See Part 1 here

Well little Baby Bear is still very stuffy, and his eye is watery and itchy (Brodie has scratched himself around his eye making it bloody at times) But the sinus/allergy is not new to us any more and we are treating it with antibiotics and nasal drops. He is also getting antibiotic opthamalic ointment put on his eye.

However he has a new issue now...........it's rather embarassing for him............

You see Brodie has been swallowing alot of air since he's been stuffy and he has gas. He's not bloated, but he is tooting up a storm. (thankfully not a stinky storm) Poor baby bear...........

Brodie is feeling MUCH better today. He was not nearly as stuffy last night and is tooting less (He had some Little Tummies last night to help with it). He still has a ways to go before he's feeling 100% but he's on the way.

Poor Brodie, he has now solved the question for all of us. Gliders can toot. I hope he starts feeling better soon.

Tonight Brodie is wheezy still, but is breathing much easier and is looking less rough. Tho he could have gotten a bath from Momma Syd who always wants her boys to look their best.

It's very soft and there are times when I"m not sure if it's Brodie breathing or tooting. At those times I have to place my fingers near his cloaca and I can feel him tooting.

Brodie dehydrated on me last night. I got him into the vets today for fluids and had the vet teach me how to sub-Q and how much to give him. I came home with a partial bag of fluids, some needles and instructions to sub-Q again tonight and tomorrow am to get this little guy back on track. I have a friend who has sub-Qed her ferrets before who is going to come over to give me a hand with this just to be on the safe side.
Please keep your fingers crossed for Brodie, he had me scared last night.

Sending prayers and good thoughts out to little Brodie.

Chris, once you get the hang of subQ injections they are not that bad to give.

I just got a phone message from Chris that she left earlier for me. Brodie started having seizures. Please keep him and Chris in your thoughts.

Brodie had a massive siezure at 9pm this evening just before my friend was going to come over to give fluids. I thought he was dead. He completely stopped breathing and was totally limp. Then he started gasping again. I wrapped him in a warmed towel and called my vet. Dr Kaiser wasn't the e-vet on duty tonight but Dr Jody agreed to meet me at the office. Daphne (my friend) went with me to the office so Brodie would have someone to hold him. At this point he was starting to revive a touch but was still very out of it. He was given 3cc of sub-q fluids and we discussed what might have caused his siezure. I asked if his dehydration could be a cause and she said that normally didn't happen, that it was generally low or high blood sugar. Since Brodie had a nosebleed after his siezure and it was still seeping some we used that to check his blood sugar and it came out low on the glucose monitor. At this time we sub-qed him again with dextrose (the first batch of fluids had already been absorbed). At this time Brodie realy started to come out of his stupor. It was like watching a glider revive from anestetic. He was disorientated and biting. I managed to keep him from gnawing on his toes until he woke up enough to be aware of his surroundings. Then he peed on the table. Dr Jodie collected this and is going to run it to see if it can tell us anything.
Then I took Brodie home and called work to let them know I was now home and starting to get ready, but was going to be a bit late.
At work I tried to give Brodie some food, but it was almost like he had another minor sizure. He was then zonked out for about hour. When he woke up I swear it was like someone flipped a switch because he turned into the energizer bunny. He flew across the office, climbed the copy machine, climbed the computer tower, bounced back and forth across the floor, tried to climb the doors and made it to the top of the first hinge..........all I could do was sit and stare at him. 4 hours ago I thought I was going to lose him and here he was bouncing everywhere like a ping pong ball.
I talked to Teresa on the phone and she assured me that this was fairly normal.....Brodie was on a sugar high from his dextrose sub-q. I'm to keep an eye on him and make sure that he doesn't crash again and keep pushing his hpw and fruit juice.
Please keep praying for my little guy, I know despite being the energizer bunny that he is still not out of the woods.

I'm really worried about Brodie, he had several more siezures last night. Tho none were as severe as the first. What really concerns me is that everytime he ate anything within 30 seconds he would have a siezure. Does anyone have any idea why eating would trigger a siezure?

