I know I read on here what to use/not use to clean my cage. The bars are all sticky so it is cleaning time.
I searched and searched and cannot find it... please tell me where to look... I am afraid of using something that will harm them.

I steam my cage first then wipe it down with a hot vinegar/water solution. I believe there are some people that use plain old dish soap but you have to make sure you rinse really really well. In between washings you can use Clorox wipes. I don't use them because they leave little suds but I'm pretty sure those are safe too! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/thumb.gif" alt="" />

In between deep cleaning, I use alcohol free baby wipes from my health food store. I don't like using anything with soap because, like the Clorox wipes, little suds are left. Then as the glider gets food on it's hands and feet, the residue is on the cage bars to stick to them, after which they're cleaned via tongue bath. To me that's not good -- but just my personal outlook. I use a prickly pear cactus cleaner to wash my cages in my tub/shower combination. I get it from www.nannysbest.com. Just a drop or two does the trick, so a small bottle lasts quite a while. Prickly pear is a natural bacteria killer, yet it's safe for your pets. I only use it to wash my pouches also. If I have to break out the "Big Guns", I use my Scunci steamer. Best of luck with whatever you choose.

How big is your cage? Mine is just barely small enough to be able to fit it in the tub/shower so I move it into the shower for a good scrubbing with hot water every other week. I spray it down with Lysol Kitchen Clean Up and scrub it with a brush, then rinse it really well with hot water from the handheld shower head.
To keep it cleaner between washings, I use a Glider Kitchen for feeding the gliders (a tupperware container with a hole cut in it for them to go inside to eat) so they don't sling BML everywhere.

You can use a vinegar/water mixture, commercial cleaners, or just plain water. The key is:rinse, rinse, rinse! If you won't lick it, don't put your gliders in it. For between cleanings, I use hot water and a wash cloth or clorox wipes for wiping down the cages. The water/cloth is much cheaper, and really not any more difficult. I hope this helps.

Its a really large cage (for my Blue and Gold Mccaw)so it wont fit in the shower. It is cold outside, but I guess I need to take it out and use the hose.
The bars are SO sticky, I have tried wiping it down but it is still tacky.
Messy little things arent they. :-) But cute!

If you can't do the car wash thing, and can't really fit it in the shower, take it in the kitchen, or another room with vinyl flooring. Spray it with water, or sponge it with water, or whatever, just get it wet. Let the water sit on there for about 5 min. Then take a bucket of water as hot as you can stand it, and a washcloth and wipe it down. You can use a bit of soap, but you will be rinsing with the wash cloth, too, so not too much. The water ahead of time will soak into the yicky spots and make them much easier to remove. Rinse out the bucket, and use a fresh washcloth to rinse with. *Tip, sweep the floor first, then you can mop when you're done!

I use chlorhexidine solution mixed with water. It is use by most vets, you can buy it by the gallon (brand name is Novalsan) Nolvasan is an EPA-registered disinfectant, and works against at least 60 different bacteria, fungi, yeasts, and viruses. Nolvasan is non-corrosive, has minimal to no skin irritation, and retains anti-microbial activity in the presence of organic matter. I mix 2 tablespoons of Chlorhexidine with a gallon on water so the $20 gallon last forever!! I spray their cage down and wash their wheel and toys once a week. This kills any bacteria and then I use PureAyre for the occassional odor. I have two unnuetered males so the smell can be strong and this seems to work the best for me. I have attached links to where yu can buy both products. Hope this helps! Novalsan http://www.calvetsupply.com/index.asp?PageAction=VIEWPROD&ProdID=58PureAyre http://sugar-gliders.com/pureayre.htm
