Poor Tid Bit ..this is a long story - 09/18/03 10:02 PM

A while ago me and a friend saw an Ad in the paper about sugar gliders...she really wanted one and did a lot of research about them before finding the ad..I had already had one and wanted her to have a friend...but I wanted a girl. The had said twin boys...so I didnt think I would be getting one. We got there and the lady went into the gliders room (aka her kids' room a boy and a girl)....they turned out to be her daughters babys...they had a VERY dirty cage and they were I guess running loose in the very messy room. Well at first she couldnt find them!! We looked for like an hour..finally we found them in a pair of dirty jeans in a hamper!! Anyway after I saw their little faces I couldnt just let his brother stay there!!! We got them both and left. I never thought to ask the age of them..so I called and she said 4 weeks oop!! They still needed their mom for another 4 weeks!! She wouldnt let them come back so they could do that...so we had to hand feed them milk that an exotic pet vet said to get. They seemed to be doing great...hers became very bonded to her:) Then disaster stuck..about a month ago (Labor day) I got a call at 7am..my friend was crying..TidBit was barely moving or breathing. Just laying there...She had to go to work and couldnt get take him to the emergency vet..I rushed over there...by the time I got there he had died. We have no idea why this happened. She said he would shake (convolse) in her hands..and before he stopped breathing he shook really badly and then died. She thinks he ate some of the cage? I read on some other post here that he might have been low sugar??? Could someone help us out here.. I dont want this to happen to his brother

I wasnt going to post this but it might help someone else if it happens to their glider.

This is posted in loving memory of Tidbit who had crossed over the Rainbow Bridge

[:"blue"] I am so sorry that both of you had to go through this horrible experience. There are really no words to help with your pain. Just know that we are all thinking about you.

What you need to understand is that there is probably nothing you could have done. It is so unfortunate that the lady was too unfeeling to let them have the added time they needed with their mom, but both of you, I'm sure, did the best you could. [/]

You tried your best. At least Tidbit knew love and affection before passing on to the Rainbow Bridge. I hope your friend is coping all right. Maybe you would like to direct her here.

It is horrible that the woman didn't care about the health of those babies.

My heart goes out to both of you.
Take care,
Lisa

Ok, the thing that jumps at me is the "milk an exotic vet said to get". My last vet, who was very knowledgable, had NO idea what type of milk a joey needed at that age. She suggested a puppy replacer, thank goodness I had GC and Sheila to help. You need to check into the type of milk your using. If you feel milk replacer is needed, you need to look into getting Wombaroo milk/mix. I used the baby bml mix with great success raising joeys from 2 wks oop, on. The way this baby died suggests to me, (and I am NOT an expert) that he wasn't getting what he needed and shut down. Get this other baby checked out. Good luck with him, I am so sorry the other one was lost. Your friend is in my prayers.

Oh the exotic vet had gliders and had to bring up a rejected joey. And had used that milk..I couldnt remember the name of it. OPPS.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear about little Tidbit. You asked about the cage--what type did your friend have? What type do you have? Hopefully not galvenized wire, or wood. Did your friend do a necropsy? Was your friend feeding the same diet as you? You're asking about low sugar, but it seems the best way to tell is to let a vet determine what might've been the cause. It would probably be good to take your wee one to the vet as well. So many questions! Sorry I can't help; I'm no expert, but I'm sure someone else will come along with some suggestions. Again, my condolences.
