Great News:
Flip it would seem is back to using the bathroom mroe or less as he was before the accident. He went probably a couple more times since last and I "checked" his feces. It is as normal as it can be and more or less just like how it was before. Why this is so good is because barring any infections ( due to meds I doubt they will happen ) he should recover completely in that area.

im glad u took him to a good vet. last yr my glider has pnumonia and bacterial inf. and it cost me over 1000 dollars to get her well but shes worth it i luv her to much to let her die. and with alot of work and prayers shes hear one yr later. still has scar tissue that will last her lifetime. from the damge to her lungs she has a little crackle when she sleeps but thank God shes alive and well. if u saw the condition of my girl when she was sick even the vet calls her miracle girl. she was in an oxygen cage 4 days and had to get sub qs and be fed with a french cateter for a week. so i think with alot of care flip will be fine. just dont let your guard down keep an eye on him at all times if hes a mutilator. so u can get a collar on him at the first time u see him mutilate himself. good luck.

He is too big for an e-collar. Right now we have a cone held together with 4 staples. Anything else, and he would get right out. I did notice one thing though. At the vet ( within a day of treatment ) he was very active. but back at the house, and me being with him, he has calmed down tons and is getting back to normal.

Mystique, I'm glad that it looks like Flip will make a full recovery. Pat yourself on the back for your quick thinking and actions that probably saved his life!!!!
This situation could serve as a reminder to everyone, that even if you can't play with them every night, at least take 5 mins and check on them. Chey

Well, the one thing that could cause Flip to be " put down " has happened. He is not able to pee. Not that he is peeing badly, or " wrong ", but apparently just not peeing. His bladder is really swollen. We do not know if it is due to complications of the stitches put in, or some sort of UTI. ( Urinary Tract Infection ). Doctor is keeping him overnight for " one last shot ". he is going to open up the stitches and see if he can fix Flip. He is seeing if it was the stitches or if it is something more serious. Could be his " unit " is being blocked, or something is really messed up. If this last surgery doesn't work, I will have to put Flip down. Why? The only other option is something I am not prepared to do. He has been through so much I don't want him to go through another VERY VERY VERY STRESSFUL surgery. Keep in mind due to their small anatomy this surgery might not work. ( Would entail opening his chest and routing his penis to a opening. ) If it were possible it would be insanely expensive. Don't hate me for mentioning money, but we've spent $550 ( including this last surgery ) on him. This surgery if possible at all, when post-op visits and medicines included would cost at least $1,000 it seems. I hate to say it, and I don't want to sound like a horrible owner, but I have to draw the line somewhere. Even the vet. agreed with me. So say some prayers because he goes under surgery tonight, and I have to call at about 9:30 am tomorrow to see how things went. Keep Flip in your prayers…..Francisco

[:"blue"]I am so sorry to hear this latest news about Flip. I know how upset you must be and understand all that you said in your post. Sometimes, we as the human caregivers, must make decisions we do not necessarily want to make. My prayers are with you and Flip but especially with the vet that he will have the knowledge to bring your little one through this latest ordeal. [/]

Well the doctor took the time to update me on the surgery via phone call. ( Is this normal? ) Well, it is both bad, yet somewhat good news. The bad news. There was a blockade of something that was disrupting ( not allowing ) the flow of urine for Flip. So the vet had to use a cathader (sp?) routed through some hole he made, or original one. He pulled out 5 teaspoons of urine!!!! If you have no idea what this is, or even if you do, get a regular cup, then measure and dump 5 teaspoons into the cup. That was what he had in his bladder that was taken out. then came the flow of Flip's regular urine. Good news is this, Flip is now capable of pooping and peeing. ( Maybe not perfectly but at least he can poop and pee. ) The surgery was for now a success ( thanks for your prayers. ) . I am taking him home once....AGAIN. I got put through heck...AGAIN!!! I think the biggest concern will now be infection. Will update tomorrow after i pick him up...Francisco p.s. Seriously, I don't know how much more of this rollercoaster I can take...lol

I am sorry you and Flip are going through this horrible ordeal. Early on in this thread I did ask if the vet checked his urine and did not get a reply. Feel badly I did not ask again as perhaps you did not see what I posted. Hang in there. You have done more than 100% and I fully understand about the money and emotional impact. Sending prayers to Flip for a speedy recovery.

Good thing is problem was found ( if not almost too late ) and Flip is yet once more on road to recovery. Seriously though, this is taking a toll on me. Judie don't worry about it one bit. You and everyone else have been wonderful. Only reason I did not respond is because of above mentioned reason. I mean, if the vet, a licensed professional thinks things are ok, I do as well. I should say, I up to now believed in vets 100%. Not to say this guy isn't a great one, just that I have to take a more proactive role in every aspect of Flip's life.

