Constipation?

What actually CAUSES constipation? A few weeks ago my year old neutered male glider started making some grunting noises while passing stool. He actually does poop but it seems to take a few minutes. I gave him pumpkin for 4 days and took him to the vet. They found nothing wrong and he wasn't dehydrated. The pumpkin seemed to do the trick. I cut back on treats because the vet wanted him to lose a little weight (he's 121g) and I also thought that could be part of the problem but he seems like he might be having issues again. I feed him TPG. I'm wondering what, if any specific treats/foods could be causing the constipation.

The TPG diet is often blended, making a glider eat the insoluble fibers as well as the soluble fibers. The insoluble fibers can, and often do, lead to constipation in gliders. It binds up and is not digested as it should be. If you were to feed your gliders pieces of vegetables and fruits you would see, they do not eat the outer shell of them, they eat the inside 'meat' of the vegetable and fruit. When a food is blended you are not offering them that choice. I would suggest NOT blending the food and just keeping it all in chunks.

Thanks Peggy I appreciate it! I actually do not blend it tho. I cut everything up into small chunks and then mix it with the rest of the mixture. This way they can pick and choose what they want to eat. Any thoughts as to any treats specifically that could cause constipation? They get a few freeze dried mealworms a few times a week and a few pieces of dried papaya. I also give them Organic Dried Marigold flowers as treats too.

Try cutting back on the old fashion oats called for in the recipe. They can be very constipating especially since they are added to the mixture dry - there may not be enough liquid in the other ingredients to rehydrate them fully so the oats will absorb more water from the gut as they are digested.

I personally do not recommend The Pet Glider diet any longer after what was revealed at the OSGA this year in Elyria, Ohio. Below is a post by the Host of it, Shelly Sterk, and the person in charge of the recent diet study, along with the link where it can be found. As for the Pet Glider diet, you all may want to have Shelly come over here and post about it. At the OSGA, it was stated as a diet that is not recommended due to the vast variations in the diets and how the nutrients cannot be followed/maintained. Not to mention the vitamins are way too much for our sugar gliders. Shelly can explain it much better. This is true. TPG diet was evaluated by Dr. Dierenfeld, PhD (animal nutritionist). The conclusion was that this is not a recommended diet for sugar gliders as it's currently written. Even when following the instructions to the diet, it is completely nutritionally imbalanced. The products that are listed to be substituted with one another are nutritionally different and not in any way equal as a substitute. The variety of vegetables and fruit are the same, very imbalanced. The vitamin/mineral supplement that is required for TPG could not be evaluated because the ingredients are "proprietary". The only information that was provided was: Supplement human grade ingredients - 5:1 Ca:P ratio
- 100% whey protein isolate as carrier (unknown %)
- Additional ingredients:
- Coconut nectar
- Acacia gum
- Ground bee pollen
- Milk thistle (hullless)
- High strength probiotic
- Based on 3X BMR of humans
(Does not gut-load mealworm treats) The fact that the vit/min supplement is 3x the metabolic rate for a human is way off for the needs of a sugar glider. Based on the information we have to date, I could not recommend this diet (TPG) for sugar gliders. I've personally do not like any diet that calls for the "sprinkle method" simply because you cannot control how much the glider is getting; too much or not enough.
