Can Gliders Survive Aflatoxin Poisoning?

I am trying to find info on the web about Aflatoxins, and everything I am finding does not look good. I understand that this toxin can cause the liver to shut down - so should a glider be treated for their liver if they have Aflatoxins in their system?

If a Glider gets Aflatoxins, is there any probability of them living through it?

If he's come out of the seizures that is a very good sign. There is always a chance. I posted in the other thread about adding Vit. E. I lost 8 gliders in a week and we were able to pull the others through add extra VitE to their diet.

Just think positive, I know it's hard. But for your sake and his you have to keep up your hope and strength.

Call the Vet and see what he thinks.

I called the Vet and talked to a technician and asked them to add Vitamin E. They said they would check the vet website and see if it seemed like a good option.

By taking an educated guess, I would guess that it is aflatoxins. He was lethargic. Poor appetite for a few days. I'm not sure about the heavy breathing, but that could be an infection or a result of poisoning.

I hope that if it is that, he will get better.

Mine were never lethargic until about an hour before I lost them. They ate and played the night before. No trouble breathing and ate really well. Something to think about.

Hello. I was recently researching a lot of asperergillus mold and aflotoxin. It is a sporous mold so the mold itself is harful both ingested or breathed. It can cause organ failure and respiritory issues and is non-treatable although medical research indicates that a regular diet with veggies like carrots, parsnips, celery and parsley will reduce the carcinogenic effects of aflotoxins in the body. I would reccomend upping these items in diet at least for now as well as what was already reccomended regarding Vit E.

It is possible for a glider to live though it. They may or may not have adverse effects from it, just depends on the severity of the poisoning and how well their body can cope. There are people that carry life long conditions from liver failure and respiritory infections due to aflotoxin poisoning and inhalation of sporous aspergillus mold particles.

I hope the best for your babies and if they pull though for you, I hope they can have a good quality of life. This mold and poisoning is very scary and my thoughts are with you and your babies.

They can live through it, it just depends on how much they ingested. There is a lethal amount, and the amount in their liver, to my knowledge can not be reduced. So a little here, a little there, bam, they're gone. From talking to Dr Tristan about my case, he believes from what I have told him, that 2 of the 3 ate really well one night, the third didn't for whatever reason and didn't get sick. So, it can be ingested in one sitting. This is why it is so important to use all possible care when preparing and storing our food. I'm not saying you didn't, most suggie parents are very careful, and stuff happens anyway.

I've been PMing with Lyss&Remy and another possibility is Botulism. The mealies may have eaten old fruit. I told her to tell the vet about that possibility.
