We got 2 rehomed female gliders awhile ago(wife picked them up while is I was at work) , still young, we put them in a cage and let them get comfortable in their new home. After a month or so of ownership we had them in our playroom living with our original four. a nice colony of 6 playing in playroom. I asked the wife if she had ever checked then out. she said no. So I grabbed one and we inspected her tummy, NO POUCH. I grabbed the other girl and after an inspection NO POUCH.
We dont know if the previous owners got their sex wrong or just lied.
I told my wife I think they just went transgender and switched to boys after we bought them.

Could they be males with poms removed?

Or are they young?

The previous owner may not have had much knowledge of sugar gliders or were misinformed on the gender.

It is not physically possible for a glider to "loose a pouch" to become a male glider.

It is most likely that they were neutered young with a Pom Off procedure so they have never developed the male behaviors of mating with a female in heat or the extreme marking of the cage behaviors of most male gliders.

If they were originally purchased from Pocket Pets - they were neutered very young.

They are still your wonderful little furry friends though.

What makes you think that they are transgendered?

Aside from the missing pom and pouch, if you saw them riding each other as if mating, then they are establishing dominance.

Both males and females will exhibit this behavior, it is how they establish the boss in the cage.

sounds to me like you have two boys. dunno As to transgender nothing would surprise me. :willy:

To me it wouldn't be a big deal. I have a male and a female and honestly think my little boy is awesome. But........he's neutered and I know for a fact that there won't be any little gliders in my future. In your case, that's the only thing I would worry about unless you have an entire colony of boys? Also, I would be concerned that they never got to the vet for a wellness visit. An exotic vet familiar with Suggies would have been able to tell.

Don't keep us in suspense. I am so curious of the outcome! You really gave me a good giggle about the transgender thing. :haha:

I'm just happy they appear to be neutered, since we have 2 girls in our colony (vet checked!)
We didn't go to our local vet because last visit we paid $220 for 2 glider exams and didn't get much for it. They weren't even able to cut the gliders nails, the assistant didn't know how to hold them so I basically was the assistant. They didn't do a stool sample check, said it wasn't needed. the doc looked them over, declared them healthy and away we went.
The first 4 have been together 6 or more months, and now the 6 have been together for 3 months and all appear healthy and happy.
It took us about 1 month to finally name them, now we might have to find boy names, that seems to be the worst of all this. The wife wanted girls, I don't care as long as we don't have babies.
