go to a local college and work in the family business. Yeah, well that changed pretty quickly when he decided to become a Marine. Had he been an owner of gliders, they would have gotten left behind/rehomed or something.

I am 16 and I bought two gliders from a breeder in Canada. She asked me A LOT of questions about how to care for them and such and she also talked with me and my mom on the phone a couple times. I think that if you do decide to sell to a minor you should be sure to ask them lots of questions so that you know that they know what they are doing. I know a lot of people my age who have no sense of responsibility that would be terrible glider owners. BUT! You should judge a persons ability to properly take care of an animal by their maturity, not their age. Some of us aren't so bad. wink Good luck!

I'm 19 and I have my quad! whoo-hoo! :jump2: Even though I'm not really a minor anymore, I'm still in college. I got my first pair in the smack dab MIDDLE of my freshman year in college while playing a division 2 sport (softball)! Oh and you bet your bottom dollar I brought them with me and snuck them into the dorms!!! :rofl2: Shhhh! Also skipped class one day because I was at the emergency vet for like 6 hours one night and didn't get home til after 3 am! There was no way I was going to class after that! Whew! LOL. I know, I know…. education is important.. :blah: I shouldn't skip class… :blah: ….but there was NO WAY I wasn't going to the e-vet after Meeko's oil incident, NO WAY NO HOW! Hehehe smile They're my wittle babiesss! And I'm sure there are other youngsters out there that feel/would do the same thing!

I think that if you were to sell to a minor you should have a contract with their parents and make it known that it is legally binding. Also it would be a good idea to make sure that the minor's parents are in full agreement and understand what sugar gliders are as well as how they are cared for.

In that contract I would also have it stated that if for any reason it doesn't work out, the Gliders are to be returned to you.

It should be well understood that Gliders are more like family and a lifestyle rather than a pet.

I know personally that my babies and rescues take up 90% of my time. lol. We are almost always together until dinner time and its a huge commitment but an honor.

If you're not 100% sure that this person, minor or adult, will take care of and love your Gliders, don't do it.

...I will still have them. Just because I am a minor doesn't mean I will be getting rid of them. I kind of feel stereotyped.
You can ask Sarah..she knows how dedicated I am.
I have planned out college already and I know exactly how I am doing it. There is no way I will be getting rid of them, ever.

I am a senior in high school and my life is busy with school, friends, guitar, piano, etc but I always find time for my babies.
I already know what college I am going to and I am living at home or getting Ana apartment.

I haven't decided about college or anything. My babies come first no matter what. If something would happen and I can no longer take care of them my dad gets them. I hardly go anywhere because I won't leave them behind, if I go somewhere I take them with me. Most teenagers can't take on the responsiblity of having Sugar Gliders. But there are exceptions some teens can. As you have known us teenagers that have been on this site. I understand your concerns about a teenager having Sugar Gliders, you want the best for your babies. I understand some of you won't sell to teenagers that is your choice. But some of us take better care of our gliders than some adults do. Just make sure you ask plenty of questions to make sure they can take care of your babies.

I have adopted to a minor. As a matter of fact, the last person I adopted to was only 16. I met and talked to her mother prior to adoption and I met up with minor two or three times to discuss things and watch her with the gliders to see how she was with them. My skittish joey LOVED her. I knew right then she was special.

I had an adult (vet tech actually) return two joeys to me a short time after I adopted to the minor and she ended up adopting those two joeys as well. She is a TERRIFIC owner. She lives locally so I have even been to visit the gliders in their home a couple of times.

I am a minor, and have adopted gliders from 3 different people. I've had my gliders since i was 11, and am now 16. A lot of adult owners stereotype the minors as spoiled brats who get what they want (in this case, exotic animals). But, this is not true for all of us. I, as well as many others have not gotten the money for my animals from daddy's bank. I have worked hard for my gliders and do pay for them myself. It saddens me that a few bad teens have ruined the reputation for all minors in the community. The people who really know me know that i'm more mature than the average teen these days. I prefer to have tent time over going to a party, football game, etc anyday. People on this board have their oppinions about me and in previous years i've been called names, but i think i've grown from the past. The contracts when i purchase gliders are signed by my parents. When i sell gliders it is between my parents and the buyer/buyers parents. The people who I adopt from have been very sweet and have no problem with me being a minor. They know that I treat my gliders as well as a fully mature adult. The people i've sold to think my joeys are very sweet and tame, and have had no problem. I am quite proud of myself for not letting the few rotten people stop me from keeping my babies.

Although im not a minor I got my gliders my first year of college. I have my own apartment and wouldn't give them up for anything. Trust me I'm busy I went to Canada for a month this summer for school and my mother kept them for me. I just think it depends on the maturity level of said minor not just minors in general.

Well, I certainly didn't make this post for anyone to feel stereotyped. This is something that we can ALL vouch for (as every one of us grows older. each one of us has passed through younger years, ect). I have a questionnaire that is pretty lengthy. I am rather picky and there were definitely things that I said "I have a problem with this." One of the things was diet. I pretty much said "You need to pick an appropriate diet." Here's a list of diets. Read through & get back to me. I did this on anything that I saw that I didn't "approve of."

I think the persistance & willingness to learn has kept me considering this. I am being incredibly selective in this process and with many inquiries, everyone else has said "forget about this," because I am being just that critical about the homes my babies go to.

do you get your contracts notarized??

I don't think any of the minors here should feel stereotyped. The concern is towards minors who show a lack of responsibility and a lack of knowledge without the willingness to learn.

Many younger people prove to be great owners as many have proven but there are still many that go by impulse or fads. I think the tricky thing is making sure that the parents are involved enough to know that if something goes wrong that they will be there to support the minor to ensure that the Gliders never go without.

It's more of a maturity and responsibility thing. Some people have it and others don't and that includes adults as well. Minors just carry the small factor of not being able to personally sign a contract but as long as the parents are on board and in full understanding it works.

And Biscuit,
It's really great that you're being super selective. smile I would have loved Topanga myself. lol.

The contract should definitely be notarized for legal reasons.

I'm 17, and I got my first glider for my 17th birthday. I take the responsibility for both my girls. I drive them to the vet myself and pay for them myself. Or my boyfriend does, since he bought our second one. I've got plans to live off campus next year in college so I can keep them, and I treat them like they're my kids. BUT the majority of kids my age don't do that. Some adults don't even do that. So I completely understand.
