I'd have to agree in saying I prefer the pointy nose babies.. While the link with pics was cute, I don't think I'd buy one just cause of the problems that could arise later on.

aww, i have 2 little guys. one has a 'normal' pointy nose and the baby in the famliy has a pug nose. When we got him we didn't know this wasn't normal, we actually picked him out because of it - we thought it was cute...i think my little pug nosed boy is adorable. (but i may be a bit biased as a mommy) *smiles*

his pic was posted earlier in this thread.

Cute smile I think it's cute that they look different.. but personally I'm not one for smushed face animals. Don't know what it is lol, they're cute when they're someone else's animals but I'm not into owning them.

My baby Nahla had a little pug nose. Sadly our vet said she had breathing and respiratory problems, and she passed away a little fighter.

I was told it was a genetic abnormality, and there was really no treatment for it. Two fingers on her back feet were fused together, and during the necropsy we found that her little lungs didn't develop as fast as they should have.

I'm not sure it's fully related to the pug nose, but she did sneeze a lot and it was normal to her. frown

The fused toes on the back feet is normal - the fused toes are the ones they use to groom themselves. All gliders have these.

I did see the fused toes on my other gliders, however hers were very tiny in proportion to theirs.

I know I still have a lot to learn about them though. smile

I have several of the "short faced" gliders. Their face looks a little rounder than the "pointy face" gliders I have. They've never had any problems. I don't consider them to be pug nosed. I've seen so many of these "short faced" gliders, I think it's just the way these are normally meant to be.

There is a difference between short faced and pug nosed. Many of mine have the shorter more round faces but are not "pug nosed".

Judge not until you have walked in their shoes and lived their lives. What you see online is only part of the story.

I think I have the short faced then, not the pug nosed.

You can't mistake the pug-nosed gliders...honestly, I couldn't believe it when I first saw one! Very different, indeed!

This is a syndrome called Brachycephaly or brachycephalic "flat head syndrome" common in Down Syndrome. It is when the coronal suture fuses prematurely, causing a shortened front to back diameter of the skull. The coronal suture is the joint that unites the frontal bone with the two parietal bones of the skull. The parietal bones form the top and sides of the skull.

It is used to describe a "normal" developmentally type of skull with a high cephalic index ie the snub nosed breeds of dogs and cats.

Basically its a birth defect and we now have "normal" dogs and cats like this because WE as humans purposely bred for that feature. I agree with NOT breeding these types of gliders. It seems some are not living very long anyways.

I wouldn't want to breed them either to get that trait. I am glad to know exactly what it is though.
