It started just over a week ago with his nose starting to run again. I put him back on his nose drops and talked to my vet and he was put back on his antibiotics to prevent a sinus flare up. If he got too wheezy I was to give him his prednisone to help with inflamation. Well it didn't work. He is really wheezy this morning, in addition, his nose is slightly swollen and he's opened it up in the same spot he did last winter, he scratched himself next to his eye and had a bloody nose sometime last night. He has a Dr apt for this afternoon unless they can squeeze us in earlier.
On the plus side, he is well groomed with a very fluffy tail and alert ears and no eye boogers.

Well, just got back from the vets office. Brodie goes in tomorrow morning for an x-ray. I'm also to make a few slight changes in his medication. We decided that it was in Brodie's best interest to give him his prednisone in 2 doses per day rather than one, so starting tomorrow he'll be getting 1/2 dose in the morning & the other 1/2 in the evening. Hopefully this will give him round the clock help on the inflamation and keep his breathing easier. He is also going to be getting his allergy drops more often through the day/night 3-4 times a day now rather than just twice. I have to admit that Brodies breathing after getting his prednisone this morning really improved and by this afternoon he was hardly wheezing. Still some nasal discharge, but I haven't yet figured out a way to train him to blow his nose. He's like a little kid & just wipes the drips off on whatever or whoever is handy.

Well, it sounds like good news so far! Sorry he's still dealing with a runny nose and wiping it on you and everything (one) around him, but I am glad to hear he's already wheezing less than he was from the meds! Anxious to hear the update after xrays! Sending thoughts your way!
The prednisone, does an amazing job with helping him breath easier, but it is nasty to take him off of. You have to wean them off otherwise they have rather dramatic withdrawl symptoms.

Brodie first got a SEVERE sinus infection last Dec. We have been fighting it off and on ever since. You should have seen my poor baby then, his poor little face was so swollen it was pathetic. Compared to then this is relatively mild, but I'm just paranoid about it getting that bad again.

could it be that you have any plug in air freshners or cleaning agent causing these problems. could it be what u are cleaning the cage with. the cats maybe they are allergic to the cats
I clean the cage with either antibacterial soap (same kind as I've used for years) or with just hot water. No air fresheners, and if it was the kitties it would be constant rather than off & on. I have noticed that when the weather changes it flares up so I think it's more a reaction to that.

Me too, poor little guy had a nosebleed last night. It's so frustrating, all I could do was to keep cleaning him up and give him some torb so his head wouldn't hurt. You have to know Brodie to appreciate this, but he pretty much ignored the nose bleed and decided to run on his wheel and just snort every so often to clear his airway....go figure.

That he's playing is a good sign tho cause if he was feeling terrible he wouldn't so that means what you're doing is helping him. Hang in there Chris this too shall pass.
I just got back from the vets with Brodie. The X-Rays didn't have good news. There is some separation in the bones of his face and this generally means there is some kind of a mass growing in there. Per my vet, I am to keep him on antibiotics to prevent any secondary infections and to continue the prednisone indefinately. Our concern at this point is keeping my little guy comfortable.

I took some pictures of Brodie last night that I thought I'd share. My little man had a good night. He was breathing well, he ate well and he played in his wheel and in his playhouse. If you look at the closeup, you can see the swelling on the right side of his face (the left side of the picture since he's looking at you) It also makes his nose look "off" like it is set at the wrong angle.

Wow did you notice the length of his bottom teeth? Off topic: Chris you know I'm gonna ask if I can use Brodie's story, photos, and xrays in my pp right?
From what I can see, there's seems to be a moderate amount of STS (soft tissue swelling) within the nasal cavity protruding up along the posterior wall. I do not see any indication of a fracture. Although, based on some of your descriptions of excessive head shaking and banging into things, most of this swelling can be tissue/bone bruising which also can give a mass like appearance.
From the photos, the swelling and drainage does appear to be relative to a dense mass indicating a possible infection in correlation to the radio-graphs. It's more prominent on the right side with minimal collection of fluid on the left.
I'm so sorry that your precious little baby is still having issues Chris. My prayers are constantly there for you and Brodie.
Linda, I pray that the "mass like appearance" is bone/tissue bruising from Brodie's overagressive shaking of his head to get the medicine taste out of his mouth rather than some kind of nasal tumor.

Chris called me earlier today (and said I could post but I forgot to).
Brodie does NOT have a tumor. It is either an abcess or cyst and it ruptured today! This sounds bad but is actually good. Now it is open and can drain. He is on antibiotics and is having ointment put on the wound. Now it is a matter of kicking the infection and it healing.
Linda, she did say she feels the magnets played a big role in helping it to surface and pop and said THANK YOU.

Yes Brodies nose "popped" LOL. After his magnet therapy, I noticed that he had opened the spot on his nose where his abscess had drained previously. I went to put antibiotic ointment on it and it spit out some condensed puss....kind of like a pimple popping. I was able to get 2 decent sized amounts out and a few smaller amounts.
I was hoping to get more out tonight after his magnet therapy, but it didn't cooperate.

