Hi everyone.

My glider Lilly is a year and a few months old. Last night I noticed that her right eye is very swollen and red. It is so swollen that her eye is even a little shut and watery. I have a vet appointment tomorrow, but from what I can tell it looks like an abscess. I found this site online, and this glider looks almost identical to what Lilly looks like right now. Has anyone else had this happen? Is there anything I can do to make her more comfortable?

That is the link to the site with the glider that looks like Lilly.
Thank you for your help!
Amanda

I would call the vet and tell him/her you suspicions of cherry eye based on your search of information on sugar gliders from a reliable internet site dedicated to glider illnesses. Ask if you can get her in today before she does any damage to her eye that might not be irreversible.

I agree with Karen, eyes are nothing to mess with, get her in ASAP.

Until then you could try warm compresses.

Please keep us posted on your little one.

How's Lilly doing this morning?

You have a vet appointment today.

Please keep us posted on what the vet had to say.

Hi everyone! Thank you so much for all of your responses. Here is an update on the past couple of days. I took Lilly to the vet yesterday and he said that she definitely had an abscess. Wednesday night when she woke up I checked on her right away and saw that her eye was glued shut from crust. (I felt SOOOO bad). I took her into the bathroom and with a cue-tip and warm water I very gently tried to open the eye. After a few minutes and a few cue-tips it finally opened! There was all white pus in her eye, which I managed to carefully get out. I saw her have some instant relief. From there I tried to do everything I could to make her comfortable. I noticed that she wasn't eating any of her food, the only thing she would eat were yogurt drops, which I did not want to give her to many of so I wound up making her a scrambled egg. Finally, she started to eat the egg and then I felt comfortable enough to go to bed. When I woke up the next morning I immediately went to check on her. Her eye looked SOOOO much better. I even had to do a double look to make sure it was really her. The swelling moved down to her cheek and was much much much smaller and her eye was barely even red. I still took her to the vet, and I am happy that I did because he gave her antibiotics (one that is oral and the other are drops for her eye) and he did a complete clean up. When he brought her back to me all of the swelling had completely disappeared and she seemed so much more relaxed.

These have been a crazy couple of days, but I am so happy to say that Lilly is doing so much better! Thank you so much to everyone who replied to my post. Talking to others who understand gliders is so comforting in a situation like this.

Wow. I'm glad she is doing better!!!

I would have never thought to clean her eye. I just would have freaked out and panicked. Good catch!
