Last year someone posted about having been in a catastrophic storm or situation -- I can't remember if it was a hurricane or tornado or fire, or what. I can't find the post right now, but I thought this might be a good time to remind everyone to be careful about severe weather, and be prepared in case something should happen.

It's a good idea to have a travel cage available and ready in case of really bad weather or in case something unexpected happens. If you have to make a hasty exit from your home, then you can quickly gather your gliders and get out of the house.

I'm saying this during a tornado warning -- and remembering that it's good advice. Now I know that if I have to leave the house quickly, my gliders will be ready to go with me.

I keep a travel/emergency cage under each main cage, that way if something does happen we are ready to go! I mentioned it to hubby a while back and he said, no need for the emergency cages, the whole cage is going! Right, with me being the only one here right now, there is NO WAY I could get those three cages out of there in time! Probably a good idea to also have a "Glider Survival Kit" basic foods for an emergency, this would be a good time to use the dry diets, something for water and some dishes to serve them with. Along with spare pouches, blankies, etc. whatever you would need bare necessities to survive if you were unable to be in your house with electricity, heat and water. Even the basic first aid kit could be included, to be kept handy for that instance. The supplies can go in the emergency cage or in a handy to grab bag right beside it, refreshing water, and food every so often. We do it for ourselves, and should for all our pets as well!
Ok, now that I've posted that, I'm off to make sure I'm prepared!

Being prepared is a great idea! Also though, it's good to always be prepared when you are out. I just sat under a gas station overhang with my two babies while tornados touched down all over the county I had pulled off the interstate in. (The lovely gas station kicked us out and boarded up the store when the power went out.) At any rate, I was glad to have their cage with me--I generally just put them in their pouch when we are out. Of course I was scared they would go into shock, so I was holding their pouch the whole time asking them if they were OK.. I finally realized though that they could have cared less about the weather and just wanted me to leave them alone so they could sleep:). We are home safe now and all is well:). So yes, be prepared for Tornados, because it's that time of the year.. In Tennessee at least!

Well, I got a sticker from the SPCA to put on the front window in case of fire. It has space to check what kinds of animals are in the house. I don't know how much good this would do, but it is a nice idea. I think I'll put the number of cats and write sugar glider on there, though to be more specific. They sent it to me for free from a request form I filled out on their website if anyone is interested in getting one.

Lucy, around a year or so ago I had posted about us having some severe weather and a tornado touching down down the road from us, dunno if you remember that or not...

I dont know why I never even thought about it...
When the sirens went off, (My daughter was already in a safe spot along with her hamster at the time/ which she MADE me go get... ) MealieMan was standing watching the news as the noise was getting louder.... the TV kept cutting in and out and messing up (the Lights started going on and off too)... I TOTALLY freaked and ran to Mya's (only had her at the time) cage and started trying to undo the door, which at the time was all velcro'd shut, I couldnt get the velcro off fast enough...so I started panicking and trying to drag her big cage with me into the bathroom (which probably looked comical), it was not working... I was hollering for MealieMan and crying...it was horrible!
Finally, MealieMan had to grab me and drag me to the bathroom, the wholetime telling me he was sorry...was not fun for him Im sure... I was so freaked out.

It all happened so fast...
It was all over so fast.....
(to me it felt like forever... My Mya was in there all alone! )
After it was over...I ran into the living room and fumbled around trying to get the door unlatched...I swear that took forever.
I grabbed her out of her bed...she was still sleeping soudly ...I kissed her and promised her Id never leave her like that again!

We drove around the neighborhood and there were places were things were a total mess...it was horrible.

We got home and I Immediatly cut down Myas old smaller cage into a travel size cage that would fit perfectly in the bathroom if needed...
(Ive gotten a better travel cage for them both now...) I also, when I got home...had MealieMan make door latches for Myas house, so that I never would have to fumble around to get the door open again... I want to be able to get into the cage in a heartbeat! (we since have a new cage...it has Klubertanz cage locks on the doors...their wonderful for getting in and out quick!)

You talk about feeling terrible...I felt like I had left family behind....it was an awful feeling!
So, now we are prepared... and even to the point like Chey mentioned...they have a litte bright red emergency kit, with all the essentials, ready to go... Never again do I want to feel the way I did that night.

(I do know someone else had posted once about a fire...and someone else it seems posted about a hurricane or something... )

I have Bugsy's old cage right next to the closet door that I intend to dive into if and when a tornado hits Corsicana. It will be a crowded closet, me, a cage with 2 gliders, 2 dogs. I keep the closet pretty much empty so I won't have any trouble getting in it. Now I need to put a few food dishes and a bottle of water in there also. Guess I'm not as prepared as I thought I was! Thanks for posting Lucy - reminders are often needed and very much appreciated!

I was at a Pet Expo last weekend, and they had a pamphlet from the Red Cross on Preparing for your Pet during an Emergency. I'm in Canada, but the US Red Cross should have the same or a similar pamphlet. It is designed for cats and dogs, but can be applied to any pet.

One of the things in the pamphlet is to have an emergency kit, pretty much as has been described, but with a few extra things. One thing that was suggested to be included in the kit was the name and number of the animal's vet, and of one or more people/places where the animal can stay in case you can't get home to pack them up.

In addition to the emergency kit, the pamphlet has a number of other suggestions on ways to prepare for the care of your pet during an emergency.

I have a travel cage and all... but now I'm going home and getting everything together in some kind of neat organized manner in one box or bag, right now if I wanted to find everything it'd take me about 15 minutes... Also thinking about cleaning out the large downstairs closet since it's gotten pretty messy over the past 2 months. Thanks for the reminder/warning.

Will is a volunteer firefighter, we are covered in that area with safety.

Bringing to the top. I thought again last night while the weather was bad and we were under a tornado watch, "How quickly could I gather my gliders if I had to?" I didn't like the answer I came up with, and want to make sure I can always put them in a little cage and get out of there fast if need be.

Last evening, with 'dangerous thunderstorms' and 'tornadic activity' bearing down on us, I spent alot of time trying to figure out what to take to the basement with me (other than the gliders, who were sleeping away in a zipper pouch around my neck). I was also updating a friend about the situation because she doesn't have a TV . When she asked if I had any food in my kit, I responded 'peanut butter and mealworms' and she lost it. Both items were for the gliders, altho' Petunia might have let me share her PB..............maybe.
btw, Petunia got very agitated at one point and kept trying to jump off my chair. I've heard of dogs behaving strangely right before a tornado. Could some gliders be sensitive like that??

ive always had an emergency cage plus food like insectivore diet plus baby food jars gliderade packets bugs n berries and bottle water etc in a baby diaper bag plus extra pouches and small two cages just in case of a nuclear disaster during the war or weather i have it in the utility room so all i have to do is grab thier pouches that their sleeping in and throw them in the cages take the food /water and run. oh i alse keep monkey biscuits in there plus other dry foods the insectivore diet is great as they can live on that for 50 percent of their diet plus the baby food fruit and veggies and u can even put in a baggies some rep cal.

[:"green"]The diaper bag is a great idea for supplies. We have several of the soft sided coolers around here, so that is what I use.

Just be sure that your baby food, if that is what you have packed, is not expired ... just check it from time to time and replace it when needed. The same would be true of any processed food.

I don't know how other States work about these stickers but I know in Maine that the firefighters no longer pay attention to the stickers.......They automatically do full sweeps/searches of the house. I know one of the reasons was due to people moving and leaving the stickers on the windows :-)
