I just have to say, I am happy they all pulled through. They are real troopers. We know they are in good hands now.

So very, very sad. I'm not sure what else would help get the smell off the cages but if you could put LOTS of baking soda in them and then wrap them up in plastic bags, it will absorb the odor - also sunshine & fresh air helps. We all sympathize with you and as others have said, we can learn from others and we are holding a fire/disaster drill in our house tonight. We keep a "hurricane box" and I'm adding some baby food & other glider items to it now. Fire, flood, tornado or other natural disaster can happen to anyone - we are so sorry it happened to you. Prayers for you and yours tonight.

Words cannot express feelings at a time like this -- I am happy that your three babies are on the road to recovery; I am so sorry that your other babies are no longer with you. All of us in the glider community feel for you. You are in my thoughts -- hang in there and give as much love and attention to those three babies as you can.
I, too, will be making an escape route for my family -- the furry ones and the not-so-furry ones.
Sue Waylon Cinnamon

Jorji, I don't have any new words of wisdom or comfort to add to what has been said. Maybe someone will post the Rainbow Bridge site for you to visit. It is important to stay strong for the survivors that depend on you. hugs and prayers coming to you & yours from Illinois.
Judy & Crew

That is so unfortunate. At least you know it wasn't your fault that they died. Don't blame yourself. Just be glad that you didn't lose them all to the fire. It's always so hard to lose a pet, so I can imagine what you are going through. My heart and prayers go out to you!
Tom "Mr.BooMY" McDill Willow & Evander

you know this has got me thinking as I always think I have it all down.
I live in an apartment and this is one of my biggest fears. I have a emergicy cage to get them out in, but would I be home if it were to happen?
I know one time I was not. but my boyfriend was and he doesn't really care about my pets, because the alarm was pulled and he went down stars and out side, then he saw a man holding his cat and realized he left our cat, (and sugar gliders) but he didn't care about the sugar gliders, and of cource he can't go back up.
luck only, there was no fire. but now I have to teach him if there is a fire what to do with my gliders because I don't want him just saving my cat.
but if no one is home what can you do? so I fear this all the time.

Jorji, You might try putting the cages in plastic bags with vinegar, just plain vinegar in a glass, use like a cup each at least. Vinegar absorbs odors also. It has even worked for smoke odors for me. Good luck and I am so glad to hear the three are doing good! Chey

Just this side of heaven is a place called Rainbow Bridge.
When an animal dies that has been especially close to someone here, that pet goes to Rainbow Bridge. There are meadows and hills for all of our special friends so they can run and play together. There is plenty of food, water and sunshine, and our friends are warm and comfortable.
All the animals who had been ill and old are restored to health and vigor; those who were hurt or maimed are made whole and strong again, just as we remember them in our dreams of days and times gone by. The animals are happy and content, except for one small thing; they each miss someone very special to them, who had to be left behind.
They all run and play together, but the day comes when one suddenly stops and looks into the distance. His bright eyes are intent; His eager body quivers. Suddenly he begins to run from the group, flying over the green grass, his legs carrying him faster and faster.
You have been spotted, and when you and your special friend finally meet, you cling together in joyous reunion, never to be parted again. The happy kisses rain upon your face; your hands again caress the beloved head, and you look once more into the trusting eyes of your pet, so long gone from your life but never absent from your heart.
Then you cross Rainbow Bridge together....
Author unknown...

Hmmm Jorji, I dont know, but I do know that the smoke damage from a fire can be an absolute nightmare (Im so sorry Hun.)...my husband has done a few "fire jobs"... and some things, like metal mini blinds, ceiling fans, etc... his employees will use a "degreaser" (go to an automotive store and look at their cleaning agents...there should be a number of Degreasers to choose from, some of them are very cheap too (some are like $5 for a BIG bottle)...they use degreasers to clean car interiors, carpets, etc... (it works great on Home carpet too!! as with all things, test on a hidden spot first!) You might try taking the cages to a car wash, and scrubbing them down with a "degreaser" then hose them down thoroughly... Spray the cages down with a water bottle filled with bleach diluted with water. Let the cages sit for a few minutes...then hose them down extremely well (REPEATEDLY). Dry the cages off somewhat with a towel, then let them sit and air dry for a few moments... This may help clean the cages of the smoke smell/residue...the degreasers found at automotive stores works wonders cleaning up nasty messes!! My husbands employees have used it successfully and so have we to remove a number of things, including smoke. []images/icons/smile.gif" border="0[/]
You might try this, maybe it will work for you too and you wont have to worry about new cages or anything like that...Im sorry your having to go through all this...keep us updated and let us know if there is anything that we could do. Jorji, hi, me again... I sure hope you're doing better. I worked with a painter that did fire jobs, we used a cleaner called T.S.P. (TriSodiumPhosphate)(sp?) This is a heavy duty cleaner, it has to be mixed, and I don't remember the ratios, but it is on the box. (Please use rubber gloves for this) After using the T.S.P. you should rinse and then apply a mixture of bleach, vinegar and water. Then rinse thoroughly, a power washer would work great in this situation. I hope this helps...
Tom, Rocky & Roxy (and 2 very active lumps in the pouch)
[ 01-30-2002: Message edited by: sugar(glider)daddy ]