Fransisco, you are so very right, in your statement about having to take a more proactive role in Flips treatment. Unfortunately that is all too true with everything in life. MD's, vet's, etc. Our world and lives have become so busy, that we aren't able to give the standard of care that we once did. However, you are so very fortunate that your vet has the knowledge to do all this! There are so many on the board that their vets would scratch their heads and not want to say "I don't know", . You're doing a great job with Flip, I'm sure he will be super happy to see you again! Hugs, Chey

BY the grace of God and God alone, Flip has hit his first two obstacles and come out swingen. Fact is this literally is his last hope, not only would any further treatment be insanely stressful for both of us, but be way too expensive...

i know what u mean my girl last yr cost me over 1500 dollars but i could no let her die. maybe your vet can help u out and let u pay him out like mine did. he can be made well im sure. there is no greater stress than the torture my glider went thru last yr. as she gasped for air with her mouth open and having the vet poke her all over trying to help her she bit him and crabbed to no end. but that is past and with Gods help shes celebrated a year aniversary since that ordeal she's 6 yrs old now and i told the vet whatever he has to do save her. i pd double since it was his weekend off. and needed him to go to the office 3 times a day and feed her and give her sub qs as she didnt eat and drink anymore. we had to force feed her for 4 days till she ate on her own. they sure are worth it though. dont give up no matter what.

I told someone in PM and I hope you understand. Money itself isn't the problem. I personally could afford all this 10x over. But we are talking about $1,500+. I know you spent that much and your glider is ok, but this would be Flip's 3rd surgery in two weeks or less. And while he has come out swinging each time, this last possible surgery, would require insane " things ". We are talking about opening up his chest, rerouting his urethra, etc... Think about it, a incredibly invasive surgery to whih the outcome is by no means certain. Money, aside, think about his quality of life afterwards, I know you had to forcefeed your glider and in time it wa sok, but this is so much more troubling for Flip. I don't believe I could do it, ( and I hope you understand ) but if there was no guarentee thr last possible surgery would work, and even if he did survive, his quality of life would be very much decreased. While I would love to sa " I don't care how much it costs, and no matter how [censored] his life is afterwards, I'm gonna allow it ".....I just can't. p.s. If it were $1,500 to just " make him better ", I would gladly pay it I think. Thing is, first time it was to keep him alive. Second time was to fix the vet's mistake, as would this third oe It's a incredible decision but money, and the quality of lfie of glider, and owners(s) has to be taken into consideration.

I know as hard as it it, we must think about the quality of life. Will he be happy, active? Will he be able to do what he's used to? will he always suffer? To what degree? things like that have to be taken into thought. If I knew a treatment could possibly "save" my glider, but that the quality of life would be horrible to that little one....I think my decision would be to let go, let that little one find some peace and know in my heart I did what was right for him in the end. My prayers are with you at this time Mystique (sir). We understand completely and you would never be looked down on for choosing the right decision, should it have to be made in Flip's case.

I think the way you are thinking is commendable. It shows you truly love your baby and you dont want him to suffer just so you can have the satisfaction of having him around longer. It shows that you are not a selfish person, you did all you could do plus more and leaving it in Gods hands right now is the absolute right thing to do. It would be completely different if you tried absolutely nothing and just told the vet to put him down the first go around. I pray that flip recovers, yet if he dont I pray you will find comfort in knowing that you did all you could possibly do for the little guy and cherish his memories with you that made you smile. We're all here for you.

Ok, so the rollercoaster keeps going. Fact is I have heard VERY good advice ranging from the the advice everyone wants to hear, to the advice not many want to admit. Flip was brought home a while ago ( went out to buy supplies ). He has his catheder in him right now. It is TINY. But amazingly enough Flip does not mind it much. While I am sure he feels it there, he is not thrashing at it or trying to take it out. I saw the surgery point and it is / was a serious severe surgery. half his stomach is shaved...( kinda gross but funny looking at same time. ) He does not mind the antiseptic ointment he needs 2-3 times a day. I completely cover every area that has been worked on. I am taking NO CHANCES with infection. Now to his eating / drinking. He has a " satellite collar " on him right now. The vet put him on it. I am going to make a e-collar and inquire with vet about having it on Flip to allow for more mobility. He has to tilt his head over his feeding and drinking dish. I am using baby food jar lids to put his food and water in. He doesn't seem to mind as he attackes water and food when I give it to him. Needless to say he won't go thirsty or hungry. With his bladder ( for the moment ) fixed, he is dirnking as "usual". So for now it seems Flip has yet again majorly surprised the vets and nurses. He is doing a ton better then even they could of ever hoped. ( By there own words they don't know how he is doing so well. ) He is alert and active and even with the satellite collar, is able to sleep, eat, and drink. ( Although I still handfeed and give him drink. ) When I got him I knew in time this could happen. While i am ready to make the ultimate sacrifice, if need be for both our goods, I am nto giving up on him yet. Flip has beat the odds once again and is doing so well the vet. Hospital has no idea how he's so "active" even with these past two surgeries. If he has the strength to keep going and fighting, I'll be darned if I don't.
