Hi there everyone! I am a new member to this forum, but have been poking around for over a year now!
I saw a
Pocket Pets booth in October of 2015 near my hometown in Washington state. I of course fell head over heels in love with these animals, and was convinced that I needed one as a pet. They were giving their spiel, saying how they do not require a
vet, that they can be given a pellet died (sold by them, of course), they can live ALONE and in a SMALL cage, etc. I ended up going home without gliders, but took one of their flyers and started research. I wanted to learn anything and everything about the animal before I considered adopting much, especially because they are such expensive animals. I did a ton of research and finally felt ready to own these animals, but did not see them again at another booth, and could not find any in the area near to me, so I let it go.
In July of 2016, a family member of mine was getting rid of their pair of sugar gliders, which they had received from
Pocket Pets. I adopted the two from her - a male and a female - and named them Buzz and Peaches.
In December of 2016, Buzz got very sick, started seizing, and I ended up having to have him put down. The
vet bill was fairly high (around $250) and I was hoping that
Pocket Pets would at least offer to cover some of this bill. Since then, I have been trying to take advantage of the 12-year warranty that
Pocket Pets offers with all of their animals. Peaches, my surviving glider, began to show signs of anger and depression, which has been stressing me out a lot. I was handed from person to person in the
Pocket Pets company, and FINALLY, after a month, was told to attend a convention near me, and that I would be able to pick up my baby right at the convention. I paid to get into the convention ($12) and for parking ($5) and when I got inside, I found that the
Pocket Pets booth was empty. I called my point of contact and got a text back saying that they had cancelled their appearance. They had failed to tell me this, which I was furious about. They told me that I could just meet them next month at their next appearance. At this point I am nearing $300 in the hole, ON TOP of the cost of the animals' adoption.
I talked to the company today and was not offered any apology. I was told to attend ANOTHER conference, and that I could pick up my baby there. I know that I will have to pay to park and attend this conference, as well as take MORE time off of work. They are still requiring me to pay for my replacement baby. If I do follow through with this, I will be in the hole somewhere in the range of $500. This is ridiculous.
I have sent numerous emails, made numerous phone calls, and have even sent a letter to the company. They have refused to make me a priority, and as a result my baby, Peaches, is sad, lonely, and depressed. I have asked to speak to someone higher up in the company, and have been refused that information.
I asked Ryan, my adoption specialist, where they get their animals, and he refused to say anything more than the animals all come from Florida. I asked if I could find any further information on the internet, and he said that nothing is posted on the internet about their breeding facilities. This seems odd to me.
At this point, I am done dealing directly with it's "customer service reps", and am wanting to bring legal services into the matter. I am looking for people who are willing to give statements on this company, especially those who have had personal experiences with the company. If anyone is willing, please send me an email to the address clkdsugargliders@gmail.com. I am willing to keep all people updated, and willing to protect people's personal information if they do not want their names attached to their stories.
I am a very passionate person, and I think that the animals of this company are not being treated fairly. Beyond that, I do not want any more people to have to go through what I have been put through with this company. I am considering standing outside of conventions they are attending and telling people my story as they enter, just so that they do not purchase their animals from this company. If anyone is willing to help me, in any possible way, please send me an email.
I'm hoping that this will sprout and become something larger, and that something will be done to stop the company. I am reaching out to news stations in the area tomorrow, and eventually hope to start fundraising in order to bring justice. I appreciate any help that people are willing to give me!
Thanks,
Court
