cry Cora, my heart is sinking to read this...I was SO SINCERELY HOPING that things would improve. But it doesn't sound like this happening at all.

I ache to read that a crossroads is quickly coming...and I know that your heart will be the best guide that anyone could have.

I'm with you in spirit.... hug2

I'm so sorry Cora that things aren't better. I hope things improve because I don't want you to have to make that extremely hard decision.
I have just started reading Spencer's story a few weeks ago when I saw ur video and I was hoping things were improving for this little guy.

I will keep him in my thoughts and prayers.

I'm so sorry to hear about your little guy, Cora. You're awesome for taking such good care of him - that sounds like so much work and heart ache. I don't know his full medical story, so I'm sorry I can't offer any ideas. It sounds like you have a great team of vets looking after him and you're doing all you can to make him comfortable and happy. I'll be praying for Spencer and your family - I hope he makes a turn around. I hope he pulls through!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/01/10 02:11 AM

i dont know if you thought of this but if all the meds
spencer has been on is not helping him, maybe you could
try a natural animal doctor and try natural remedies. i know they work for people and dogs, hopefully our gliders.
just a thought for the pain you and spencer are going
thru.
my prayers go out to spencer and you.

take care,

Saying a extra special prayer for you both..!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/01/10 02:20 PM

last night he did pretty good til bout 630 then he started fussing. Even with the antibiotic plus pain and oragel max strength it did not stop, just more intense fussing. Still trying to get him comfy. He weighs 121 grams, 5 down from last week. He eats mealies and waxies and picks at his food. He does still eat the grape we share at lunch everyday. A wise woman called me yesterday and told me that I will know when its time by looking in his eyes, he will tell me...................................I just hope I am listening....................................So Spenny and I are going to have fun, I will not forcefeed him and when he tells me its time, I hope you all will understand. Keeping the magnets in bonding and sleeping pouch for now....it cant hurt right?

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/01/10 02:29 PM

Cora and Spencer, I know that you both are having a really bad time and my prayers are with you both.
We know that saying special prayers are heard at times and I believe that sometimes we don't think so and my belief is that God is a really busy person with all of the mayhem going on the his world.
But if we all send lots of prayers with Spencer and Cora in them then maybe they will get through and God will have a moment to take care of little Spencer and make him well and give him many happy years with Cora.
So here is my prayer for you both.

Our Savior, we ask that you find the time and love to help Cora and Spencer through this hard time. We know that they are both wonderful beings and are only waiting for your love and compassion to help them through this hard time with the sickness of Spencer.
Give Cora the answers that she needs to help Spencer through this and point her in the right direction to make this happen.
And please Lord. Fill Spencer's heart with the calmness and serenity that you have the power to give, so that he will awake tonight and be still and calm and to not hurt himself any longer. He is a cherished soul and Cora needs her little man to be healthy and happy and a carefree little Glider like you made him the day he was born.
Watch over them and keep them both calm in spirit and let them know in your way that if there is a decision to make as to sending little Spencer on to you that it will be because you need to add one more Glider to your glider part of heaven.
Thank you God and I pray that their heart is not heavy any longer.
Amen

Ooooh - it breaks my heart just reading this. I'll keep praying for you both.

Can you get the little guy to eat mushy, snacky foods just to get his appetite up at all? I'm sure you've probably done this already, but baby food, yogurt, honey type of mixes might be good. Berries and raw juice might help too. :< Maybe sprinkle some extra bee's pollen on his wormies so he gets the vitamins.

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/04/10 01:18 AM

Thank Goodness I am not alone, I know I have an entire glider community to lean on.................that is awesome!! And I love each and every one of you! I picked up some sm tz antibiotics today from the vet........suggested by another vet to my vet................it cant hurt, he very well may have an infection up in there ...........could be caused from mouth bacteria or Lord only knows. Dr. Reese Is consulting with other vets and Dr. Antinoff told him of the vet website, he has to wait a few days for the criminal history and license check but when he can get in there she gave him the names of some cloaca info to read. I have backed off of Spencers meds a little and concentrating more on numbing agents for his tush!!! He did pretty good til bout 4 30 to 630 this morning, I just applied different numbing agents with q-tips he finally got comfortable and ate a little. I will hopefully get some pics soon, been very busy, I like to play too and have lots of gliders to play/care for (not complaining)!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/04/10 01:33 AM

Glad to hear that you may have some answers in the works. Could they swab and culture his cloaca? Just a thought.

