Thanks Crystal.....That is Skids my WFB. The camera does add some weight....lol. In the picture when the reporters are talking is my Leu, Helo. My WFB is Skids.
They didn't get all of the facts quite right. I have had gliders for over 10 years. One of my gliders is 18 years old and I have been breeding for about years. But close enough.

Crystal.....I don't have any pics posted of my kids because I have had them stolen in the past (not from GC people). Where can I post them and will they be water-marked so no one can take them?

Great job Erin! Seems to me, one reason this story was successful in attracting coverage is the evidence - " veterinarians report they've received at least four dead or dying sugar gliders...all were purchased at mall kiosks". So it becomes public service story that is not just someone's opinion, there are facts, and that's what reporters like to deal with. Maybe Florida Veterinary Specialists was in a unique position to recognize something was happening because they are part of a vet network: http://bluepearlvet.com/

Erin, great job on getting educational information out! With that being said though, I do have a couple questions for you... According to the article you said: "If a glider is stressed out the will harm themselves..." It was also told to me by one of our members here that you stated on the video (which has been removed for some reason so I didnt have a chance to watch it)they will self mutilate if alone. I would have to disagree with this. Although a glider can overgroom and become depressed if not given enough attention, toys, proper cage, etc...I do not know of a case where a glider has harmed itself intentionally or there being a mutilation case unless it was ill. Also you stated in the article: You disagree with the advertising of how gliders get along well with other pets, good with young children, and make great traveling companions... Again...*my* thoughts, Get along with other pets... ANY animal can be trained to get along with other animals in your home...How many here have dogs and cats living under the same roof? Yet, they are supposed to be separate. How many would allow a bird to walk around on the floor while your two dogs(one being a lab)are running around loose in the house? I have a black headed Caique that thinks he rules my house and often will get off his cage to come look for me, yelling at the dogs if they get too close. Do I allow them ALONE in the same room, NO...there is NO animal that should be left unattended with another if it is known to be a dangerous situation. My bird learned the hard way one day when he thought he would get off the cage to come look for me and my lab snuck up behind him. Although he had the WHOLE bird in his mouth when I came out of the room, he did not hurt the bird...he was trying to *Play*....THAT is why I dont leave them alone... A friend of mine had a cat and dog that grew up together...the cat made the dog mad one day and with one snap the cat was dead...dogs fault? NO...but did they always get along? YES... So, although the animals CAN co-exist and get along with each other, it is NEVER advised to leave them alone with each other. Good with young children....I have some that are VERY good with young children. Should a parent buy one for a young child? NO...I dont believe a young child should have ANY kind of pet until they hit at least 13 years old, they just arent responsible enough without the parents help... Make good traveling pets? You say no. I say Yes, IF they are brought up doing it. Look at our own Lil Nitro. She is a truck driver and she keeps some of her gliders in the truck on the road with her and they are fine and happy. How many of us take our gliders with us? Having to move from Texas to Florida I have to say it was MUCH easier moving with my 8 cages of gliders than it was my two dogs and bird... So although, I know what you were trying to get across I really dont think *fear* is the way to educate the public. And that is how *I* took it. I applaud you for getting out there wanting to educate though. Also I was told on the video you stated you had been a breeder for *18* years?? Really??? So you were one of the very first to get gliders when they came over? Since you have only been a member here on GC since August of 08, do you mind if I ask who you have been selling to all this time? How many gliders do you own? Are you a USDA licensed or do you not need to be? Once again, thank you for trying to educate the public, but I think this also shows us that we all feel a different way about gliders... Does anyone know why the video was taken down??

I don't think anything said in that news article was "fear" based at all. In a nut shell it said Pocket Pets travels around, sells at malls, some sold at the malls they have been at showed up very sick at some vets and that Erin disagrees with the sales message, which as you say is her right to do. Erin also did clarify in an earlier post that the station misquoted the years she had her animals. ..and if Pocket Pets had wanted to set things straight maybe they shouldn't have gone the "No Comment" route... JMO, of course!

Peggy, I just responded to your PM a minute ago. Erin said in this thread that the news misquoted her in saying she had been breeding for 18 years. She said she has been breeding for 10 years & has an 18 year old glider. Interesting thoughts... I've always heard gliders that are left alone can get lonely & self-mutilate. Is that not the case? Also, I think the problem most people have with the idea of gliders being "friends" with other animals is that this company is pushing it as a selling point - a common thing & a good idea...and we all know that there are a lot of people out there without any common sense. As you said, some animals can interact when supervised. But I don't think I'd be telling my buyers that gliders will get along great with other animals or that the other animals won't think of them as prey because they have no scent (which is what this company told me at our fair). My dog wouldn't hurt a fly, but when she sees those suggie tails flapping around, she wants to play with them. We've had a glider jump onto her back before & she just sat there & did nothing....but I don't trust her. On the flip side, we used to occasionally let our cats, dog, rabbits, and rats all roam free in our kitchen (with supervision). And they all got along pretty beautifully. I knew the animals & I trusted them together & I kept an eye on them. But I still wouldn't tell someone that rats could get along with a cat...just because it worked in one case. I'll be interested in Erin's answers to your questions.... But I am also interested in focusing on the statement about several vets saying they have seen sick & dead gliders coming from the mall. I wonder if someone could get their hands on the vet's names & see if they can back up that statement, so some factual evidence could be presented to Virgil &/or the powers that be for putting an end to that. I will admit I saw Virgil at SGGA & although I don't agree with his business practices, he did appear to care about sugar gliders and seemed open to our ideas about changes he could make. I'm not defending him...but he keeps asking for proof & facts & if we can't bring that to him, he'll keep denying there's a problem. Misty

