Ok I know this sounds silly after all the joeys born here, but Mist's twins are over a week overdue and I have never seen more of them than this. ( see pix ) Last time I had a joey this late, it was a single, and her tail was permanently kinked from the vertabra growning crooked IP. Some of you may remember her as "Lilo's overcooked girl" So now look at the hair and the tail size of this joey, there are two in there somewhere, and please let me know if mom's pouch is going to split or if those two are just planning on hanging out in there til college?

Seriously, can a joey get stuck? Do I need to get to the vet and "pop" them out? He closes in 2 hours and I hate to make him come back in for one of my weird suggie calls.

BTW: Mist is 2 yrs old and these are her first joeys.

LOL how funny! (not the worry part...)
I don't THINK joeys can get stuck.. I know that I had a pair of really shy ones who I never saw just like this for a very long time... I only knew they were out because I caught her stuffing the babies in her pouch(even though they were much too big) when I snuck up on her once.

I really don't know though.
How strange!

Wow, yeah I would say they were ready to come out a while ago lol. If the female was extremely tame and let me check her out I would wash my hands REALLY well and then gently see if I could just move the pouch opening a little bit and see if I could see the Joeys mouths. It would help if a second person was holding a flashlight and giving mealies to help keep her still. If the mouths are still attached to the teat then I would leave them. If they are not then you know they are just refusing to come out. In both situations I would call the vet and let him know what I had seen and get his advice before trying to manually get the babies out. Hopefully a more experience member will have more advice for you. This is how I would likely handle the situation but I have never dealt with it before, if there are any members who have they may know a better way. It might just be no big deal and you just have to wait until they are ready, I'm not sure. It might also be that they HAVE come OOP but mom is very overprotective and shoves them back in if there are any disturbances such as you approaching the cage.

You mean there are TWO in there? That looks like a week OOP joey to me! LOL I guess her pouch must just be extra stretchy to be able to hold such well developed joeys liek that. I would be VERY interested to know what these little ones weigh when they finally emerge. And I bet their eyes are open when they do! ROFL

Yes, mom is extremly tame and I have felt the joeys and moved the pouch opening some, they both have moved away from my fingers, so I know they are both still OK. But mom's pouch skin is stetched so tightly that I am afraid it will split or tear if I move them too much. She can barely walk, her back legs don't touch well anymore over the joeys.

It's amazing how they can still fit the little OOP joeys IP. My joeys will be OOP a week tomorrow, and I know mama can still fit them both IP. She mostly keeps them out, but I've seen her shove them in as well.

That is one of the reasons I am worried, all my moms will lay their joeys out on their tummys during the day while they nap before they officially come OOP, to rest their pouches I think and so the little ones can breath. I check on Mist several times a day and at night and have never seen the joeys any farther out than these pictures show. worried I never thought she would have joeys, being older should have made it easier on both of us. dunno

T-I'm by far an expert when it comes down to determining the correct time for these little ones to remain IP. If your correct about their OOP date and if in fact they have not been out at all, I would bring her in to be looked at to make sure that she and the joeys are ok. If they haven't emerged, my concern would be possible deformity in their limbs, spine etc.

I hope they come out soon!

Have you tried talking to one of the bigger breeders? Like Sheila or Priscilla? they might have had something like this happen before and can offer some advice.

Since your girl is a first-time mom and is 2 years old, then she might just not know what to do or might now be ready to let them out yet.

Also, try shooting Suz a call. She's the joey expert. wink

Have you tried to pop them out? Not remove them from the nipple just pop them out of the pouch so they can have some air and mom a break from them being in there. I have one female who has let me do this when one of her joeys seemed to not be coming out and i was worried but she is very bonded to me and will just lay there while i rub her swollen belly. She will look for me at night to hand the joeys off to me for some mom time lol.

You can clearly see the hair and they are ready to come out. If you are worried i would pop them out. If they are not ready they will stay on the nipple and go back in but they look ready.