Prayers and good thoughts to you and Spencer.

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/14/10 06:25 PM

My apologies for not updating before now. The antibiotics are either helping or his new collar....LOL. Prob the antibiotics! He has had 4 good nights in a row. He is still a little swollen (cloaca) and he dribbles on himself, I think thats to ward off predators(like there are any). otherwise he voids and defecates fine. He will however still get a little overzealous and mutilate when collar off which could be 5 min or 12 hours. Last night he barked for about 30 minutes!! I dont know know what that was about. He rarely barks!! Actually quite a few of my gliders barked last night! His appetite is not much better, he weighs 121 grams though! He wanted to show off his new collar that his other mother mary h bought him from sugeebaby. This is his 5th day of wearing it. The plastic is softer but thick enough. sugeebaby modifies it with moleskin around the neck. Knowing Spencer I modified it by putting moleskin around the outside of it. If I see that it is rubbing his neck I will be put another layer of moleskin around the neck. It is actually a rat ecollar. It weighs nine grams.....................check it out:

fastened with velcro:

Thank You mary h and sugeebaby for making life more comfortable for Spencer. He has not had a bad night since He got it! Also wanted to add The magnets are still in his pouch as well!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/14/10 09:20 PM

Hi Cora (and Spencer :O)
I was just thinking about the both of you last night so I was glad to see this update. I am glad Spencer is doing better in the new collar. He looks good Cora.
Give that little man a bunch of lovin' from me please angel
Posted By: Feather

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/15/10 01:13 AM

He looks good Cora. I hope the antibiotics do the trick.

I have one or two ecollars like that. They gave them to me at the vet college. The velcro can be moved to tighten the collar or to loosen it.

I hope Spencer finally gets to live without an ecollar.
Posted By: Cora

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/15/10 05:20 AM

I had hoped so too Feather, unfortunately with the type of mutilator Spencer is I could never trust him alone without the ecollar. Its just not worth the risk. He is such a sweet boy!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 03/20/10 01:53 AM

Spencer doing some better on the Antibiotics, meaning he is not having "night terrors"......................trying to get to himself at night in the past week and a half. However when I take the collar off he might be ok for any where from 5 min to several hours but will eventually try to get his cloaca. The bedroom hubby and I share is just not consistently warm enough so since he has been doing better I moved him to the living room last night and he ate every drop on his plate! I think he enjoys being around other gliders. I just cant let him go back in the glider room where my breeding pairs are in case he starts the night thing again. I am looking for a baby monitor at garage sales and online so I can hear him if he starts again after the antibiotics are finished.

So I weighed Spencer tonight..............140 grams...........YAY, knew he was getting fluffy again!!! He is on the SMZ TMP again, but it helps a lot. I have been able to leave the collar off much of the time except when I sleep or he is not on me. So we are doing better right now. Thank you to all who still pray and or follow Spencers journey.

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 05/07/10 05:59 AM

A member on another board asked for some pics ...............

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hope this is not pic overload.....LOL Spencer is a white faced cinnamon so its hard to get good pics of his cloacal problem but I got one or 2. He does wet himself but I think that is more of marking rather than another symptom so thats why he is wet on his bottom, he does it when he wakes up, course he drenches me too smile

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 07/03/10 08:47 PM

Spencer is still having issues with wanting to tear up the inside (not outside) of his cloaca. He is very talented to be able to do that and has it bleeding in seconds. So collar off time is only a little while with me eyes on him constantly, cause he will sneak a little nip here and there. Could this be some sort of itch rather than pain???? If so how do we fix it? The following pics were taken last night.
Spencer turns his collar this way when he wants it off
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/angelfish_37/IMG_5296.jpg
http://i5.photobucket.com/albums/y164/angelfish_37/IMG_5297.jpg

Spencers Cloaca, please note the dark colored are is scare tissue, his skin tone is pink and thin in appearance because he is WFC so scars look like that on him, even his neuter scar (pom off). The slit is what he urinates and defecates from. Course I think that is different than all other gliders because of the surgeries and mutilations.

