WARNING - GRAPHIC PHOTOS OF SURGICAL PROCEDURE IN THIS ALBUM! BEWARE SUGAR GLIDER OWNERS - UNSAFE CHAIN!! This chain was purchased from Mr. Chain by Davie of Spoiled Rotten Suggies. (PLEASE NOTE: Davie is NOT responsible in ANY way for this issue!! This is a MANUFACTURING ERROR and not an assembly error!) Davie had previously advised Mr. Chain's service agent (Shirley) about the chain, and was advised that their chain quality was decreasing because the chains are being made from old molds... this results in SHARP POINTS (aka burs) on the ends of the links and some links are actually arriving to Davie ATTACHED (almost melted together Davie says) to one another. If the burs (points) are not removed with nippers or a Dremel tool BEFORE USE IN GLIDER toys, your gliders could be cut, poked, scratched, stabbed, or otherwise injured, possibly resulting in self mutilation as happened to my Dayana this morning. Davie already does this... but the toy that possibly injured Dayana was made BEFORE the problem was noticed and addressed with Mr. Chain. Davie is aware of this problem - she has contacted Mr. Chain again today asking if their molds have been replaced yet, as she was promised previously that they would be. I am sure she will be along to post once she gets a response from them. In the meantime, PLEASE BE CAREFUL!! If you use this chain (named "Gothic Chain") or any chain from Mr. Chain for that matter (just to be safer) PLEASE check the ENDS of EACH LINK for burs (points) and nip them off or file them down before use! http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy174...yanas%20Injury/

Poor baby! That looks so painful. Thank you for the warning, I am going in now to check all my toys. Hoping for a full and very quick recovery for your Dayana.

How did the injury happen? Was she trying to jump off or land on the toy? I know it doesn't matter. Its just the injury seems so severe I wanted to know where to check the toys for possible points of injury...

I think it was a small injury that led to SM which made it that horrible, poor baby I'm so sorry for her. Prayers and good thought sent...

They took reset parts off of a toy and used them as nesting material inside their pouch - as many gliders often do. Apparently a scratch from the sharp part caused her to over groom is all we can figure.

Thanks everyone... Dayana is still hanging in there... she has ripped off the gauze, though I think that was the point - something other than herself for her to focus on. I think she and I are going to have a long night together... please keep the prayers and positive thoughts coming... Dapple's daughter is counting on that positive energy to get her through this... I will update again in the morning...

I am so sorry this is happening to this little one! I do want to thank you for posting the photos (even though they are VERY graphic). It shows everyone just how badly and how quickly a glider can self mutilate.
My best thoughts and prayers for her and her quick healing.

Stayed up most of the night with Dayana... she is NOT happy about taking her meds... she also got the gauze off entirely and the shoulder area looks a bit red and raw this morning... the rest looks LICKED but not CHEWED. She did eat but not much. She is well hydrated. I have called the vet - he is in the field today - I am waiting for him to return my call to see if he wants anything else done right now. She is sleeping at the moment, but I don't imagine she is getting as much rest as she should either as I can't seem to stop peeking in to check on her :-P Meanwhile I want to be perfectly clear - I am NOT blaming the CHAIN or the TOY MAKER. As I stated in the original post, the chain links with the sharp parts are the only "obvious" injury-causing item found inside the cage and in fact inside the pouch itself... it is also possible that she scratched herself with her own nail or that one of her cage mates scratched her with their nails while jockeying for position in the pouch. The point of the post was not to cause a panic or point fingers or place blame. It was to let people know to go over their toys and chains no matter the kind, type, size, manufacturer or assembler and make sure all rough/sharp places are filed down or cut off just in case that was what caused this. Even if it did not cause this it certainly could have done so, or could have caused another issue like a damaged eye or a puncture wound if I had not found and removed the link. I did not post at ALL until AFTER I contacted the toymaker, who had already contacted the chain manufacturer. In fact, my original post I had planned left out the toy maker's name entirely, but after speaking with her, she wanted it known that she had contacted the manufacturer, which necessitated adding her name to the post and then we deiced together that the wording as it ended up getting posted was what worked best to convey the intended message of caution. it seems a few people got their feathers ruffled thinking I was blaming her, and I am NOT. I love her toys I love her pouches I love her products and she is also a personal friend. I still recommend buying from her and plan to continue doing so myself as well. She is in NO WAY responsible for this issue.