Chris, you know after Riker and his facial issues I was skeptical of a mass/tumor...his (Riker's) infection literally made his head bones look deformed on Xray until we finally got the right meds combo for him (6 months in)...once the infection began to clear, it didn't diffuse and scatter the Xrays and so they looked normal again. Of course, I'm biased with your guys and don't want to believe the worst anyhow, lol. I think once the infection drains and clears you'll get a much more normal looking Xray...dense infection can do funny things on films.
If you don't mind...I'm going to post Riker's Xrays from that time here...to show how dramatic a difference an infection can make and reinforce little Brodie's good chances You already know I'm really happy for you guys!
Note that this was way before his thyroid meds, and yes, he was a chunk, lol.

I appreciate all the support from everyone through the ups and downs and back ups now. Brodie is continuing to do well and I've gotten pus out several times. Most of it is kinda stiff, more like what would come out of a cyst rather than gooey draining pus (yes I know....ewwwww). Unfortunately since baby bear has been on antibiotics for nearly 2 weeks it wouldn't do any good to collect a sample to be tested. I talked with my vet yesterday and he did the happy dance when I told him Brodie had pus coming out of his nose LOL Brodie is a favorite of everyone at the vet's office and no one wanted to think that he had a mass growing in his face. Anyway, Dr Kaiser immediately got the 3rd antibiotic (the one we didn't think we needed) ready for me to pick up and Brodie started on it yesterday. I am also continuing Brodie's magnet therapy. It has gotten easier to go in 2 directions at once....tho I never thought I'd get the hang of it when Linda first told me to do it that way. Brodie LOVES his therapy. He was all bouncy last night when I got him out. I laid him on my stomach and covered him with my shirt to keep him in place. Well after about 3 rotations I didn't have to worry about him wanting to move. He was totally zoned out and enjoying himself. Even having magnets whiz by his half opened eyes or brushing his ears doesn't faze him.

Well for the last few days, Brodies nose has been swelling up again.....It looked like the abscess he has there was filling up and getting ready to open and drain. But it WASN'T draining! Then about 10 am this morning he came out of his pouch and sat there sneezing and wheezing. I went over to check on him and he had blood running from his nostrils, blood around his eye and blood on the top of his nose. In addition he was breathing very heavy through his mouth. So I called the vet and they had me bring him right in.
Dr Kaiser opened the opening on his nose more and was able to get some of the infection out and had taken it to the back to prepare for culture (and to send off) when Brodie sneezed and OMG a popcorn kernal size wad of cottage cheese looking pus came out the top of his nose! I called Dr Kaiser back so he could get it to sample also. The larger the sample to send in, the better to get an accurate culture of what's going on. Once it was out, Brodies breathing eased and he perked right up. I can totally understand why. If that had been on us it probably would have been something at least ping pong ball to baseball size in our nose!
The culture from the sample we are sending off will not only tell us what antibiotic to use but will tell us if the source of the infection in his nose is a growth (cancerous as Dr Kaiser fears) or simply an abscess that refuses to die.

I am glad it is out though and that he is feeling better. Hopefully they find something in the culture and will be able to help the little guy and fix it for good.
I'm glad he sneezed too....tho it was rather disturbing to see it come out the TOP of his nose rather than his nostrils......that abscess has definately created a hole into his sinus cavity from the outside.

I'd suspected that it had done so before, but it was pretty definate this time, and the vet agreed.....the big tell was when Brodie was breathing through the top of his nose like a dolphin since his nostrils were still stuffed up at that moment. It should heal up fine, but he'll always have a weakness in that area now.

Brodie is doing well. His nose continues to stay "deflated" so hopefully we got most of the crud out. He is also breathing easier and is perky and alert. The only other "crisis" we had was when my new little baby Illusion fussed at him and scared him into hiding his face (he is such a momma's boy) Tho maybe he was trying to boost her confidance by letting her feel in charge?

I'm taking my cats to the vet this morning for their yearly checkup and will grill him about Brodies culture while I'm there. HOpefully he'll have some information.
However, Brodie is continuing to do well. The swelling remains down and he is active, alert and eating well.

Connie, he does have an allergy medicine that he takes most days. When his allergies flare up I have permission to increase them and give them more often as well as giving benadryl. After a few doses, Brodie is doing much better, tho he is still a bit stuffy.

The lab results came back on Brodie's pus......they didn't see any sign of cancer cells in the tissue sent. For some reason it wasn't cultured, not sure why maybe if you have to prepare it for cancer screening they can't culture for bacteria.....who knows. Anyway Dr Kaiser wanted to try to get another sample to culture, but Brodie wasn't cooperating. He is still stuffy, but he is not swollen and had no pus to offer up to the "culture deities".
