I just have one question can somebody tell me why my suggie is biting me? Whenever we play he often bites and it hurts..

I've been told that there are several reasons why a suggie will bite.

One is fear, if you haven't fully bonded with him.

Two is because he sees you as a source of food and is going back to his "roots" and using his teeth like he would in the wild to strip bark from a tree to get insects or sap.

Three is because he sees you as another glider and is trying to either mate or play with you. I'm not sure of the validity of the mating part, but it's a theory I've heard thrown out there.

From all the information I've gathered, all sources seem to say that giving treats can rectify the biting. In the first case, it helps build trust. In the second case, a glider with a full belly won't try to "strip bark" off your hand to get nectar or insects. In the third case... um... the way to man's heart is through his stomach??

My Elliot bites me from time to time but it's usually not that hard and more like a nip or a nibble. Every once in a while he gets me pretty good, he likes to bit me under my fingernails and THAT can be very painful.

Try giving him licky treats (yogurt on your finger). Sometimes I'll give Elliot mealworms when he does it and he knocks it off.

my older male bites... or used to. i stopped doing licky treats, and hissed if he bit. he RARELY does it now!

OH I should try the hissing thing with Elliot. And I completely spaced on the smell thing... I was just listing reasons that I've read about and overlooked the obvious.

Elliot's gotten much better about the biting though I wish he would just knock it off all together, especially the nail bed and cuticle biting.

I'm definitely going to hiss at him the next time he bites me and see how that goes. It feels strange reinforcing biting with treats.

You can do the psssst sound, too....that's a sound they're very familiar with and use with one another when they don't like something.

Im not having any luck bonding with my glider, he keeps biting me. for a while i had him sleeping in my hand and licking applesauce off my fingers but now the only way i can get him not to bite is if i leave my thumb or finger in his mouth after he bites it. It feels like im not making any progress, i dont understand his behavior. Is it possible that hes just too old to bond with? i feel like im almost ready to give up... Should i try getting a younger glider? mine is already a few months old...

I am assuming that you have watched a youtube video as to how you can discipline your glider. Unfortunately there is a lot of misleading information out there.

For anyone to advise that forcing your thumb into a glider's mouth to teach him not to bite, is just wrong. This is extremely cruel and can hurt your glider, not to speak how it would destroy the trust and bond between yourself and your glider.

You may want to try the "psst" sound when he bites.

Remember to take the bonding process at THEIR pace - not yours.
