We found the boys dead in their cage and a scorpion wandering around the bottom...I will be having a necropsy done to be sure but this was the most upsetting way to ever lose a glider. I've never seen a scorpion in my house before EVER, let alone in a glider cage in my ROOM! Luckily, my other 3 are still okay. We don't know how it got in there or if they were even aware that it was there or what. I don't know if there was something I could've done to avoid this, but how do you protect against something little and invasive like that? I wanted to post this to make sure everyone is aware of the unthought of dangers that our little guys face. In memory of Cyrus and Lucian

How many of you have thought to spider-proof your glider room? Thanks for all the kind words.
P.S. Phil, it WAS a bark scorp. These are soo common out here its scary, although like I said I've personally only seen about 3 in my 9 years in Az.

Oh my - I'm so sorry and so shocked! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/heartpump.gif" alt="" /> That is horrible - who would ever think of that? I do know of a glider that had a horrible wound from a spider bite, but a scorpion? Cyrus and Lucian will be happy at the Bridge, waiting. I'm so sorry - truly I am. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gliderangel.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/gliderangel.gif" alt="" />

That is terrible. I am also very sorry. I have seen scorpions in my house before, especially around winter <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shakehead.gif" alt="" />, but never thought they could harm a glider. Thank you so much for posting.

I am so sorry!!! What a horrible way to lose your babies. Thank you for posting that, as hard as it is for you. I know I would never have thought about it, and many here wouldn't have either. Scorpions are pretty common here in Texas, but we hardly see them here in town. I am so sorry......my prayers are with you in this painful time. Know that they are waiting for you at the Bridge, and you now have two special little angels to watch over you. May time heal the pain...

so sorry to hear about your loss. that is such a terrible thing to find. i'm sure they went quickly and that you gave them a happy life. my thoughts are with you. so sorry again. there was obviously no way you could have thought the need to safeguard against scorpions, but now that you know they could get it, is there something you can put around the other cages to make sure another doesn't get in their cage? can scorpions climb?

I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I too live in AZ and have never even thought about scorpians. Scooty asked if there was any way to protect the cage from crawling critters and actually there is... I was told this when my son was an infant and in his crib. They say get a glass mason jar or something with steep sides - the bugs and scorpians will not be able to climb up it. If it worked for my baby it will probably our little sugar babies too!

My prayers and sympathies are with you. The loss of a pet is always tragic. Keep comfort in the fact that you will see them again someday.

my deepest symapthies to you. i am very sad indeed. however my biggest worry is the scorpions! are they the poisonous type? do you have kids? be careful! i grew up in a tropical island and we did see a few poisonous scorpions, but one thing the natives of the island used as a repelant was kerosene. rubbing a bit of kersoene around the corners of the wall works as a repelant however the smell is bad! were the gliders out doors??

Dude~

Her post says:

</font><blockquote><font class="small">Quote:</font><hr />

<hr /></blockquote><font class="post">
I would hope that no one on GliderCentral would just leave their gliders outside unattended. And yes, I do believe the scorpions she's talking about are the posionous ones, or else there wouldn't have been such a scare.

Traci~

Once again...I am so sorry. Did you ever get the necroposy results back? And thank you for posting this, although it was hard for you to do for sure. I was considering taking my babies with me to my Grandpa's Ranch in West Texas during the Thanksgiving holiday. Once I read this I decided to leave them with a sitter because there are lots of scorpions out in West Texas.

I'm sorry to hear of your loss and wish I could say something to make it better. I have lost a glider myself and know how bad it is to have it happen.

On the scorp topic all scorps have venom but not many are very toxic at all. There are some in Arizona however that are the hottest in the US and while they usually don't kill humans they aren't to be taken lightly at all. The only US scorp to have killed humans is the Arizona bark scorp and as common as they are in some parts out there I suspect this is what it was. The other native scorps wouldn't pack enough of a punch to do this.

To prevent them getting into cages the best defense is to have slick legs on the cage stand as they don't climb slick surfaces well at all. And for human safety folks living where they are found should always check their shoes before sticking their feet in.

Phil
