Hello,

I am looking into owning two female sugar gliders. I did a lot of research online and read that they can be potty trained. After reading some of the forums It says that they actually can NOT be trained. I watched a video of someone wiping their gliders behind to stimulate them going to the bathroom right as they took them out of their cage. They said that since they go to the bathroom right as they come out, they don't go to the bathroom when there are playing with them. Does anyone have any comments about this, or any suggestions at all? I really want to get them and I don't mind if they have a couple of accidents on me, I just don't want them to pee or poop all over my room, on my bed, carpet, (etc.)

The Good News: The information you read about their not being able to be potty trained was correct. Giving them some time to go when they wake will help for a little while once they are out of the cage.

The Bad News: Gliders simply go when the mood strikes them. Doesn't matter where they are - in their cage, in the wheel, on you, on your bed, on your floor, on your furniture, well you get the idea.

Possibly Good News: Glider poop when they are in good health is like small pellets and very easy to pick up. It also doesn't have a smell. So unless you have a real aversion to picking up poop with a kleenex, this should be a problem as long as you know where they are wink

More Possibly Good News: When you are working to bond with your glider and they make it a point to pee/poop on you, feel honored. They have accepted you agree

It also seems to depend on the glider. My Arthur will do his thing as soon as you pull him out, so I could set him someplace 'safe' & just wait for him to finish. My Gwynevere on the other hand... she'll go when & where she decides, & she'll make sure you understand that.

The epic saga begins here!

My rule is I try and leave them in the cage until they have been bouncing around in there for 30 to 45 min.
This keeps most of the poop in the cage, but...like most small mammals, they poop...anywhere.

I usually wear an old sweater or t-shirt that I don't mind getting soiled.

I just received an email from TPG site, they have instructions on how to potty train your gliders.

I have been doing this since'08.

I don't always get them a treat,
but they do understand why I am having them walking on the palm of my hand over my trash bin, or sink.

I'm glad that someone has taken the time to post it, so more mommies will benefit this.