Davie's toys ARE AWESOME. I have many here and wish I could have about 50 more! (dang bank account!). I am so surprised anyone jumped to the conclusion that you were trying to place any blame. I certainly did not take it that way. I applaud both you and Davie for bringing it to our attention as well as taking the issue to the manufacturer of the chain. IF the chain caused this, the manufacturer is now aware and hopefully will take steps to fix the problem. As we go along with our gliders, we learn. We have learned that all "mating wounds" may not be from "mating" but could be from joeys hanging on to mom/dad for rides (their little nails are so sharp!). We learn that facial abcesses are NOT always from dry food (it could be from nothing but soft foods and their teeth going bad). And with your poor little girl, we learned there COULD be injuries from such small things as a "burr" on a plastic toy. (IF that is what caused it, if not, we need to be aware it MIGHT). I don't wish this type of injury on anyone or any animal. My prayers continue...

She's pulling the staples :-( The top part is pretty raw and the whole thing looks kind of icky. My vet wants me to stay the course for the moment. I'm trying to keep her calm and give her the pain meds... the more she sleeps the less she messes with it. At least she isn't ripping into the flesh or her stitches. These are pics from today. Some are very graphic but way less so than yesterday: http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy174...jury%20Day%202/

Julie, have you discussed the use of Vetericyn VF with the vet? I ask because this wound is equally (compared to size) as the one my horse had. I SWEAR by the healing powers the Vetericyn had on the horse. I've used it on mating wounds as well and they heal so much faster. It can be used on deep wounds like this. And while I've never tried it, you might want to ask the vet about using Manuka Honey on the wound. http://manukahoney.com/

My little Buddie had a bad wound like that. He didn't heal well and with the second surgery they tried staples. Those were very painfull. He had to have the staples removed and back to surgery for debreading and more stitches. You did a wonderful job telling everyone what had happened. I don't feel you have pointed fingers at anyone. Hope she gets better soon!

So sorry to hear about your baby. Hope she gets well soon. As a vendor I have been told it is our responsibility to check every single inch of our toys and products before they go out for possible issues that could arise. I'm not pointing any fingers I'm just going off what I was told. I hope everyone that has this chain is pulling the toys out checking. I quit using most any chain ages ago I use fleece braids in their place. Give that baby lots of love.

So sorry Dayana is going through this. I'm sure you'll both get through this, just have to take it day by day, you'll already handling it much better than I would be.

Back to the vet today. She ripped open the neck/shoulder area again. They removed the staples (only 4 of the original 11 were still in anyway) and said from the chest down it looked better though wet from licking... it was the top area that was bad. They cleaned it with Chlorhexidine, re-stitched (internally) the top part as far as they could (there is an open area so ragged they can't stitch it) and also noted that there are now fresh holes (bite marks) all around the top of the wound that were not there yesterday. <sigh> So then 2 drops of glue on 2 small places that were being stubborn and a slathering of Silvadine ointment over the whole mess... then they switched her from Ditrim to Baytril and sent me off with some Chlorhexadine too. I am going to give the Baytril 1x a day, Metacam 1x a day or more often if needed, clean it once a day, and add Vetericyn spray after I clean it. She is SO not impressed right now, but finally chilled out and is sleeping at the moment. We shall see where it goes from here... WARNING: the pictures are graphic again, so don't look if you get queasy easily. This is day 3, and all 3 days are documented including surgical photos. http://s789.photobucket.com/albums/yy174...jury%20Day%203/

