Hello everyone, I am about to be a new parent to 2 gliders, I have been reading a lot studying a lot, and still got no definitive answers so I found this place maybe you can lay to rest some of my concerns or worries.

My first concern is that I read and heard they like to pee on everything is this true I mean if I have them out playing on the sofa and whatnot will they pee on my furniture, and rugs and so forth?

What about my morning walks I have heard it is OK to take my gliders on walks with me either in a pouch or sitting on my shoulders, do I have to think about some sort of leash as I am afraid they might run away while on walk and out and about?

Thanks\I am sure as I learn from them I will have more questions

First answer for both questions is you will need to become bonded to your gliders. And that will take time, trust and they need to mature. It can take as long as a year or two for them to learn you are their safe place and stay with you. The more time you spend with them the better .

As far as turning them loose in your home, sugar gliders are scent oriented. They will mark a territory as well as pee and poop on things. There are a few steps to make this not happen as frequently. When they wake up, give them time in the cage to go to the bathroom before you get them out. You can't potty train them, but you can watch for signs they need to pee or poop. Keeping tissues handy will help clean up as well. Be sure to close toilet lids, any source of water covered or drained, just make sure you have baby proofed any room they may be loose in.

When it comes to being outdoors, it's safer to keep them in their pouch and zipped up. They do startle easy and may jump off you if they are scared. We don't recommend leashes because if they jump from you, they can be choked or break their neck. A harness can permanently damage their patagium(skin between hands and feet that they glide with), as well as injure their spinal cord.

There are predators to consider as well when being outdoors. Hawks, and owls would look at gliders as easy prey.

You will put a lot of time and effort in to bonding and playing with your gliders. Certain things can put that all at risk.

I hope this was helpful! Please let us know how you and your gliders are doing smile

Dawn has given you great advise. It takes time to bond and I don't advise taking them outside in anything other than a zippered pouch.

Unfortunately being a parent with kids, there will always be accidents! Lol!

Since out of cage play should be closely supervised, lay sheets or blankets over these ares (no plastic they hate the noise and will make them nervous and stressed)