Misty, thank you for the info via PM. My bad for not seeing that she had already addressed that *mistake* about how the news channel messed up her owning gliders for 18 years when in all actuality it was only 10 years, but it really does show how even the news station can mess things up, word things wrong, and the story takes a change and says something that wasnt even supposed to be said huh?? That is why most businesses are advised by their attorneys NOT to comment to news stations. (Not defending, but had been advised against it for the very reason myself when I had my store). Misty, I could not agree with you more. When I am selling a joey I always tell folks yes they CAN learn to live with your other animals, just NEVER unsupervised...but I not only do that for gliders, I did it for ALL the animals I sold at one point. Doesnt mean people will listen to you though and you are always going to have that one or two that just let it have the run of the house and wind up killed even if the other animal was only trying to *play*... But I am also interested in focusing on the statement about several vets saying they have seen sick & dead gliders coming from the mall. I wonder if someone could get their hands on the vet's names & see if they can back up that statement, I would be lying if I said this part did not make me ill when I read it...because it did. I WILL believe a vet, but as you stated, I would love to have the names of the vets as well.

Ok I am at an appointment but will be happy to address some of your comments when I get home.
Please keep in mind. I told them at the beginning of the interview I was not an expert. And that I didn't think I did everything right...which they didn't include.
the interview lasted over an hour, the piece was less than 2 mins & there were no direct quotes.
And once again.....I have had gliders for 10 years, I have an 18 year old glider but have only been breeding for 4 years. I do not have USDA yet because I don't meet the requirements although I have the paperwork ready to go as soon as I do.

.....Theu took no direct quotes regarding other pets, trraveling & children. I also did not say gliders mutilate themselves because of lonliness. I said they can if they become stressed.

Gosh Erin....the news misquoted you & then I misquoted you too. I apologize. I was thinking you said you had been breeding for 10 years, but you actually said you had owned gliders for 10 years. Not a big deal, but I do apologize for remembering that wrong. Yes, Peggy I'm interested in someone doing some further research to see if we can get some hard data from the vets. My own vet has said he saw a lot more people coming in with sick gliders right after the gliders had been sold at our fair. I am crazy busy right now, but if anyone has the time & know-how to research this & try to do something with it, I will be happy to give you my vet's info. Misty

Peggy - one link to the video also had a text article included which stated: Veterinarians report they've received at least four dead or dying sugar gliders in the past several weeks. The animals were malnourished, underweight, or suffering from neurological disorders. All were purchased at mall kiosks, according to Florida Veterinary Services. Florida Veterinary Services is a large vet hospital here in Tampa - open 24/7. It is primarily an emergency and referral facility for animals that need more advanced care than some small vet offices can provide. (my boxer Maya received chemotherapy there last year) There are probably 30 vets associated with their facility. I do not know how many of them see gliders.

Ok.....like Linda said you can pick apart whatever you want in the interview. I am not going to defend myself. No one else was in the room for the hour long interview. So whatever editing was done or quotes that were generalized are simply that. I apologize but I am not willing to brake down every word I said to the interviewer. I think they generally got thw idea of my goal & that was good enough for me. I hope that people will stop trying this apart & realize that it was done in the best interest of the gliders. As far as the vet Hosptial is concerned, I respect their employees' right to privacy. They did what they could do to help. Honestly I appreciate those who support the intentions behind my actions, which was to get people to realize gliders are a more complex animal than how they were being represented. That was my goal & I think it came across. However, I would rather put my efforts to doing what is in the best interests of these animals then defending my efforts. Don't misunderstand me.....everyone has the right to their opinion. I think mine is clear enough in the actions I took for these animals. That's enough for me.

Erin, I dont think one person was trying to tear anything apart. I think we ALL said good for you for trying to educate the public, did we not? And I dont think anyone is thinking you need to *defend* yourself.
But as you stated, you had an HOUR long interview with these people and they got your words wrong and with all the editing they took that hour long interview and made it into 2 minutes.
It puzzled me to hear that you were breeding for 18 years (according to the news) so of course that is going to bring up the question which I am sorry I did not read the answer prior to asking the question.
Also, you said that they got some of the things you stated wrong, so although as I said, I understand where you are coming from, we need to get the facts out there for the newbies and others that are here on this forum reading this thread and if they see the article or video, we dont want them to panic if they have a single glider and all of a sudden thinks its going to self mutilate because it is alone or might get stressed.
So dont think people are going against you, just trying to get the facts out there is all, and since you yourself said the news station misworded what you said, I just wanted to clarify for others. Sorry if that offended you. It wasnt meant to.
I will agree with you, people DO need to realize that gliders are more complex than say your dog or cat.