I just got back from the vets with Brodie. X-Rays and fecal do not show anything abmormal that could be causing the siezures. I am going to be sub-qing him with a dextros solution 2x a day in addition to a saline solution that he will get multiple times a day as well. In addition, we are going to try some phenobarbatol with him to see if we can keep the siezures under control long enough for him to eat and get his system back in order. I also have some high calorie/vitamin enriched food to suppliment him with. It is by Iams and is their maximum calorie vetrinary formula. We looked into the Carnovore Care by Oxbow but my vet doesn't carry it.

Keep your fingers crossed and the prayers coming. Brodie is a sick little guy, but isn't ready to give up yet.

Aw, Chris...what is it with your gliders and mine? Do we just get the most tweaked cases because we can handle it, at least on some level, or what?

Phenobarbitol can be nasty stuff. I have taken it. I had an adverse reaction to one of my childhood immunizations (before anyone asks...my autistic son did the same thing, with the same shot, but he was autistic BEFORE that-so while I think it can possibly aggravate (sp?) autism...I don't believe it causes it-as I am not autistic and my ex husband's family IS, so I know where Justin's autism came from)....anyhow, I ran unexplained high fevers and had seizures...and was put on phenobarbitol for two years. While I remember a couple of the seizures, I don't remember the side effects of the drug except that my Mom has told me over the years that I RARELY to NEVER SLEPT while I was on it...I would suspect it has that same potential in a glider...so watch for that. I'm sure there could be other side effects, but that is the one I know about.

Poor Brodie...you and I just can't catch a break, can we?

Karen...the sub-q's are new...it wouldn't be causing this. Would be nice if we could blame them. frown

Brodie had his first 1/2 dose of phenobarbatol. The vet wanted to start with a smaller dose to see how it worked for him rather than starting with the full dose of it. Anyway, it made him a tad sleepy.
About 2 1/2 hours after taking his med, we got Brodie out for his 2nd sub-q and got him some food. He had 3 relatively minor siezures as he started to eat. I say relatively minor compared to what he had last night. The first was the strongest and each subsiquent one got more mild. After the 3rd siezure he was able to eat the rest of his 2 1/2 syringes of food without any more siezing.
Poor little guy was sooooooooooo hungry. His tummy was completely empty (per the x-ray) and for the first time in 2 days he really really WANTED to eat.
He is now completely sacked out and snoozing off his meal. In about 3 hours we'll try again and see how he does.

chris have you ever done a bacterial fecal c and s on him that could be from a bacterial infection that manifested in his sinuses. just a thought. but he would need to be off meds for this.

Brodie has been eating and getting sub-q'd every 3-4 hours since his vet visit. Tho he has stopped wanting me to syringe feed him. He now insists on doing it HIMSELF! He has continued to have minor siezures when eating while on a 1/2 dose of phenobarb tho at 4:30 he ate maybe .3-.5 cc of food with NO siezures at all! Unfortunately I was unable to sub-q him because he was too frisky for me to risk doing it by myself. We'll try again in about an hour and see if he can eat some more and get his fluids. Per the vet, we are to continue to sub-q through Friday every 3 hours or so with saline solution and to use the dextrose solution 2x (morning and evening).
I also weighed Brodie before his feeding. I hadn't weighed him since Wed morning when he was down to 69g. I am happy to report that Baby Bear is now up to 73g. I'm not sure how much he actually gained (he may have dropped lower than 69) but he has gained at least 4 grams.
Keep the prayers coming please.

OH! I forgot to mention that I was also able to get some more pus out of Brodie's nose! I scooped it up on a new q-tip and have it stored in a new syringe case (the plastic cases a new syringe comes in) and have it in the fridge. I will take it into the vets office for them to culture tomorrow! Hopefully we will be able to track down the nasty bug that is infecting my baby boy and find out how to kill it once and for all!

Brodie had 1 siezure at 7am this morning when he first started eating. He went on to eat quite a bit with no additional siezures tho so that is good. He has eaten at least 2x since then with no siezures those times.

Poor Brodie! I wonder if the infection is near a nerve, thereby causing the seizures.

I hope they are able to figure something out with that good sample that you got.

Hugs and prayers!

