Joey At A Pet Store - 07/06/18 04:31 PM

Hey peeps, I saw a small little joey at a pet store ALONE, NO MOM, NO FRIENDS. I want to rescue it from the pet store by getting it and raising it. Need info on how to tell the age, and when I know it's age, I know what to feed it. HELP GUYS PLEASE! Thanks in advance!

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/06/18 09:15 PM

Did you ask the people at the pet store how old the joey is? I would also ask where the parents are.

Is the joey's tail fully furred out and fluffy? Ask them what they are feeding the joey? Male or female? How long have they had the joey in the store? Can you get a photo to post here?

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/07/18 06:09 AM

I'm going to a mall to get a larger cage for my suggies now. After I'll ask the pet store for info. From what I remember the joey looks like a miniature sugar glider but the body seems to not have that much fur. I'll get a picture on my phone and export it onto my laptop to post here. Thanks! (Should I get the joey first?)

We have a change of plans. Tomorrow I'll be getting the joey AND the answers to the questions. Will be posting a picture and the answers to the questions here.

Any update on this little joey? Were you able to get him/her?

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/13/18 08:55 AM

Great news, we were able to get it. Gender unknown for now and letting it settle in. On a weekend I'll start bonding. When my home's WiFi is fixed, I'll post some Questions with answers and a picture.

Thanks!

Awesome!! It's a good idea to let them get used to their surroundings, new sights and smells.

Can't wait to see pics!

Good news. Cannot wait to hear all about him/her and see that little face.

That's great. Glad you were able to give him/her a home. Looking forward to pics and hearing more.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/14/18 10:40 AM

Got good news and slightly bad news. The bad news is that I have absolutely no idea on how to transfer my phone's pictures to my laptop. Good news is that my home's WiFi is fixed and I should be able to post the 'Q and A' here later today. Thanks for sticking around guys!

If you have email on your phone, send pics to yourself and open on laptop. You will need an internet storage like photo bucket or dropbox in order to share pics.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/16/18 07:57 AM

I don't have Photo Bucket or Dropbox, but I'll still try to upload a picture of the joey here. Most likely going to be a crabbing picture. XD

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/16/18 08:02 AM

Also I need some tips on how to bond with this little joey... it crabs A TON. I'm also scared of it's bite hurting me. A lot of people say that glider bites don't hurt that much and it's kinda true, but Luna's bite hurts quite a bit so I'm a little scared to interact with the joey. I once put it in a SAMLA from ikea and it crabbed quite a few times then fell asleep in a corner. I covered it with a glove I 'scented' and tried to pet it. It kinda worked. It then woke up and slept in another corner on top of another glove. Again, I used the other glove to cover it and tried to pet it. It woke up a few minutes later and started crabbing so I put it in it's pouch and hung the pouch back it it's cage... I'm now unsure of what to do. Tips?

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/16/18 09:24 AM

Bonding will be a slow process. Spending time with him will help. You can talk, or read to him. Or sing songs, like slow soft songs. I still sing baby lullabies to mine. Will he take food or treats from you hand yet?

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/17/18 03:36 AM

I dont know if this worked but I have been lucky with bonding. I use the glider scent at Suncoast. I spray a bit on my hand before placing in the pouch. I will say that if you bend your finger and are bitten, it hurts less-from experience! smile

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/17/18 08:11 AM

Haven't tried that yet. I'll try to give Starlight a few fruit drops from my hands.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/17/18 08:11 AM

Ok, I'll try out the 'bending your fingers' trick!
Posted By: sugarfluff

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/17/18 08:58 PM

I never tried the spray but have heard of several people who had success with it.

Buttercup was /is the crabbiest of my trio she is also the youngest, so maybe it a youngling thing. She is always more crab than bite. We just kept her in a bonding pouch a lot in the beginning and sented up her cage with our worn t-shirts. We got lucky with her it didn't take too long for her to start liking/accepting us.

But yes some of their bites do hurt quite a bit and I was fearful as well for a while. As time passed I realized that most of the bites are just uncomfortable and not real painful. That helped me get over that fear. I guess you just have to get nipped enough to overcome it.

Try placing your fist inside the bonding pouch and just hang out with him while watching tv or something. It will help expose him to your scent while getting use to being around hands. If he does bite, I agree that with bent fingers it hurts less.

Sing, talk sweet, keep introducing your scent, give treats and I'd say most importantly be patient. Patience is the key, you're a big ole giant to him and he has to learn you mean no harm. Keep it up and good luck!

The spray did nothing for mine... I think they actually liked the taste o.0 Mine are weird like that, though.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/22/18 08:36 AM

Guyssss got a small update!! Starlight is starting to take Fruit Drops from my finger! This was only today though, and she is quite reluctant. I'll be posting updates here.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/22/18 09:24 PM

It's a start. She may surprise you! smile

It takes a bit for them to figure out what to do.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/23/18 08:03 AM

For the next month or so I'll be focusing on taming little Starlight. I'll still post some updates here and there, but I probably won't be on GliderCENTRAL often. Thanks for all the help you guys gave me. smile

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/23/18 10:13 AM

Ok got another teeny tiny update. Starlight seems to be a little more excited when I come to her cage to give her yoggies. Also I experienced a joey bite... Because she thought my fingers are the yoggies... XD

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/23/18 02:06 PM

This will probably happened a lot, mine her confused after a few treats since my fingers smell like it (& are also pasty white, lol).