Please note this is what id do in the situation and i do not recomend doing this in every situation or glider.

I took her in, but my vet is out of town. The vet that was there had not seen suggies before. We tried massaging her tummy and she clamped down tight and her whole pouch closed up. He was not comfortable giving her anything to relax her with the joeys still nursing. I told him that if he was "alittle" uncomfortable, then I was totally uncomfortable. He has a call in with an exotic vet in SD, but they were closed by the time he called. He said that mom doesn't seem to be in destress and the joeys are moving IP, so we will see what the specialist says tomorrow.
worried

I was wondering about massaging a tiny bit of olive oil on her pouch skin????

How do you get them to pop out? They are all the way back to her back bone, we couldn't feel anywhere we could push gently on one that wouldn't hurt mom. we also couldn't tell where one joey started and the other one stopped. I feel so stupid, I should have done something sooner.

The joeys are Ok, I got one to pop out from pushing from the bottom. Made mom REALLY mad at me, but one of the joeys came out. Only for a second before it ( I hate calling them its, but I didn't get a chance to check the plumbing ) got right back IP. Both are fully IP with only two tails hanging out, but I know they are breathing and the one that did come out seemed to have all it's legs moving at warp speed, so no problems there.

Thanks to everyone on here and LGG for the help and support.

The reason these joeys are in pouch is because of one of two reasons.
I have seen about 1/2 of first time moms keep joeys in longer for up to 5-7 days because they are not relaxed enough to let you view them. I have had the most bonded gliders to me not trust me when it came time to show off their joeys. Sometimes they are also not trusting of their mates or if in a trio, the other partner. That would be another reason for them holding them in the pouch. If they are in this state, they let them out during the day sometimes because their partner is either asleep and they feel it is a safe time to let them out, or they just want to sleep more comfortably.

The second reason is because she does not have enough milk. I have seen babies not detach because they don't ever release themself from the teat because they are not getting enough.
The first reason is the more common of the two.
I would definitely stop trying to see them and let her be. I think in a day or two you will hear them snurf snurfing.

My female has held her babies in as long as 10 days over in fact one set of twins had their eyes open before she let them out. I don't know why she does this but she does I just have to let her do it in her time not mine.

I may not have any experience with joeys but I have to agree with Sheila, it sound like mom has really good hearing and can hear you coming and is stuffing them back in fast.

She is shy about her babies. I have seen it in cats, dogs, horses and all the other little critters I have raised over the years. Hopefully next year I will have my first experience with joeys.

Best Wishes,

I think they actually were stuck, now that they are in new positions, mom seems much more relaxed and is able to get around the cage better. I still have not seen a face or heard a snuffle, so I can't call them OOP quite yet. My little over cooked girl from before came OOP at 22 g and opened her eyes at 2 days. Bet these guys beat that. roflmao

My Carina consistently kept her joeys in pouch for 7-9 days longer than "normal". The joeys were all fine and everything worked out well. I agree with Sheila's comments about the possible reasons why. I also agree about just leaving them alone and letting the mother do her thing. When she's ready the joeys will detach.

Ivory let her first joey cook for way too long. I wasn't worried because it was a single joey, but she did come OOP with an eye already opening. She had open eyes the next day.

Mist finally let go of the twins this morning. I think she didn't really know what to do. Her mom must not have given her "the talk". She was pulling on them to get them outside her pouch and then licking like crazy on their mouths to get them to let go. I was really nervous she was going to hurt them, she was not gentle. I never heard her doing the shimmy shakey dance to get the joeys off. She just licked and pulled til they came off. dunno
But we have two BIG healthy greys, one is a girl and the other I couldn't get to yet for pictures or sex check. I will wait until mom is more comfortable with the whole mom thing until taking them long enough for a weight check. I did get to check the girl's belly and it is nice and full.

Thanks for everything.

Awwwwwwwwwww! Beautiful babies! No wonder mom wanted to hang onto them for so long! I'm betting they're 18-20 grams each!
