Hi everyone! My name is Valerie and I am a new sugar glider mom. We just got our little girl on Monday, she is 2 months old today. The first night she got out of her cage and was on the curtains when I woke up the next morning. I thought she opened the food door and so I put clips on to keep them shut. Tuesday night she got out again and I couldn't figure out how. My husband noticed that the bars on the top of the cage were a little wider and so we weaved some craft foam in and out of the bars to see if that was the problem. Well, last night she still escaped! We closed off any area that the bars seemed to be wider and I stayed up and watched her. She is pushing herself through the 1/2" space in the bars. The lady I got her from said she has never had any of her gliders escape, they don't even clip the food doors b/c hers don't try to get out. She told me that this little one must just be a smarty pants, lol. Makes sense b/c my children are the same way! Anyhow, I need to get her a larger cage, but wanted some advice on which one might have smaller openings, so that my little Houdini doesn't keep escaping. Thanks!!

What kind of cage do you have her in now? Do the bars bend easily?
I use HQ flight cages and they are easy to find on Amazon. They have thicker bars that don't give, she may have a harder time escaping something like that.

Thanks for the advice! The cage is just a large bird cage that the lady gave me with her. There were some bars that were bigger than 1/2" but we covered those. The spot I watched her squeeze through was 1/2", but the bars are easy to spread. That's why I was wondering what cages everyone else recommends. I was going to order one online, but didn't want to end up with one with flimsy bars again and have the same problem. She has a hanging pouch, fleece rope, ball pit, hanging basket for treats, and one of my shirts and a small fleece blanket in there. We weren't expecting to get her right away, thought she was still weaning, so we are trying to get all the right things for her now. I am ordering a wheel today, just trying to decide on the best one. This is Sweetpea, our sweet little escapee!

I had a similar problem with my first cage. Arthur kept escaping & best that I ever figured was he could bend the thin bars near the door enough to let himself out.
If you checkout some of the other posts, you'll see a lot of talk about cages. Critter Nation seems popular as well as the cages sold by Lisa at Sun Coast Sugar Gliders.
When in doubt, go see what the pet stores around you have displayed. It may help. Good luck!

Thanks for all the responses and help! We ordered her a flight cage that was recommended by several others on another thread and a wheel. Both should be here Monday, I can't wait! In the mean time we got the plastic hardware cloth and used zip ties to attach it to the inside of her cage to keep her from squeezing through the bars. I am excited to get continue to read more on here and learn from you all how to be a great suggie mommy.
