When I first got my gliders I got online and started reading. One of the things I read was that Scented Candles are harmful to burn in the same room as a glider.
Is this fact or fiction??

I'm so glad to read this-I miss my candles! Wish I'd known it sooner though I gave away lots of candles when I first got gliders

I wonder wear a myth like that started? I read that BIRDS can be poisoned if you burn an empty teflon pan for too long..it gives off enough toxic fumes to make them sick or kill them...wonder if gliders would be harmed from that

It's fiction for gliders but FACT about birds - if teflon has something cooking in it and the fumes get any where around your birds they CAN and PROBABLY will die - there was a case here in Florida a few yrs ago that a couple was cooking Thanksgiving dinner and NOTHING was buning and the birds were up stairs and then the birds started gasping and even opening windows and getting them outside DID NOT save them - Having owned an aviary in the 90's here in Florida believe me this I know for a fact - my two birds (Umbrella Cockatoo & Double Yellow Headed Amazon) are in the living room and I watch what is being cooked very carefully - sorry to go on like this -
THE END

Wow - I am so glad to hear this! I burn scented candles very rarely & I only do it on the other end of my apartment from the gliders - in the kitchen, the gliders are 3 rooms away, in the bedroom & I always close their door because I've been so paranoid! I am so glad I can do it more often and not have to worry so much! Thank you!!

It's fiction for gliders but FACT about birds - if teflon has something cooking in it and the fumes get any where around your birds they CAN and PROBABLY will die... Actually teflon is dangerous to small animals too. We had a thread going awhile back and a lot of us looked up the info. Even a lot of the bird sites say that teflon fumes are just as toxic to small animals as it is to birds. But you have ot get the pan screaming hot without anything in it for it to do damage. So DO NOT PREHEAT YOUR NONSTICK SKILLETS ladies and gents! I can't remember who asked about the wickless candles or burners... the reason there is contraversy is the FLAME itself is a danger if you have gliders out playing. Common sense would tell you to blow out any flame before setting the critters loose... LOL But we're all smart enough to know that here aren't we?

Interesting reading all over the web about toxins emitted and soot put off by burning candles. I personally stopped burning them after reading here to stop but had heard of people having trouble with them prior to it. http://www.puraira.com/sitePages/?section=10&page=76http://www.baileyeng.com/black_soot_deposition.htmhttp://web.ksl.com/dump/news/cc/series/candepa.htmhttp://ecoble.com/2008/10/10/scented-candles-the-toxic-health-risks/http://www.anapsid.org/cnd/mcs/candles.htmlhttp://www.housekeepingchannel.com/a_528-Candles__Are_They_Good_for_Your_Indoor_AirFor all those who are candle burning I am very interested in info that there are not toxins and soot problems from the candles. I also would enjoy my smelly foo-foo stuff but at this point am not satisfied that they are safe.

I don't have any "facts" or "proof" to give except for my own experience. I have had gliders for 10 years and have burned scented candles in their presence throughout that entire time. I have never had a glider get sick or react in any way to being in a room with scented candles (lit or unlit). As for brands, I have used a variety of them over the years, including the newer scented candles available from Glad & Renuzit. Still, not a problem. Proof enough for me!!! Thanks Suz!!!

Thought id just give my 2 cents. Alot of those negative articles are put out by people selling natural products like those effusion lamps.
But just like the saying goes to much of anything will kill you. I'm sure if you lived in a 2x2 box and lit candles non stop in it that might kill you.
But people have been lighting candles around children and small pets for years and id think most have not seen ill affects.

Last night I purchased a new brand of candle at our Home & Garden show, called Mia Bella Candles. I talked at length with the lady who said these candles are even approved by bird people. They are made of natural vegetable oil. They burn almost virtually sootless. If you would spill the wax you can clean it up with soap & water. I told her my concerns with gliders & birds. Haven't tried it yet but we will see. Guess we'll see if she was correct. I'll keep people updated. I'm glad I can burn candles in other rooms now.

Sao is the same way. You can clean it with soap and water. Most paper core wicks are "self trimming" meaning they form the ball on the tip that you knock off or trim, but I don't have any soot problems with soy, it paraffin that ruined my walls..lol I never leave a canle burning if a glider is "loose". I have never had any issues with candles, thank god! I Love them!!!