From my understanding, Davie is being sort of "run down" behind the scenes for using this chain. I would like one more time to be VERY specific here: Davie is not responsible for this injury in any way, shape or form. I love her toys and wish I could afford to buy more of them.I use plastic chain in my own toys. Until I found these 2 links with the sharp points, I never thought a bit about plastic chain being a hazard. using fleece braids is a great idea - but not all plastic chain is a hazard - not to mention it is simply nor possible for any person to look for every single "possible issues that could arise" because accidents happen no matter how good your quality control methods are. Not to mention, there is still no proof that is was definitely the chain that caused the issue. No one was in the pouch with Dayana when she got hurt to see what actually caused the injury... just because I found the chain after the fact does not make it the absolute cause... it's the most likely cause, sure - but that is why I specified "possibly dangerous chain" when I made the original post. Other types of chain are also having issues apparently, including other styles from the same manufacturer. The point of this post is NOT to complain about the vendor who used the chain. The purpose in this post is to get everyone to double check their toys - especially their chain - no matter the age of the chain or who the manufacturer was - just in case it was the chain that did this to Dayana. Additionally, the secondary point is to let everyone see Dayana's injuries and keep everyone informed about what the vet did and how it turns out in case anyone else has a glider with a similar injury. Again: Davie is not responsible for this injury in any way, shape or form... so anyone taking part in the behind the scenes bashing of her that I heard rumors about is encouraged to stop and consider that: (1) the chain may not even have caused this and (2) Davie is an incredible toymaker with wonderful, creative and beautiful items made with the safety and pleasure of all sugar gliders in mind ....so it really isn't fair for anyone to speak ill of her or her toys because of Dayana's injury. I will continue to update everyone on Dayana's condition. Please keep the prayers and good thoughts coming

Julie, I am SOOOOO sorry to hear that she is not leaving the injury along. There has GOT to be a way to keep Dayana from tearing herself open. I know you and your vet have explored every possibility. Is there any way Denise's e-jacket can be modified with a big opening over the wound, or maybe incorporating at least part of an ecollar to keep her from reaching it? Yes, vendors are responsible for making safe products... and owners are responsible for checking products... but you know what? Sometimes no matter how diligent everyone in the chain is (no pun intented! ), accidents happen. This was just one of those cases, whether it happened because of the chain or something else. I sure don't hold Davie responsible. My heart goes out to you and Dayana. Heal fast little girl, and LEAVE IT ALONE!!!

Is there any way Denise's e-jacket can be modified with a big opening over the wound, or maybe incorporating at least part of an ecollar to keep her from reaching it? Denise and I were on the phone earlier and don't think the e-jacket could be modified in a way it would work, not irritate the wound and still stay on the glider.

Oh Julie, I'm so sad and sickened to see how extensive Dayana's wound is! I've been playing "hit & skip" with topics here & had NO IDEA what was happening in your neck of the woods til Dancing brought it to my attention. After looking at the pictures, I truly can't think of ANY WAY at the moment that I could make an e-jacket which would help & not irritate the wounds. I've got a road trip to make today & will talk to "the committee" (in my head ) about ANY ideas that they can come up with. Now that I've seen where the damaged areas are...they're in conference thinking HARD. If there's ANYTHING that "we" can think of, we'll let you know. Prayers being sent to St. Francis to watch over you and Dayana.

Dayana crossed the bridge this morning, in my hands. She fought really hard for several days but opened herself up again AND the wound got necrotic. The vet and I made the decision that she deserved better and we let her go peacefully. I miss her very much and am not up to discussing it further or posting the pictures from last night/this morning yet. Thanks for everyone's prayers and good thoughts. Love you Day-Day...

Oh gosh, I to just found this posting about your beloved suggie(s) and now to read that she has past. I am in tears for you and for her.
And Rascal, God bless you to little one.
I pray they both find each other in Glider Heaven and are now flying through the trees where gliders congregate to discuss their lives with their beloved owners.
In a breeze they will be with you,in a whisper they are talking in your ear.
Telling you they love you and are well and happy to have spent their lives with you, they love you as much as you loved them. God bless you both and to the Gliders. Heaven is yours my sweets.
As time goes by and my loves pass. I will forever be greatfull for the time we had together. I will see you soon my loves.

I am so so VERY sorry for your loss. This is very scary, indeed. So, if you take a dremel to the sharp spots, it should be okay? Scary thing is, you don't know exactly what caused it. That's terrifying. Again, I am so sorry!
