Can you take a picture? If it is a baby mouse, I'm guessing the parents are somewhere in your home. If the baby is alive but lethargic, you probably will want to take it to a vet.

I encourage you to register so you can take full advantage of the board (posting in all the forums). It's fast, and it's free! thumb

this is how I found our first baby glider when she came out of pouch
Waqs your glider pregnant? You need to go to the petstore or walmart and get some Esbilac puppy or kitten formula, but first hold in your hands and get warm, give a dab of honey or karo syrup on tongue (a DAb only)

i think she is talking about a baby glider. I emailed her and asked for a phone number. Any further emergency advice other than getting glucose up, baby warm and trying to find out if her glider was pregnant? first?

ok just talked on the phone with her. a breeder gave her mom and unneutered son and said it was no big deal. I have her going to get esbilac, she is actually here in town with me.

Here's Suz page on Hand Raising A Joey. I don't know if this will be necessary or if the mother will take the joey back and care for it. Sorry, I have no experience with babies. worried

Please let us know how things are going.

Wow..that must have been a shocker!!

I guess the mom isn't interested in the joey? Would she take it back?

Good thing she's in the same town as you Beth...she must be pretty overwhelmed with that little surprise!!

i am sooo glad she was in memphis- she even stopped by to get formula. its warm and eating, now sleeping. a bit dehydrated but not yellow at all. its kind of a little miracle if it makes it- we had my male neutered and lost our only joey 2 days oop, so it'd be kind of wonderful for me if it makes it.

Definitely keep the baby warm, and it will need to be fed frequently. In addition to Suz's site, here are a couple of newsletters with information that might help you:

Hand Rearing Orphaned / Abandoned Joeys - Part I
Hand Rearing Orphaned / Abandoned Joeys - Part II

Ideally you can put the joey back with the parents, but if the momma rejects it, you will need to either try to hand raise it, or supplement feed if the parents will care for it a bit.

Right now it's to early to determine this little ones outcome.
Many have survived under these circumstances, so all we can do is put this sweet little angle in God's hands and do what needs to be done to help him/her.
Your doing great, and we are so happy that your there to help.
I'm sure your husband will hold a specialness towards your kindness and love.

Since this little joey is in excellent hands right now with Beth, I'm going to move this into Breeding & Babies.

Hey beth I have hand raised joeys so if you have any questions I will be glad to help wish you were closer I would offer to babysit and spell you so you could get some sleep I know how hard it is to hand feed little ones. Keep it warm most use an incubator but I always kept the baby on me as much as possible and used my body heat. To say the least I was extremely sleep deprived alot. But I am more than willing to help any way I can if you want to pm me I can send you my phone number and you can call any time.

Bless his little heart! and yours!!!!
I really can't tell you for sure how premature he is, but from what your describing I'd say about 2 weeks.

Is the baby furred by chance? You need a digital scale so you can monitor his weight. Weight will help determine how much to feed and how far apart the feedings should be.

If pink or gray colored skin (no fur)... the odds may be stacked against him for surviving.

Pictures of the wee one are needed to tell how far along he is.

Good Luck.

Oh my goodness! It's so tiny! :o It's truely a miracle that it's still alive!

If he makes it(I'm keeping my fingers and toes crossed for him!) then that's going to be a very special boy and I'll bet he'll be the best bra baby ever! smile

i hope she does, she's a super trooper. I have always had a way with bottle babies but man this is a challenge. shes like a little fetus. but she is so strong, its unreal. if she makes it shes never gonna move out of my bra. except for three hours shes been in there the whole time so far.

She's tiny and beautiful! That she made it thru the night shows her strength and determination! And YOURS! Best wishes for this little miracle. Please, keep us updated as much as possible. I would take pics every day or two to document her growth and progress. What an amazing photo album that will be!

It's hard to say, my feeling is at this point if she is getting all the proper nutrients, pottying normally, and is developing normally she has a great chance without problems.
Were you able to get a weight on her? If you can, try and start weighing her to make sure she is gaining weight.

I don't have a digital scale, just postal. I will try to find one though.

On a WOO-HOO note, we have hit the 24 hour mark since I got her!!!!! AND... She just celebrated that by crawling out of my bra and onto the neck of my tshirt (so at least she's a little hercules).

in for long night #2...

dance WOW now that's amazing! It sounds to me like she is a determined little angel! wink

Her stools should start to become a little firmer within a few more days. I'm not sure about the color though. I know that while infants are nursing, their stools are runny and have a yellowish/orangish tinge.

your doing great beth yes the stools will be kinda runny and yellowish orange in color. I kept my babies in my bra also I just couldn't put them in the incubator without worrying. sounds like you are doing a super job with this little one. I do agree she seems to be about 2 weeks early but seems to be a fighter.

My goodness... that is a really early baby. She looks to be three weeks or so of being able to come oop.

My bet is the wee one weighs in at 5 grams.

You really need to purchase a Digital Scale so you can monitor the baby's weight. If baby is not gaining weight in five to seven days... then you need to move the feedings closer together. Feedings too small or spaced to far apart... baby will be slow in growing and also is the reason they become dehydrated.

If possible, I suggest you find another experienced person who has handfed babies to help you. Without help... do not know how you yourself will survive with no sleep for almost six weeks or so with feedings so close together.