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 07/03/10 10:40 PM

hug2 Have you tried Cortizone 10? Mary had me use it on Ace when he was itching. It really helped but it's only a temp fix. If it is an itch the question is what's causing it? Have you tossed the itching thought at your vet? Might lead them to think outside of the box dunno

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 07/06/10 01:12 PM

Just a thought but have you tried Vit E and/or Emu oil, inside and out? When my little ones are healing from surgery, I rub a bit of both oils on the affected part, then put a drop of both oils on my finger and let them lick it off. For Spenny's inside itch or pain, maybe these could reach it and help.

What about asking zoo vets if they've had this problem with any animals? Or asking any and every type of vet, for their opinions/suggestions. There have to be specialists out there somewhere, be it at a teaching hospital or some big zoo, who have some ideas of how to treat this.

Still sending tons of prayers for both of you!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 08/09/10 01:41 AM

Spencer is doing quite well right now. Aunt Denise made him an e-jacket that fits him perfectly, allowing him to eat with his hands, Run in his therapeutic wheel (thanks to the kindness of Aunt Lori and whatever little elves helped), Living in an extra large pop up kennel (standing upright, not on its side ) full of toys and a light blue and purple butterfly cage set! He can also sleep comfortably in my bra. Are you understanding what i am saying??? He is living like a normal glider I am sorry Denise and Bourbon(Lori) I tear up every time i think of the kindness shown towards him. You see Denise (minkasmom) made him an e-jacket that he cannot get out of that made his quality of life 100 percent better!!! He is happy, he was even sleeping with 3 bracelets around his midsection this morning!!!! OMGoodness he was able to carry them to his regular pouch and fit through them!! he licks me and is so happy now. He cannot glide but he can jump pretty far from one person to another! Will he still mutilate if given the chance? you bet. Now I am praying for a medical miracle. Maybe x-laser is the answer. Bourbon has a pamphlet on it, I should have scanned it. There is a vet in Houston having great success with hip displasia in dogs and several other ailments in other animals and is excited at the possibility of helping the chronic mutilators with this new laser therapy.
We love you all!!!!

I'm tearing up with joy to hear that the Spencer-man is STILL doing as well now as he did a week ago in his new jacket! dance dance It HAS to be more comfortable for him to wear, and for you to have him tucked down in your bra! mlove

Aunt Denise is sending some envelopes to Texas this morning...one is heading to you, so Spenny can have a couple "clean" vests to change into (and I made the minor changes to these that we discussed earlier); one is heading to MaryH, and the third one is going to Val (I understand she has a young man heading HER way that could really benefit from this e-jacket as well).

Give Spencer a handful of hugs and THANK YOU's from me...it's because of him and other gliders like him that sent me on this new mission. If we can't find out what's causing the SMing trouble, at least we can improve the quality of his life in other ways! hug2 hug2

I miss you both & love you to PIECES!!!!!

Wow! What GREAT news! Cora I'm so thrilled for little Spencer. I think I would have cried when I found him sleeping in his bracelets.

Denise ~ what a wonderful friend to these gliders in need mlove

I do have some questions..

Is the key to this jacket working, the length of it keeping them from being able to bend all the way down to their bottom?

Oh, and are those new and improved SLIMMER cruisers? Love it! None of mine run at the same time anyway shakehead

...Thank you so much Denise...you've always been an angel in my books.
It's been 14 days since Travis had any lactulose...he still has the ecollar on till we get rid on one more place. His personality has totaly changed...he gives me lots of nosies and is just a much sweeter glider. The K-laser has done something for him...he is pooping without any discomfort.
But I want your jacket Denise just in case...his sm'ing might not have anything to do with the colon

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 08/09/10 11:27 PM

If the day got any more WONKY than what I'd planned it to be after I hit the "submit" button at 7:30 this morning, I'd have to find a Greyhound bus going 70mph to throw myself in front of! tant