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/23/18 03:17 PM

Looking forward to updates!

Stewie still thinks my fingers are big pine nuts. He's not a big fan of yogies yet.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/25/18 11:10 AM

Update time! Today when I went to feed Starlight his/her 2nd Daily taming yogurt drop, she started to kinda climb on my hand but not fully, also she kept licking me today XD.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/25/18 01:59 PM

That is progress!

Ive had Stewie for almost 8 weeks. And he has only come around in the last week. He's still learning about us.

I guess personality does matter.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/28/18 11:29 AM

Another quick update. I tried to take Starlight out of his/her pouch (she stays in it 24/7 -_-) and he/she jumped back into the safety of his/her carrot pouch. What should I do? I'm planning on putting him/her back into the SÄMLA to bond again.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/28/18 06:48 PM

What time of day are you trying this?

Are the lights on and bright?
Posted By: Hutch

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 07/30/18 03:49 AM

A couple of my were like that at first. I took them to a small, dark room with a red light for me, took them out of the pouch, & put it out of reach. I always had treats ready to make this a positive experience & let them do their own thing. Once they began to act tired I put their pouch within reach again. It helped some. They at least realized it was safe out there & good things came from me smile

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/03/18 05:31 PM

Sometimes it's dark, sometimes it's bright. Either way Starlight will jump back in and apparently she poops in her pouch, unlike other suggies...
Posted By: ArcherMylin

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/03/18 05:35 PM

What I do is I use 1 yogurt drop for a lure, then when Starlight took the bait, I bring her farther from the pouch, then let her eat the yoggie. After I bring her on the floor, then up on a branch. Then she'll climb to her pouch and I give her the last yoggie.

Ok guys Starlight MIGHT be a boy. I can see a super tiny bald spot on his or her head... I'm still not 100 percent certain, but I'll update!

Check out the link below to help determine if you have a boy/girl.

Com'on Karen, this is the modern age... you're not suppose to force identities on young gliders like that.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/10/18 02:28 PM

Ok guys idk why but if Starlight is a boy I feel like breeding Luna and Starlight... Of course, I won't do it because I am only 11 years old...

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/11/18 05:36 AM

Another update. I've been taking out a piece of fabric from Lun's cage and putting it in Star's pouch. Today I took out starlight's pouch and put it NEAR Luna's cage where she was climbing. They were doing ok until Star crabbed and scared Luna... I immediately hung Star's pouch in his/her cage and fed Luna about 2-3 yoggies to calm her down and same for Starlight. Oh well, for the next few months I'll pouch swap and cage swap until Starlight is all grown up
Posted By: KarenE

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/11/18 02:21 PM

Good idea. Wouldn't rush the introductions, especially since Star is still getting to know the surroundings and might be a little fragile considering where he came from.
Posted By: ArcherMylin

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/13/18 01:58 AM

True, he or she almost died by being picked up by the tail when we first got Starlight ohwell
Posted By: ArcherMylin

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/16/18 07:43 AM

k seems like Starlight has been more willing to get out of her pouch... I caught her sleeping with a store-bought suggie blanket on the cage floor. I also put a toy from Luna's cage into Starlight's for a few days.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/29/18 02:41 PM

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOk I am officialy announcing that I switched their (Lun and Star) pouches and they are fine with it. Also when I took Starlight out for a little while like what I always do she JUMPED TO LUNA'S CAGE!!!! Star began 'nipping' at Lun's 'hands'... and when I was trying to get Starlight back into her cage she climbed to the back of Lun's cage and Luna began doing THE SAME THING ('nipping' Starlight's 'hands')!!! So I was freaking out and tried to get Star... Crabbed, scared the crabbiness out of Luna and climbed to the top of Luna's cage. Last resort out of sheer terror of both of their safety, I gently 'grabbed' Starlight and secured her with both of my hands (GENTLY!!) and put her in her cage. PHEW... btw this whole event was before I switched their pouches.. shakehead

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 08/29/18 03:04 PM

I am sure you were scared to death. I sure would have been, but you managed the situation well with no damage done to either one of them.

They still need more time, so continue with the pouch switching which will help tremendously.

Keep up the good work and definitely keep us posted on the progress.

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 09/09/18 09:46 AM

She has a pink spot where she produces faeces and urine, no 'pom-pom' and probably not a neutered male (I say this because i dont think the pet shop where i got her from knows what neutering is let alone good care).

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 09/24/18 07:50 AM

I switched their pouches again a few days ago. I think they are almost ready for cage switching. I also put the cages side-by-side so that they can interact. However, I'm waiting for Starlight to grow up before the actual introduction with Luna.
Posted By: ArcherMylin

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 10/29/18 11:38 AM

Finally, I have another update for you guys! I have taken Starlight and Luna out a couple of times in a container (obviously supervised), and they were getting along fine.. however I won't let them live together until Starlight is fully grown. Also, a bald spot is becoming more and more obvious on Starlight's head so I'm now confident that Starlight's a boy, which means I have to neuter him when he's grown up.
Posted By: ArcherMylin

Re: Joey At A Pet Store - 10/29/18 11:40 AM

Also take note the container I'm using has the minimum floor space for a hamster (450sqinches). It's one of the IKEA SAMLAs.
