So Desi gets a little scared from time to time and I get frustrated because I don't know how to calm her down. My boyfriend sneezed and she started jumping around my back frantically. I'm really uncomfortable having her out because I'm afraid I will not be able to calm her down. Is there any method I can use? I try to pet her gently but that only works once she has calmed down a little on her own.

I would use mealies. Much like a dog, when they get excited or jumpy using a treat to redirect their attention is an amazing tool! So I would get out my tweezers and hang a mealie over my shoulder to help her re-focus.

Pocket or pouch training can help with this. If she knows exactly where her "safe zone" is (the pocket or pouch) then she will go there when she gets frightened.
Also, once she fully trusts you, things will startle her less when she is on you. I have a glider that was very very skittish on me until she learned that she can trust me. Now as long as I am not scared, she is not scared.
That brings me to another point...she is probably sensing your fear of her jumping off and your frustration with not being able to calm her down. Gliders DO pick up on our emotions and react to them. The fact that you are stressed when she gets frightened is probably keeping her stressed longer. Keep your emotions in check, and she will calm down faster.
Mealies are worth a shot, but some gliders get tunnel vision when something spooks them. Distracting with treats never worked with my gliders when they were scared...in fact, it made things worse because they were frightened and there I was trying to shove food in their faces. They never took the treat and I usually scared them more. Just saying not to be surprised if distracting with treats doesn't work.

I have a glider that is like this too. She's a bit of a spit fire. When she spooks, she heads for the hills. So I ONLY take her out in the tent. All my others I am pretty sure I could deal with and I often take them out and give them treats and so on. But not her. If she gets startled, she runs for cover. So try taking her out in a tent. I use the genji ( I think that is how it is spelled!?)

THe Genji tent rocks. I have one that will bite me only if in cage. I put her in Tent with me. No biting. she is very skittish and if startled, will take off too. this way , she stays safe.

As dee said create a safe place for her to hide, whether it is your pocket, your bra or even curling your shirt up at the bottom, when she is in these places, be sure everything stays calm, (here is where the treats work well, when she gets scared in there, do as if you had a small child, comfort her by softly humming silent night .. you will be surprised how well that may work... by the way don't tell anyone but the humming also helps to calm the owners anxieties..

I'll have to give some of these ideas a shot as well. I got my glider from a friend who didn't have time to be able to take care of her properly. She's also full grown already, so it's making the bonding a little more dificult too. She's not necesarily nervouse, unless out of her cage. and I live with 2 realy loud people(not there fault, it's just how they are).

LOL......I live with a crazy loud BF. He's the guy people make fun off that talks on his cell phone loud.ANd that is just the way he is! I was really worried when I got my rescues! I am not sure if it was hard on them or not. They were new and nervous anyways I don't know if it made a difference or not. But they definately are used to him now. One of my girls is very nervous and skittish and after the five months I have had her and lots and lots of patience she is finally coming around. I always just open her cage door and let her decide if she wants to come out. Also allowing her to go back in when she gets nervous. And it has worked for me. bonding just takes awhile you just need a lot of patience.

I'm glad I'm not the only one. I was a little worried. She is coming around slowly but surely. She lets me pet her now. At least for a little bit.lol

Is it ever too late to start pocket trainning? I'm fairly posative that her previouse owners never tried anything like that. and since she's an adault already I didn't know if that would end up stressing her out too much.(all she's ever realy known was a pouch.)

Ok, this is what I did.
When I first got Gizmo he was so difficult and crabbed a lot. I started by putting a tiny peace of fleece in my bra for my scent to be on the fleece. Then I pouched Gizmo in a fleece bag for spectacles, with the little peace of fleece that were in my bra.
I placed the spectacle bag with Gizmo inside in my bra.
You will notice that in the beginning your glider will try to push out of this little spectacle bag, but what makes it so easy is that a spectacle bag has two strings you can quickly pull to close it.
When it's wake up time at night, you can just open the little spectacle bag and lure your glider out with a treat.
Your glider will soon realize that he climbes out of your shirt every time he wakes up.
This worked so well with Gizmo that after only 3 weeks of doing this he automatically dives into my bra in the morning when it's pouching time.
Another thing I did before I even started the bra training, was to play soft instrumental music in the room all day and night. Then when Gizmo was in his spectacle pouch in my bra everywhere I went I played the same music, in the car at friends, I mean EVERYWHERE I went!
He felt safe and secure and soon learned that the safest place for him was in my bra. The only problem I have is that he never wants to get out of my bra.
He even cuddles up with my bra when I take a bath and the bra is hanging there.

