When does a joey start regulating its own body... #751295

My joey is 3 weeks oop and I fear that she may get too cold at night while alone in the pouch. I keep her room at 75 degrees but I have been taking her out and holding her after about 15 minutes of being alone. (no dad to help out) At what age does a joey start regulating its own body temperature?

75 degrees is a pretty good temperature, and she is old enough that her fur is all fluffed out, which helps her to keep herself warm. I think it's safe to say that you're out of the real danger zone. I would definitely put a couple 'blankies' in with mom and baby, so when mom comes out at night, baby can still cuddle in with the little fleece blankets. She should be fine. =)

I keep a space heater in my bedroom where my mom and joeys are so if it gets below a certain temp it will kick on.

At 3 weeks out of pouch, she's still not fully regulating her own body temperature, but she's doing better than a newly out of pouch joey would be... To give you a more definitive answer: She will be able to fully regulate her own body temperature by the time she is about 6 weeks out of pouch. Until then, keeping a space heater in the room to keep the room temperature at about 80* would be a good idea.

Thanks Suz! I feel like I've had another baby! It's amazing how attached I have gotten in just 3 weeks and I want to make sure I am doing everything "just right!"

A question came up in a PM to me about this, so I thought I'd better clarify a bit more...

By the time most joeys are about 6 weeks out of pouch, they are able to regulate their own body temperature. However, some joeys can't fully regulate it until they are about 8 weeks oop. Therefore, using an external heat source may be necessary for longer than up to the 6 week point. It varies depending on the individual joey's development. For instance, right now I am hand-raising a joey who will be 7 weeks oop on Saturday. Right now, he is in a 38 gallon Rept with a heating pad under one end of it, in case he gets chilly while in the cage. He continues to use the heating pad while sleeping, so this tells me that he is still not regulating his body temp on his own yet.