Everything I had so strategically planned to be accomplished by a certain time got set back at least 2 hours, but what counts on the bottom line is that 3 envelopes are speeding their way to Texas as we speak! dance dance I caught the last pick-up time at the main post office, so I'm hopeful that each of you will have your envelopes by Wednesday or Thursday at the absolute latest! (Mary, you're gonna just LOVE yours...I made the 2 jackets for your babies BIG so there won't be ANY issues about it being "too small" hug2 We encountered this on Saturday with Milky Way & it was HILARIOUS how we worked around it! I've kinda figured out a sizing system based on how many fingers you can put between their shoulder blades....Spencer is 2 fingers, and I made the ones for your fuzzy children at least 3! "more of them to love" is the buzzword du jour! roflmao )

And to answer your question, Dirty Paws: It's a combination of 2 things that don't let them bend and reach their bottom half---#1 the velcro "tabs" that I have on the back of the jacket and #2 the little piece of index tab that seats between the 2 layers of material on their chest in front. I hand-test each jacket on my index & middle fingers: slipped between the 1st and 2nd joints, I cannot bend either finger forward! That tells me that a glider can't bend forward either when the jacket is on! That's the goal! thumb

The next challenge is going to be to adjust this set-up for post-neutering...I have an idea brewing in my head, but we'll see how close to the mark I am. Guerita starts getting her boys neutered next month, and I want to observe first-hand and make notes of adjustments that might be required.

Now Mary...you know stealing gliders is NOT nice right? I know it is a BAD BAD habit of your's and many of us can overlook it but I really think Cora would have an issue if you ran off with Spencer.

I truly hate to say it, Mary, but I kinda have a vested interest in the SpenMan too.....so I'd be pickin' Cora up and chasing after your little ol' self if you decided to go south of the border with him! roflmao roflmao You may be able to run faster'n Cora, but DON'T make me dig out my runnin' shoes!!! hug2

I have not updated as Spencer continues to remain in marys care. Un fortunately the laser therapy does not appear to be helping him. He still gets 2 more treatments, 1 tomorrow and the last on Monday. Mary and I have emailed Spens health story to some folks trying to get any ideas of anything we can try. So I would like to Thank any of you or your vets that have responded or just gave us an idea. I pick him up next Thursday!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 09/04/10 12:14 AM

LOL Thank You!!! At this time Mary and Dr Antinoff are talking about some possible ideas if it is a nerve problem, Dr Antinoff is consulting with a neurologist. A member of this forum has experience with this nerve thing and I appreciate the input!!! Although it scares me to death to remove it. Mary is doing great and Spencer has been a good boy the past few days when his e jacket is off! She gives him kisses on his little head for me and gives him a peice of fleece I sent with him with my scent on it! Love You Mary! Thank You so much for consulting with everyone you can think of and not "letting it go" ((((HUGS))))

Thank you each and every one of you who are praying for him or thinking positive thoughts/energy towards him! I miss him very much but I know he his fine and in good hands!

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 09/04/10 01:30 AM

Cora, it just never fails to amaze me how dedicated you and Mary both are to Spencer. I so hope they can get it all figured out and he can live without his jacket or a collar. Denise, thank you so much for the jacket. I can only imagine how much better his life is with it compared to the collar.

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 09/06/10 03:36 PM

Well Spencer will get his last treatment tomorrow! Dont know that anythging else will be done to him at this time. I worry about what else can go wrong if they try to go up there and cut out that nerve so to speak? What if it is not the nerve that is the problem??? Until I KNOW what the problem is I dont think I should be letting vets who have a hunch as to what is wrong cutting on my baby. Any thoughts about this??? Dont get me wrong These are competent vets, its just a gut feeling. Dr. Antinoffs neurologist has yet to get back with Mary on what he thinks!
Posted By: Dancing

Re: Prayer for Coras Spencer - Part 2 - 09/06/10 03:40 PM

Cora, I don't think I would be letting them cut on him either without more information. Hearing from the neurologist is a definate need to me. I would be worried about what else "might" go wrong if that nerve is cut. Especially if that nerve isn't the issue at all.

I agree Cora, and I feel that if you have a gut feeling, you should trust it and wait.

I suspect that one person who I know and love that lives in that area probably hasn't seen your "mayday" call...haven't seen her on the board here much lately...I have her number & could always ask on your behalf.

I'm anxious to hear Spencer's critique on the modification I made to the jacket straps (I can just imagine what it's going to be: something like this ---> tant tant ) The next step beyond this is gonna be LEATHER!!! roflmao Let him try to chew through that!