No additional siezures today while eating! laugh And his last 2 meals were fairly big ones for him. He just ate & ate & ate until this last time he fell asleep in my hands when I was washing his face afterwards.

Only the one siezure today, or if he has had more they have been so mild as to be unnoticable & he even continued to eat through them. He has contonued to eat well for me. I am hoping he continues to remain siezur free. He is still on the phenobarb & will remain so until we are told by the vet to discontinue it. Hopefully it is only a temporary condition brought on by his rapid weight loss & dehydration which in turn played havoc with his blood sugar.

24+ hours without a siezure clap and his weight is up to 77g! As you can tell he has been wanting to eat his meals when Momma gives them to him every 3-4 hours (off a plate thank you Mom, I can eat on my own now) Baby bear is doing much much better than he was even tho he is still a sick little boy.
Keep the prayers coming, they seem to be working!

Brodie is still maintaining his weight at 76-77g and is continuing to remain siezure free! I'll try to post some pictures later that I took of him getting groomed at work.

Brodie is continuing to remain siezure free. His weight dropped a tad to 74.5 but he is still eating well. He does not appear dehydrated (per the tent test) but I am keeping a close eye on that and have fluids available at home and take them to work just in case I need them. His appetite remains limited. He flat out refused to eat avacado or pudding and only seems to want his mix. I have been "lacing" it with the high calorie/vitamin food that the vet gave me and Brodie goes nuts over it and scarfs it down. I've also "laced" his mix with baby food chicken and fruit medley and he likes that too, but it's not quite as yummy as the other.

He still has quite a ways to go to get back to normal tho. He is still stuffed up and I just can't seem to teach him to blow his nose. I've tried, but he only wants to wipe it on me. So I've done the next best thing. I hold a kleenex up to his nostril when his nose is running and syphon out the fluid. Unfortunately it only works when he is sleeping. If he's awake, he thinks the tissue tickles and keeps grabbing at it.

It's just sad and happy all at the same time, Chris! The thought of you blowing his little nose gives me the giggles, but then I think of how uncomfortable this little man is and I get sad again. *sigh* Poor little Brodie...I just wish I could snap my fingers and make it all go away!

I wish you could too. But at least I'm getting some fluid out of his nose rather than having it stay in there and stuff him up more or run down his throat.

I'm hopeful on that point Connie. I talked with the vet today and he said Brodie's pus has grown so we will be able to run the sensitivity test on it to find out what bacteria is actually present. He was also THRILLED with Brodies progress and said he was quite the scrapper.

OH and Brodie had a visitor today. His buddy Baxter came upstairs to spend the day snuggling with him in his hospital cage. I think it reassured both of them to see each other. Tomorrow I'm thinking it will be Syddies turn.

I've been away from the board for a few days, I am so sorry you and Brodie are going through this Chris. I really hope they will get bacteria causing all of this. When will they do the sensitivity test?

Sending prayers to the both of you! hug2

Dr Kaiser is hoping that we will have results back from the sensitivity this week (he said he'd call Wed so I'm hoping we'll have results then)

Brodie had another good night. He didn't need sub-q'd and ate well (tho he didn't really want the yogurt, I insisted he eat it) His weight is 76 this morning, so that is good. He also wasn't as stuffy last night and his nose wasn't running as much. I still helped him "blow" it a few times but not that many. But most important......he is still siezure free!

I'm betting your wicking away the sinus fluid has helped a LOT. I hope the sensitivity test helps pin point what antibiotic/s he needs and he gets better real soon!!!

Brodie was not quite as sleepy last night. He still slept ALOT but he is also showing more interest in grooming between munching on his mix and napping. When he is awake he is alert and curious and much steadier on his feet. He is still not showing an interest in food other than his HPW mix but he is continuing to eat it and enjoys having me mix in the high cal/vitamin food the vet gave. His stools are a good shape, size and color and his gas seems to have gone. His sinus's were stuffy last night, but cleared up after I helped him "blow" his nose a few times. After getting home from work, I weighed him and was delighted to see that he weighed in at 79.5g!