Handfeeding every two hours for three weeks is horrible. Cannot even imagine doing it 45 min apart for three weeks and then another three weeks every two hours.

I agree with Judie, definately find a back-up in case you get too worn out and need a break for a night.

I had to handraise 2 premie kittens and fed them every 1-2 hours and it KILLED me. I didn't dare trust anyone else though because I was paranoid that because they were so small and premature(only weighed an ounce!) that they'd die if not properly cared for. I used to sleep with them at my side so they'd wake my up if they got hungry early.

It was extremely stressful, but SO worth it! I'd do it again in a heartbeat. wink I'm sure you'd do the same with your new little joye. smile

- Bulletin- We've hit the 48 hr mark with me, so she now gets her name- Sprout sound good? She is also getting stronger! I have more pics that I'll post in a few on www.thegliderpouch.zoomshare.com . As for the above posts-

i've done raccoons, puppies, kittens and squirrels (i think thats it) from day one or two, which is not at all fun sleepwise, but if you guys are right and she is 2-3 weeks pre-oop, then this is gonna be a long haul.

Ya know whats funny is i worked at a vet and my husband works with mice (he studies genetics) , so I know non glider people who could help, but i am so nervous because she's hard to feed without getting her nose.

That said- if anyone knows someone who is actually exp. with glider joeys being hand raised in the memphis area, I wouldnt mind having the # on standby at all. Goin for night 3!!!

That's an understatement. :\ I gave them to their new owner a day before they turned 6 weeks old because I knew if I kept them any longer I wouldn't be able to part with them. They were already eating solid food and using the litterbox, so I knew it was time. frown

I can only imagine the bond you're going to form with this little girl. mlove

There's a guy I met today who fussed over a joey so much when she was first OOP that now she refuses to live with any other glider, much less mate! She's a platinum, so he was hoping to set her up with a mate, but she ONLY wants to be with her human. It's cute, lol.

Is there another site to post the pictures to that doesn't bring them up so tiny or so big? I know you are exhausted, maybe you could email them to someone that can post them for you. I would love to see Sprout up close with out the blurriness.

Great job!! thumb

my skeptical hubby who has tons of experience with small animal development is WAY shocked...lol. to be honest I am too, but man she is a trooper.

She's gonna be a fuzzy barnacle to me if she hangs in there.

Beth - you can send me the pics if you want. I'll upload them for you - but won't be able to get to it until this evening. I'm selfish - I just want to see them!

I'm so impressed with this little barnacle! And with her very good mommy!

ok. sorry I have not updated since this morning. Sprout passed away this afternoon. I took her out of my bra to feed her and her breathing was labored and she wasnt as active, I tried to do what I could, but she died pretty quickly.

I am feeling very baby-less right now... against my best efforts I started to get hopeful about Sprout and very happy with the idea of having another baby to bond with. (Smudge is the active curious(not as cuddly) type and my male was an adult rescue so he's not bonded with me as much as she is).

I want to thank everyone for the amazing support you all gave me. It really helped me get through 4 stressful days. You guys are awesome. smile

Beth - I'm so very sorry for your loss.

I know you must be so sad. Big Hugs!

She was a brave little fighter, and she knew love.

thanks, I tried to keep expectations realistic but at the same time after 4 days I started to be tiny bit hopeful, she was very very cute and a miracle in the first place.

I think it's a bit harder because 2 months ago my Smudge lost our first joey right after I neutered Darby, and I was there when she died 2 days oop. I got very attached to the idea of a baby then too- [censored] maternal instincts. lol.

My heart goes out to you Beth...just having her for this short of a time doesn't make it any easier. It's probably harder. We were all pulling for her, but we know she'll be waiting for us across the rainbow bridge. angel

Beth, My heart is with you!! I was dreading the awful news.
But knowing that someone so sweet and caring had her in their care makes it a little easier. She had the best care that I could provide for her. If you need a sitter for the babies im so here i have a lot more experience with them,Im sure your are in extreme need of sleep. Im glad i found someone like you to give sprout a chance. With my seven children, four dogs, cat, ferret, and two suggies,I wounldnt had a fighting chance to do all you did for her,she and you will always hold a special place in my heart!!

I am so sorry that little Sprout didn't make it, but I wanted to take the opportunity to say how proud I am to be a part of this community! Look at all the advice, assistance, support, praise and prayers that were sent out for Beth and this tiny little baby. I'm so glad I found this place - what a fantastic group of people to be a part of!

Cindy, Wife to Dee and Mom to:
two beautiful daughters, Kendall & Reagan,
one handsome son, Dee IV,
one silly American Eskimo, Jasmine,
and our four gliders, the "big kids", aka Bella & Beau, and "the babies" Kandy & Kane, from Cora!

thank you guys, I am just amazed (but not suprised) at how supportive this group of people are.

And Christina- if I'd seen your offer yesterday I probably would have taken you up on it, lol. I slept till noon today and think I may be caught up.
Do let me know if the second baby gets rejected, as strong as Sprout was soooo early, and as attached as I got- I would be happy to hand raise the sib with no reservations at all if mamma rejects her too. The longer she stays in pouch the better chance she probably has too, and if she (or he) is anything like little Sprout it'll be a strong little kiddo. 901 315 6945

love to all-
