Is Mieshka's Milk sac hangging out of her pouch???

Is Mieshka's Milk sac hangging out of her pouch??? - 12/05/11 07:14 AM

We have our little girl Mieshka who has been doin a great job raising her first baby glider girls that came OOP 10-21-11. Her first babies that she has ever had was a set of twins. Well while we had her out for a bit tonight my girlfriend Ciara found Mieshka's pouch looking like it does in the pictures.
Can someone please let me know what or if there is anything I can do? Or should it all go back in when her little ones Luna and Nova feed again? I can tell it's full of delicious milk for the little girls.
It's not bleeding. It's just how the pictures look. We just don't want her to get some infection in her pouch.

I know a gliders milk sack can get swollen and cause their nipples to poke out, but I've never seen swelling like this before. BUT, just because I haven't seen it before, doesn't mean it's anything severe. More people should be along shortly with suggestions.

I hope your baby is okay and please keep us posted! :O)

Does it go back inside and look normal? I have a girl that will hang hers out when a joey is too big to stick their head back inside her pouch. If it smells odd, or looks like it's swollen, painful, or it will not go back inside, she may have an inverted pouch, which is caused by some kind of infection, often yeast.

If it happens to be an infection, be very careful about any medications the vet prescribes. Baytril can cause mastitis in nursing females, which can lead to joey rejection or cannibalization.

I took a Clean Sterile Q-Tip from my medical supplies and tried to put it back in but it did not want to go back in it was so full of milk. I just went and checked on Mieshka again and it is still not back in. The Twin girls that she is raising {Luna and Nova} are now a day past 6 weeks OOP and they have started eating the BML that we give to the adults every night at least we have just noticed tonight.

Ok... Every thing is good now. I washed my hands and took Mieshka and tried to put her milk sac back into her pouch with my fingers, and after a little try I was able to get it to go back into her pouch.

I am glad to hear it's back in, but if there is milk to be had, the joeys will drink it. The mother should be slacking off on production now that the joeys are beginning to wean. I would take her in to the vet and get a culture done just in case the teat is swollen or infected. It is very important to do this as soon as possible, pouch infections can get worse very quickly.

Keep an eye on her the first thing I thought of when I saw the picture was that she could have mastitis.

If it keeps popping out or feels warm and is painful to her when you touch it get her to the vet.

As someone who breastfed four children, I recognize mastitis when I see it. At six weeks, the babies won't be nursing nearly as much as they did even 2-3 weeks ago. Does she act like it hurts at all when you put it back in? Is it hot or reddish in color? Mastitis is very painful. If it were me, I'd definitely take her to the vet if she's still like this in the morning.

She didn't seem to mind when I touched it last night getting her out of the cage, it wasn't warm or didn't have any smell to it. Just a little red in color.

But if it's like that in the morning still I will definitely take her in. Do they just swab to check for mastitis or how do they do that?

That's what I was thinking. I've seen the swollen nipple on my Stella. She pulled it out and fixed it her self. I was amazed. shock

I have heard of female gliders drinking their own milk to relieve engorgement. I've not experienced that with any of my gliders so I can't say from personal observation. I hope she's ok in the morning and if she isn't, I'm glad you're taking her to the vet!

Just checked on her before bed, its all wrinkled up and barely hanging out anymore... ? It's not warm at all and she didn't seem in pain after I checked on her.

I guess we'll have to see how tomorrow pans out for her!

How is she doing this morning? Last night sounded pretty darned good! She may have taken care of the engorgement on her own, as I've heard of. Extra nutrition for her!

She seemed fine this morning when I peaked in on her. I'll have to get a pic of it later tonight. It looks like its all shriveled up and wrinkly but still kinda looks like theres so much skin or whatever that it won't fit back in...? dunno Don't know how to explain it, lol.

Called the vet and she goes in tomorrow if anything. Still wish I could wait until Friday when the normal vet is in but if there is any chance of infection I don't want to wait.

That's what my girl did. I didn't want anyone to think she was strange if I said it. Thanks Connie

Well the vet we took her to has "never seen anything like this before." But I don't know how well he knows sugar gliders since our normal vet was out. frown Anyways, we have a weeks worth of antibiotics for her so I hope it all goes good for her!

She is doing awesome!! All that sticks out now is her nipple. She hates the antibiotics but the bf gives them to her so she's loving on me. smile Back to her normal, momma, self and teaching her babies all types of daredevil ways. shakehead