Brodie is most definately feeling better tho..... he had enough energy to try to avoid the dreaded syringe and when that didn't work he told me all about how he didn't like what I was giving him and he would rather NOT take it. Afterwards he sat in his cage and tried to spit out the taste and worried Baxter who crept out of the pouch to see what was going on with his buddy. He beat a fast retreat tho when Brodie spit at him.

LOL! They can be so clear, as to what they're thinking! I hated having Roo in an ecollar after his surgeries, but it was so cute to see him pout! He would wait until he saw me looking at him, then deliberately turn his back to me!

Hoping the vet gives you good news today!

What an amazing difference one week can make! About the only problem is that Brodie now doesn't want to eat anything EXCEPT his yummy mix of HPW and high calorie/vitamin food from the vet.

This is my first post of the day and what a fantastic post to start my day with!!! What did the vet have to say about the sensitivity test?

No word yet from the vet's office, so they must not have gotten the results in yesterday.
Brodie remained FANTASTIC last night, tho he wasn't as hungry (no wonder, he ate like a little piggy yesterday afternoon) and while his weight was down a tad it was still 81g this morning when I got home. This was BEFORE he ate a big breakfast.

Since he's been back with the others, his weight has dropped to @ 80g. Not too surprising since he has to SHARE his food now LOL. Otherwise he is doing incredible. He is NOT a bit stuffy or swollen. He is continuing to eat well. He has nice shiny fur, a fluffy tail, bright eyes and perky ears. He is still sleeping alot, but my vet said it could take several weeks for him to fully adjust to the phenobarb and when he is awake, he is alert and active and back to his bouncy self.
I STILL haven't heard back from the vet about his culture, but we can't rush the sensitivity testing. The results will come when they come.

At least the took a sample and at least it's going to be worth the wait for the results. I am glad Brodie is doing well. clap

Chris called me. She heard back from the vet. Brodie has three different bacterias grow in the culture they did. Good news is all three types are killed off with Baytril. Brodie was originally on baytril but when he wasn't have any positive effects, they changed meds. This time he is going to go on long term (perhaps 3-4 weeks worth) baytril to see if they can get this knocked out once and for all.

Awwwwwww T, you told everyone my news LOL. Anyway, Brodie will be a happy camper, because now instead of 3 antibiotics he'll only have to take 1. Right now he is doing incredible, absolutely NO symptoms that anything is or has been wrong. But I know that the bugs are lurking in his nose just waiting to erupt again and make my baby sick. So we're going on the attack......the troops are lined up and Brodie is ready to wipe out the attacker once and for all! Go Team Brodie!

I have been following your post and I am so glad that Brodie is doing better and the vet has finally pinpointed the problem. I am also very sorry that I didn't win the box that you had on auction, but very glad to see the response for a great cause.

Take Care Brodie - You've got a wonderful mom!

Hugs and Prayers!

YEA BRODIE AND CHRIS am so glad the vets finally know what they are dealing with and will have Brodie all healthy in just a few more weeks and as the meds kill off the infections one by one he will feel better and better. HUGS to you both from all of us and make sure to give Brodie lots of treats from us.

He was just barking for food LOL! I've been giving him an afternoon snack and he and the others have gotten soooooooooooo used to it that they DEMAND it now. Only now instead of his mix he gets peas and carrots.

Brodie is maintaining his weight between 88-91 grams and is doing incredible. There is no swelling, no sniffles and most important no seizures! He is still on his medication (baytril for the infection, phenobarb & prednisone) and most likely will be for a while still. But the little dude takes them like a champ. He is so funny when he takes them. He'll scrunch his little face up and squeeze his eyes shut then after getting kisses, he'll squeek one eye open just a touch to see if he's going to get kissed again or get his meds. He is playful and bouncy and very tolerant of his new buddy Illusion pouncing on him.
I do need to call my vet sometime next week to see how long he wants me to keep Brodie on his medication. But based on the persistance and severity of his infection, I'm guessing it will be for at least another 2 weeks. Hopefully when he finally does go off his antibiotics, I can also get him off the prednisone and the phenobarb.

Give Brodie some kisses from us, oh and give Illusion some kisses too or we'll never hear the end of it! grin
