Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser

Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/29/04 02:11 PM

I went to start cleaning my cage this morning and noticed that I was out of disposable sponges (you know, the ones that come pre-soaped for one time usage...). Anyways, while I was looking for a sponge, I found a package of Magic Erasers, so I decided to try those. OH MY GOD! They are awesome! With just a little bit of water, every thing just scrubbed off. My cage is big, it's 2 cages in one and has an over all size of 3 x 3 x 6 (soon to be 1.5 x 3 x 6, it's just too big right now...). I use a steam cleaner once a week and break it down once a month to scrub it. I thought that my cage was pretty clean. I was wrong. The water coming off of the cage when I was scrubbing it with the magic eraser was just nasty and you could see a huge difference on the cage itself. It went from being a kind of off white color to a blue-white color. I'm going to start using it ever week when I clean cages...

Oh Leyna! I am SO glad to hear someone talk about these Magic Sponges! Oh you dont even know!
I have been looking for one/a package of them for a few weeks now... apparently my local grocery stores are out of them for now.
Ive heard very good things about them though and have been dying to try one... matter of fact, when asked what I wanted for Christmas... I said "Magic Sponges please". (leave it to me to ask for cleaning sponges for Christmas - didnt get any though, I dont think my family took me seriously...LOL).
I wanted them to do household cleaning, I never even thought about how well they might work on cages!
(Off topic a little... Im assuming they work really well on other surfaces? Have you had any problem with them scrubbing paint off walls or anything like that?)

Im glad you posted this!

I've used them on my cages, my shower, and my counters so far, that's all. They aren't really abrasive, so I don't think they would harm paint. They do make your hands feel all funky after a while because you can feel the little crumblies on your skin...

Another great use for them...GREAT at getting the BML off walls that the little ones manage to get out of the glider kitchen.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/29/04 05:35 PM

YES!! They work on walls and don't take the paint off. I have used them all over my house. Thanks for the tip on the cage. I'll try that next. Right after I try the wall BML!!

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/29/04 06:04 PM

Last summer when I painted my living room floor, I used these sponges to clean the "splatter" from the walls and baseboards (I have YET to figure out how hubby got paint spatter 5 feet ABOVE the floor!). They took the extra paint right off the walls and baseboard but it did not remove the original painted surface (I hope that makes sense).

I love these things!!! Now I'll have to try them on the cage.... what a wonderful invention!

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/29/04 06:35 PM

Druin,
Was the paint still wet when you wiped it off the walls? Otherwise I don't understand how it could take off unwanted paint but not harm painted walls

Different kinds of paint maybe? If so, then it may be that it's safe for some paints and not others?

Those erasers are awesome. It cleans crayons off the walls, finger prints, food splaters and so much more. I never gave it a thought though to try it on the cage. I will have to try that out.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/30/04 02:37 PM

Be careful with the magic eraser! There are some pretty harsh chemicals in them! When you use them, be sure to get ALL the left over residue off by wiping AGAIN with a clean rag and HOT water!

My son recently dyed his hair black and the dye stained his face. NOTHING would take the stain off.........so we tried the magic eraser.BAD IDEA. With just a wipe or two, it started to sting the skin on his neck and cheek and left a NASTY rash for a week! I don't know how toxic these things are..........just be careful to rinse thoroughly!

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 12/31/04 08:15 AM

I could have sworn it said non-toxic on the box... Are you sure you're talking about the same thing? I used my bare hands and I have very sensitive skin. I didn't have any reaction what so ever... Also, it doesn't drain off any chemicals. No fizzing, bubbling, foam, etc.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/01/05 06:30 PM

I'm really not sure what's in them. They seem to be mild enough for hands and they do clean things VERY well....I really DO swear by them and their cleaning power. I was just saying be careful because of what they did to my sons skin.......I can't explain it but it really was a nasty rash!

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/01/05 06:56 PM

After I read this post I got really excited to use my Magic Eraser sponges on the cage. I bought them to use on the seat of my car where dye from my jeans rubbed off and stained it. Well, I wasn't that thrilled with how it worked on the cage. Yes, it got food and other 'stuff' off pretty easily but I guess I just prefer the old fashioned way . It did work wonders on my wall, though! I used it then scrubbed it down with my "solution", and then rinsed. It took me longer than usual, but I was definitely pleased by how it removed everything and scrubbing wasn't so much scrubbing as wiping down everything.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/01/05 07:33 PM

SherryZ... it may not have been the magic eraser that caused the skin reaction in your son. The following link is an article on PPD, also known as black henna (NOT to be confused with natural plant henna!). This stuff is also found in some hair dyes and has been known to be lethal. If the hair dye colored your son's skin, it probably had PPD in it. Before I actually post the url for the webpage, be forewarned that the images of allergic reaction are very graphic, so if you have a weak stomach, please don't visit this site. http://www.hennapage.com/henna/ppd/index.html
Just be happy that the only reaction your son had was a rash.

SouthernBell, it may have something to do with the cage matterial too. I have vinal coated wireshelving cages... It worked great on them, much better than anything else I've used so far and I didn't have to worry about the magic erraser damagine the vimal coating.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/01/05 08:36 PM

Hmmm, good point. This particular cage is powder coated. My other cage is PVC coated, so I'll try it on that one when I get back to school

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/03/05 04:38 AM

I guess my question would be is it safe for the babies,They do spend alot of time grooming and licking the wire. Is it non toxic. Yes it may clean well but what about what the babies are putting in there bodies? Just a question, never used the stuff but always looking for things to make my life easier.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/03/05 12:14 PM

I need to buy some more so I can have a box to post pictures of for you all... I rinse my cage down to prevent any injestion of chemicals/cleaning products.

"They do spend alot of time grooming and licking the wire."

Um... That's not what I would consider a normal behavior. What is your cage made out of? Also, what diet do you feed. A lot of times when animals are missing thing nutritional, they get odd cravings. Also, some metals have a taste that appeals to animals. Most expossed metals aren't recommended for glider cages.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/03/05 03:07 PM

I did not mean they were licking the cage. I meant licking and grooming themselves and there fur and paws are touching the wire, therefore they are ingesting what is on the cage.

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/10/05 06:58 PM

I would never use cleaning products in my gliders cages! Even if it does say 'non-toxic' on the package, there are obviously chemicals in the sponges or they wouldn't clean the way they do. I spray the cage down with just plain water, let it sit for about 5-10 minutes and wipe it clean. Mind you, my cage is made out of plexiglass, not wire. I found with the wire cages, the urine always got outside the cage. They love the plexiglass cage! Here's a picture of it. My husband made it for them. The drawer on the bottom slides out and makes it very easy to clean. My little guys love the plastic leaves I've got on the top of the cage. They get new toys & brightly colored things in their cage all the time...

That cage is very pretty. Whats the deal ont he bottom? A little travel cage or something?

Re: Mr. Clean's Magic Eraser - 01/11/05 04:01 AM

Thanx! The little cage on the bottom is just to hold toys that clip onto wire cages, and their water bottle clips onto it. They run around it, climb all over it, in and out, it's cute. I haven't been able to find a good way to hang the water bottle in the plexiglass cage. The suction cup holders don't work, this does, for now anyways.
