Is this joey being rejected? #96139

Our joeys are now 1 week OOP. This morning I found the male joey alone in one of the nest-pouches. All the other gliders were in another pouch together, except one male, who was alone in a different pouch. He was warm and seemed okay. I put him back in with his mom, who gratefully took him from me and got him nursing. Fast forward to this evening, and I hear crabbing, and turn to find the same joey on the floor of the cage, under the nest. Again, I returned him, and mom seemed grateful, and tucked him back in with the rest of them. SHould I worry? I have the things I need to supplement or hand-feed if I need to, but obviously I'd rather not if I can avoid it.

[:"green"]I would definitely start to supplement feed this joey right away. Since it's been found away from everyone else twice, it was probably leaving the nest looking for food. If you need any specific help, let me know...

Thanks. I think we will start supplementing, just to be sure. The joey, for his part, seems to be in good health, and does not appear scratched or bitten in any way.

This morning the same joey was out of the nest again. We are supplementing him every 3-4 hours right now, but otherwise returning him to the nest. The female always takes him from me when I give him back, and tucks him back in with the other one, fusses over him, etc. She does not seem to be acting at all aggressively toward him, and he has no scars or marks at all from being bitten or scratched. Do we need to pull this baby, or just watch vigilantly and keep supplementing? I'm assuming it's better for him to remain with the family group if it's at all possible....

You are right. i would leave him with his family as long as they are still helping out. If you do notice any aggression or scars/scratches then pull him ASAP.

He might be hanging onto momma as she leaves the pouch and then falls off of her. I've had that happen a few times.

Joeys that are supplimented stand a much better chance at surviving than a joey that is completely pulled (unless of course the parents are harming the joey). I would agree with Sil and leave the baby with the parents since they are still caring for him.

Joeys will also wander out of the pouch looking for food. As long as you keep up with the regular feedings then mom won't have to feed as much but the joey will stay full (and warm in the pouch).

Good luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

Thanks. That was what my gut was telling me, but as we are new to gliders entirely (they are rescues who came to us with joeys already ITP) I'm still learning to trust my instinct with these guys. So far so good today.

[:"green"]sounds like you're doing great so far! I agree with Elisabeth & Kristin - keep the joey with the parents if at all possible...

Every time we looked in on them last night, the joeys were with one parent or the other, and were nursing very frequently. This morning, they were in with mama. Both joeys look to be doing very well now. Keeping fingers crossed, but so far so good.
