I, too, have read that you can reverse HLP with calcium treatments, but I am far from certain. I can only pray she pulls through.

When a glider is severly calcium deficent... vet will usually give calcium injections. Then from there the oral calcium. To rule out HLP... an X-Ray is needed. The bones will be pitted and thinned, may show fractures as well as broken bones if sever. If bones appear to be normal then it is back to the drawing board as to wither the glider has a parasite or bacterial problem. My suggestion is to switch to a better diet that is rich in calcium such as the Bourbon's Modified Leadbeaters as it is a mix... and the glider does not have to chew. Fruits and Veggies can be baby foods if the glider is not able to use her hands. I would not feed mealies at this time if the glider has HLP. Reason is... they are high in phos and low in calcium which is the reverse as to what your glider needs in her diet.. HLP... is a very painfull disease. It is seen in the long bones first... then the spinal cord. Fractures, and then broken bones to complete paralysis followed with death. The nerve endings are pinched which causes the lack of mobility which is very painfull. If the problem is not corrected... the glider will die a very slow and painfull death. HLP is prevetable and is treatable with good vet Care. Since the vet gave you such an outdated diet... I would be looking for a more knowledgeable Exotic vet.

I have been blending the insects with the Leadbeaters mix I've been making. Can I do that with BML too? Also, she does not seem to like the crickets. Is there another insect option other than mealworms and crickets that is practical? Luna received a calcium injection for the two visits she was at the vet and has since been receiving the daily oral calcium. Thanks again for the information about HLP. Very helpful.

If Luna will not eat insects without grinding and blending them, then offer her something else as a treat. Gliders don't *need* insects if they are getting the proper protien and calcium, etc, from the rest of their diet. My girls didn't even want mealworms for a while when I first got them. Anyway - try to see if she will eat yogurt. I feed mine Danon All Natural. It is high in calcium and has good cultures for their little tummies. Yogurt is OK to offer as a treat or even to spread on top of the BML mixture, according to the GC diet links. I feed mine HPW and it's OK to give yogurt and even Gliderade on the side. I am glad she's doing better and that you're still letting us know how she's doing. I hate to think of any wee one suffering.

I don't mind giving her insects or grinding/blending, I was just wondering if it's okay to mix them with BWL. Her diet has missed them her whole life, sadly... And I think that is part of the reason she got to where she is now. Though if she had been receiving it in other forms, like you said, it would have also made a difference probably. I never realized the importance of those things. When I got her (at age 16), I was told: fruits, vegetables, meats. I had a book and everything and thought I was doing it right. My coworker needed to get rid of her because they were getting a rottweiler (sp?) dog. She was probably only a couple months old at the time. Actually, I do remember trying to give her insects when she was young and she refused them -- but I had no idea the impact or importance of a balanced diet. I thought everything she was getting was "healthy." Anyway, I'll look into the yogurt thing. Thank you for your suggestion.

Actually, just an FYI meal worms are more of a "treat" as they are far more fatty than protein. I agree that considering your vet gave you such a diet it might be a good idea to find someone with a little more experience and direct knowlege about suggies. I still recommend calling around a few vets, telling them the situation and treatment and if they feel they would like to meet and possibly suggest any alternatives. HTH good luck!