Hmmm...I'll have to see about that. That's realy funny, if there comfertable then that's about all there is to it. She realy doesn't like being taken out of her pouch, the moment we touch her she up and clinging to the inside of her bag.I don't wan't to stress her out too much.the music idea would probably help.Thank you, and if anyone has any input on it feel free.

LOL! I'd love to see a pic of this! It's never too late. Most of my gliders happily snuggle in my bra and go right to sleep. Gizmogirl's method sounds awesome! I love the music part too!

I actually tried humming once before to calm her down. It worked for Desi but Rocco went nuts. He started running around the cage in circles. I realized that I haven't been very strict about having a pouch around my neck every time she is on me. I have two pieces of fleece I put in the pouch that have my scent (one for Desi one for Rocco). I think another reason she is a little skittish sometimes is when Rocco is on my boyfriend. She doesn't always see her buddy and I think he makes her feel a little safer when he is around.
I started being really strict with wearing the pouch. I think it helped a little. She still runs onto my back if something startles her (could this be her safe spot?). She likes to sit in the pouch and poke her head out to look at everything when she is not too scared.

That all sounds realy awsome. I believe it could definetly a safe spot for her especialy if she keeps doing it. I'll have to get some fleece. So how do you get your scent on it? I've been trying to be more strict about wearing the pouch. I normaly do it when I wake up about 9am or so, and I wear it for about 4-5 hrs. or until I have to leave. should i try and do it at a diff. time or more? I worrie about taking her out of the house w/me because she's hardly bonded to me.

You can tuck the piece of fleece in your shirt during sleeping time, and use it the next morning with pouching time. If you put your baby in a spectacle bag that can close and just make a short trip somewhere it will be fine.
Otherwise, when you don't feel ready don't go out yet. Just put the piece of fleece in the spectacle bag and the spectacle bag with your baby in the bag in your bra while you are at home.
Have you started the music yet? It really helps to calm them down.
Good luck

LOL sounds like my hubby when I first got Gizmo. He gave me a hard time with everything I wanted to do for Gizmo, but now that he has his own glider which goes with him to work everyday, toys and food are being imported from the States. We are in South Africa and there are not a lot of suggie supplies here.

WoW, South Africa huh? What's it like there? I'm so curious, srry. Yeh he's worried about what kind of music it'd be, and the electric bill, and the other ppl in my house. We do need to get caught up on our electric bill fisrt. We've missed a payment, so it's prety high right now.

We stay in a town in South Africa that is surrounded by game farms. Can get very hot here. There are lots of animals in the areas around us like lions, elephants, antilope, hippos, crocks, leopards and bushbabies, etc.
Explain to your husband that soft instrumentals like Phil Collins will calm the glider a lot.
Having music playing all the time (even when you sleep) have a tremendous calming effect on you (and your glider.
When the music is played softly, he need not be worried about the other people in the house.
I fully understand your concerns about the electic bill, so as soon as you can, start with the music. I am sure that a small stereo set will not add a lot to your electrical bill.
Boesman, our second glider, is a rescue glider that came from a house where he was neglected.
We also played music all the time and this helped us so that we were able to pocket pouch him within two weeks.
Good luck and keep me updated!

Thank you for sharing about where you live and what it's like there. The main problem (other than the electric) is, my husband has a mental illness and he's worried that the constant music will make the problems he has worse. Although he's willing to work with me on it, we just have to find the right kind of music like a soft jazz or somthing. We defanitly need to get the electric cuaght up though. That should be done before the end of this next month.
